The Dauphin Kings are preparing for somewhat of a light next week that will see the team play just two games over the next nine days.

They welcome the Neepawa Titans on Friday and they don't play again after that until next Saturday when Neepawa is once again in town. For the Kings, it's been a solid start to the season as they have won four of their five games.

Starting last week in Portage, Dauphin found themselves down 3-2 late in the game before a one-timer on the power play from Nolan Wickham beat Gavin Renwick as Dauphin tied it late and Naaman Hofer scored in overtime to give Dauphin the extra point. Hofer has been a definite spark for Dauphin this year as the 19-year-old defenseman has two goals and two assists in five games. Hofer is an extremely smooth skater and he sees the ice very well which complements an already extremely strong back end for the Kings.

Hofer was acquired in a trade from the Winnipeg Freeze in the offseason.

"He moves the puck very well and he has a great first pass," said Hedley on the play of Hofer. "We knew he was a good defenseman, but he has been a pleasant surprise. The patience and confidence he plays with, it's been fun to watch."

Dauphin's first loss of the campaign came 48 hours after a 4-3 overtime win against Portage as Dauphin dropped a tight 2-1 affair against the Selkirk Steelers. Both of Selkirk's goals came while on the man advantage as the Kings penalty kill slipped a little bit after a hot start. 

Hedley notes how important it is to stay out of the box.

"You have to check with your feet and guys have to make sure they're moving at all times," offered Hedley. "The disappointing part is the penalties weren't really good penalties, they were in the offensive zone and neutral zone. We have to be discipline, it's as simple as that."

Then in a marquee matchup to begin the week, Dauphin welcomed the Virden Oil Capitals to town. Dauphin and Virden are expected to be among the top teams in the West Division and league, respectively. Virden advanced to the league final last year and they have 15 players back from that team, including Nolan Chastko. Bryce Bryant, who had 67 points last year with Yellowhead, has been solid with five points in six games. Virden also has Josh Lehto on their roster and he leads the league with 13 points across six games. Lehto scored on Tuesday; however, that was it for the Oil Capitals.

Cole Sheffield made 27 saves, Logan Walker, Gabriel Bugeau, Jordan Bax scored, and the Kings skated off with a solid 3-1 win against their division rivals. It was the first of six games between Dauphin and Virden.

"I thought our game was pretty complete, we did some pretty smart things," offered Doug. "We certainly tightened up in the second and third. They had a push and we knew they would, they're very well coached and they're a very good team. It was a great win for us."

'The Glover Effect':

Cayden Glover becomes the most recent Western Hockey Leaguer to come back to Dauphin. Last year, Jakob Brook was reassigned by the Regina Pats. On Thursday, Glover was reassigned by the Prince George Cougars. To note, Prince George is atop the Western Conference and they have the top five leading scorers in the league. 

Glover is a 19-year-old from Brandon with 116 games of regular season WHL action under his belt and he has also played in seven playoff games. In four games with Prince George this year, he was held off the scoresheet. He did have seven goals and five assists in 51 regular season games last year.

In his final year of AAA hockey with the Wheat Kings back in the 2019-20 season, Glover had 16 goals and 24 assists.

"We want to get him a lot of go to moments and puck touches," offered Hedley. "He's a big guy that can skate and he has some skill. We want to get him back to being one of our go to guys and we want him to get back to having fun. We're expecting him to add some offence and he brings a great physical presence."

  • Dauphin is set for their third game of a four-game homestand that began with a 2-1 loss before they won their last game;
  • Friday's game is the first of six between Dauphin and Neepawa this season;
  • Friday's game is the second of four straight against West Division opponents;
  • Dauphin's next game against an East Division team is October 23 at the MJHL Showcase against Niverville and then Winkler on October 24;
  • Gabriel Bugeaud leads Dauphin with three goals and two assists which are paired with 12 penalty minutes; and 
  • Cole Sheffield was named the goaltender of the month for September while Naaman Hofer was named defenseman of the month.

Following a tenure with the Parkland U18 Rangers program, Riley Zdan of Alonsa started his junior career off with a bang.

Heading out west to start things off in the 2021-22 season, Zdan scored three times and added seven assists in 34 games with the North Okanagan Knights. Zdan returned to the Knights the following season and played just three games before he was dealt to the Chase Heat, of the same Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. In two games with the Heat, Zdan notched one assist. With the feeling that the west coast lifestyle wasn't the perfect fit for him, Riley moved back home and joined the Lundar Falcons of the Capital Region Junior Hockey League. 

Zdan was highly effective in his 13 regular season games with the Falcons last year, scoring three times while adding three assists. As the Falcons made the second round of the playoffs, Riley posted another two goals and one assist in seven games, but the team's season came to an end at the hands of the Selkirk Fishermen, who went on to beat St. Malo in five games in the league final.

