Ronald McDonald House Fundraiser Beats Target

A fundraiser in Dauphin last week raised 166 per cent of its initial goal.

In memory of Dane Kaleta, the third annual Ronald McDonald House fundraiser ran outside the Dauphin Clinic Pharmacy on Friday.

One-thousand hot dogs were handed out and more than $20,000 was raised. Curtis Kaleta says the amount of community support they had was phenomenal...

"It was way more than we ever expected, that's for sure. All I can say is thanks to the whole community of Dauphin for coming out and supporting this great cause (and) keeping the legacy of Dane going strong."

$10,000 will go to Ronald McDonald House. The other half will be split between the Parkland Crossing Playroom, the Barker School Playground FUNdraiser, and the Kinsmen Aquatic Center Waterslide Fund.

Refugees and Displaced Peoples Higher Than Ever, According to UN Report

The United Nations' refugee agency says that by the end of last year, 65.3-million people had been forcibly displaced from their homes.

Of that, about 12.4-million were newly displaced, due to persecution, conflict, generalized violence, or human rights violations.

The sobering statistics were contained in the agency's annual global trends report, released today to mark World Refugee Day.

Only a fraction of those displaced find new permanent homes around the world.

Canada, however, has consistently been among the lead nations in resettling refugees.

Saskatchewan RCMP Watching for Drivers Passing Emergency Vehicles Too Fast

Mounties will be out across Saskatchewan this week cracking down on drivers who don't slow down when passing emergency vehicles.

RCMP Staff Sergeant Pete Garvey says the law requires drivers to reduce their speed to 60 kilometres per hour because it is dangerous for police or EMS or tow truck drivers trying to deal with an emergency scene.

Garvey says the biggest issue is often awareness, because drivers forget they must slow to 60 kilometres per hour when the lights are flashing on any emergency vehicle, including tow trucks.

Fines start at $210.