Riley is now back with Lundar this year and the team opened their season last weekend and it resulted in a convincing 7-1 win against Arborg. 

"It feels great to be back with Lundar, we picked up some new guys this year," said Zdan. "We have a lot of skill and things are looking very good after our first game."

Just as he started off his time with North Okanagan a few years prior, it could not have been much of a better start for Riley in his second year with the Falcons. In the team's 7-1 win, Zdan scored a pair of goals and had two assists as he leads the league with four points heading into the second week of the regular season.

"I had a lot of help from my teammates, I couldn't have done it without them," offered Zdan. "I feel really good about my game right now and I'm thrilled that I was able to help out the team."

This year's team also includes Ryan Benson of McCreary and he got off to a solid start as well, with one goal and two assists in the 7-1 win. With a population of just more than 1000, Zdan is also very thankful that he gets an opportunity to represent his hometown of Alonsa.

"There's very few people here in Alonsa so it means a lot that I have this opportunity to play with Lundar," ended Zdan. "I work as hard as I can everyday to set a good example for the young kids in the town. Just because you live in a small place, doesn't mean you can't make it to high levels if you push youself and I like to think that I do."

Riley and the rest of the Falcons will look to open their season with two straight wins when they head to Beasujour on Sunday to play the Comets. As of posting, Beasujour has yet to play a game this season with their first coming on Saturday in St. Malo.

The Dauphin Clippers varsity girls 7's team has another banner to hang up at the DRCSS.

For the second straight year, they won the Westman High School Rugby League after winning 10 of their 12 games throughout the campaign with one of the games ending in a draw.

In their final jamboree, Dauphin hammered Swan Valley 44-0, before downing Crocus Plains, 22-0. Dauphin then beat Souris, 28-7.

Next up is the provincial championships this weekend as Dauphin will play Steinbach and Crocus Plains in back to back games. The top two teams after a two-game round robin will play for a gold medal.

Trayden Guiboche spent two years of his high school days playing with the Dauphin Clippers hockey team.

On the team in grade 11, Trayden helped the team advance to the league semi-finals last year where they came up short against the Swan Valley Tigers. Guiboche was also a member of the team in the previous year when they lost to Major Pratt in the first round.

While his days as a Clipper have now been numbered, Guiboche still cherishes the moments he had as a team member.

"It was great, I became really close friends with guys I wasn't before," said Guiboche. "The bond in the dressing room and outside was unbreakable for everyone on the team. I had two great years with the team."

Back in May, Guiboche was given the chance to play on the national stage at Seven Oaks Arena in Winnipeg as a member of Team Nunavut for the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships. It was an event that didn't go as planned for the team, but it was still a week to remember for Guiboche, who is now set to play at the next level.

"It was an unbelievable opportunity that not many get," offered Guiboche. "I had the chance to meet some great guys and stay in contact with them. I had a great time and I am very grateful that I had the chance."

Back in the Parkland now and with the hockey season underway at many levels, Guiboche is playing with a team that has hit the ice in game action. Already home to the Waywayseecappo Wolverines of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, there is now a new junior team playing at the Arena Complex which is 1 hour and 49 minutes away from Dauphin.

The Waywayseecappo Wild is the newest member of the Keystone Junior Hockey League which now features seven teams from First Nation communities across the province. They opened their inaugural regular season over the weekend and it was a tough one as they gave up 17 goals in two defeats against the OCN Storm, a team that has become a perennial powerhouse over the years.

Guiboche had one goal as the team now prepares to play a pair of home games this weekend against the NCN Flames. For quite some time, Trayden was unsure where he would play after his time with the Clippers but now, he's on a team that is looking for their first win in franchise history.

NCN opened their season with a 1-0 shutout win against the PBCN Selects before giving up nine goals in a two-goal defeat the next night.

"There's a lot of new faces on this team and I'm also familiar with some," said Guiboche. "It's been a solid experience so far and we will continue to get better as the season rolls on. I plan to push myself even more this year to give myself a chance to succeed."

Guiboche also recently had the opportunity to play with the U18 Manitoba men's softball team at the Canada Summer Games which took place earlier this year. Guiboche said that was another dream come true and despite not winning gold, he loved every minute of his time in Prince Edward Island.

Cole Sheffield made 27 saves as the Dauphin Kings are right back in the win column. 

Three different Kings scored as they outshot and outscored the Virden Oil Capitals. 38 shots led to three goals for Dauphin in a 3-1 victory in a highly anticipated matchup between two teams that are expected to be among the best in the West.

Josh Lehto opened up the scoring in the game for Virden but that was it. Following Lehto's goal, Logan Walker scored just 51 seconds later to tie the game. 

Gabriel Bugeaud continued with his stellar play later in the period as he scored his third of the season with just less than four minutes left in the first to give Dauphin a 2-1 lead and they never looked back.

Jordan Bax scored on a beautiful play with just more than three minutes left as Dauphin skated off with a solid 3-1 win.

Dauphin is now 4-1 on the season as they remain atop the MGEU West Division. Next up for the team is a battle against Neepawa on home ice.

The Major Pratt Trojans are once again champions in the Jewel of the Parkland.

Playing in a tournament at Goose Lake High over the weekend, the Trojans completed a great weekend as they beat Gilbert Plains in the final, 16-25, 25-21 and 15-11. Major Pratt put together a great round-robin as they won 10 of their 12 sets played, which were only fewer than Gilbert Plains who won 11 of their 12.

In a round-robin all Parkland matchup, it was all Gibert plains, but Major Pratt responded in a big way by winning the championship in a rematch. Major Pratt has now won this tournament in back to back years.

The Parkland U15 Rangers have their first win of the season.

After opening the campaign with a loss against Brandon, the Rangers battled hard and locked up a 6-5 win against the Southwest Cougars. Xander Perih was outstanding in net as he finished with 39 saves, several of which came in crunch time near the end of the game.

Dayson Martin had the hot stick as he scored three times.

The Dauphin Kings dropped their first regular season game of the season on Sunday afternoon.

Following three straight wins to open the season, the Kings dropped a tight 2-1 affair against the Selkirk Steelers. Special teams were the difference in the game as the Steelers scored twice while a man up. Dauphin also struggled heavily on the penalty kill as they failed to score across four attempts.

Deshon Friesen opened up the scoring for the Steelers just 6:51 into the game and Selkirk went on to lead for the next 12 minutes of gametime. Working hard to earn his first goal of the season was Ethan Williment nearly midway into the second.

Ultimately, Owen Weihs would score on the power play for Selkirk at the 11:43 mark of the third and that goal proved to be the winner. Dauphin dominated Selkirk on the shot clock, 38-21. They allowed just 11 shots over the final two periods. 

In four games this year, Dauphin is just 2-for-14 on the power play while their penalty kill has gone 17-for-20. Despite the loss, Dauphin remains in a tie for first in the West Division with Waywayseecappo and Neepawa. Dauphin and the Wolverines have won three of their fourg ames while the Titans have won three of five. 

The Kings will now welcome the Virden Oil Capitals to Credit Union Place on  Tuesday evening.

The Parkland U18 Rangers gave the Yellowhead Chiefs all they could handle on Friday night.

Opening the Manitoba AAA U18 Hockey League season in front of a great crowd at Credit Union Place, the Rangers battled hard but ultimately came up short in a 3-2 loss against Yellowhead.

Chase Glover of McCreary was very solid in net for Parkland as he turned away 29 shots in the narrow defeat. Ethan Carnegie and Andrew Pidskalny scored for Parkland in the loss.

The Rangers welcome Eastman for a pair of games next Saturday and Sunday. Darnell Duff will broadcast Sunday’s game as a part of a six-game Rangers broadcast schedule.

The Dauphin Kings put together a big comeback effort on Friday to remain perfect.

Trailing 3-2 late, Nolan Wickham scored on the power play to tie it and Naaman Hofer scored the winner on an overtime breakaway in a 4-3 win against the Portage Terriers.

Myles Yearwood scored the games opening goal with a gorgeous shot just 1:26 in as Dauphin took a 1-0 lead but it didn't last as Nolan Nenow tied the game a short time later for Portage. 

Dauphin would regain their lead before the first period ended as Gabriel Bugeaud scored his second as a King as Dauphin scored their first power play goal of the season and they took a 2-1 lead into the dressing room. 

Grant Dardis tied the game for Portage in the second before former King Slade Stanick their first lead of the game as the Terriers led 3-2 late.

Wickham tied it late and then Hofer finished it. Dauphin ended 2-for-4 on the power play and they were 6-for-7 on the penalty kill. 

Dauphin welcomes Selkirk to town on Sunday.

The Dauphin Clippers football team were looking for their first win of the season on Friday and they are officially on the board.

The Clippers came out with a great game plan as they led from start to finish and ended up hammering Parkwest, 40-6.

On the offensive side of the ball, Cody Zurba completed seven of his 14 passes for 60 yards with Will Miner racking up 109 yards on 11 rushes. Sully Fox had 60 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.

Lars Gudbjartson had six tackles along with one assist and one interception while Jackson Cheater racked up five tackles, one assist, and one knockdown.

The Clippers have been knocking on the door all season long and on Friday, they busted thru it to win their first game.
