It was Parkland strong in Winnipeg for the 2023 Seagram's Whisky Curling Club Provincial Championships over the weekend.

On the men's side, Kyle Forsyth and his rink made the final four. Skipping the foursome that included Trent Hill, Cody Hill, and Jarvis Whyte, the team won three of their five round-robin games. They would then steal a point each in the seventh and eighth end in their tiebreaker game to steal a 5-4 victory. The Parkland foursome would give up three in the sixth end in their semi-final and they couldn't battle back as they lost to Team David Bohn, 6-4. Bohn went on to lose the final against Team Anderson.

On the women's side, Team Armstrong came up just short of the final four. With Tamara Kolida, Stacy Sime, Morgan Kropelnicki, and Tiffany Armstrong making up the foursome, they, just like Team Forsyth, won three of their five games in the round-robin. With hammer going into the eighth end and up by a single point, Team Armstrong was in a good spot in their tie-breaker. Ultimately, it wasn't to be as Team Dickson stole two points and that gave them a 7-6 win.

Brady Oliveira has been nominated for the Canadian Football League's top individual award.

The star running back for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will go head-to-head against Chad Kelly of the Toronto Argonauts for the Most Outstanding Player award at the 2023 CFL Awards evening which takes place on Thursday, November 16.

In an all-star season for the Winnipeg native, Brady had nearly 400 more yards rushing than the next closest rusher in the league. With his 1,534 yards from scrimmage, Oliveira also racked up 13 touchdowns, nine of which were on the ground, for a Winnipeg team that finished 14-4 and will play in the West Division Final next Saturday, November 11. This was Brady's second 1,000-yard rushing season and his first time eclipsing the 1,500 mark. He is the 15th player in league history to reach 2,000 yards from scrimmage in a single season (2,016).

Oliveira is also nominated for the top Canadian award while Mike O'Shea has been nominated for the Coach of the Year award.

In other Blue Bomber news, Jermarcus Hardrick has been named a finalist for the league's Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman.

Ethan Myhre moved to Edmonton last year to join the OHA Edmonton U16 Prep team. A member of the Canadian School Sport Hockey League, Ethan showed signs of brilliance throughout the campaign after being offered a spot on the team.

When the season ended, Myhre returned home for the off-season, and while moving back to Edmonton was an option this year, the 16-year-old from Dauphin decided to stay put.

"It feels great to be back home around all of my friends," said Myhre. "Also I'm very happy to be living with my family again, I'm very happy that I decided to stay home."

After taking great strides in Edmonton, Myhre's new goal was to make the Parkland U18 Rangers. Chase Glover was a lock to make the team this year as one of the region's top goaltenders. So it was Myhre going up against Owen Martyniuk for the second spot.

The duo ultimately battled it out at the team's preseason tournament in Souris. In the club's first game against Yellowhead, Myhre turned away nine shots and he then made 19 saves in his second game while allowing just a pair of goals. With one more chance to impress the coaching staff in preseason play, Myhre made five saves across 10 minutes in the team's final preseason contest and when the dust settled, the duo of Chase Glover and Ethan Myhre was locked up.

Two years ago, Myhre was playing AA hockey in Dauphin and now, he's well into his first season of AAA hockey with the region's AAA club.

"It felt really good to make the team," offered Myhre. "I feel I developed a lot in Edmonton last year and I think that played a really big part in making the team this year."

Parkland is now in sixth in the league standings after a pair of wins over the weekend against the Kenora Thistles. At 4-4-2, Parkland has 10 points which is tied with Eastman, the Wild, and Norman. Sunday's game also marked a milestone for Ethan as he earned his first win with the club.

He made 22 saves, several of which were great ones as Parkland went on to double up the Thistles, 8-4. It was his first win and he's hoping that many more come along the way.

"It felt great to get that that first win and it was a relief, to be honest," said Myhre. "I'm happy that I was able to help the team win a game. I feel that I'm getting better every single game and I want to carry that on moving ahead."

The Rangers will remain on home ice this weekend for a pair of games against the Winnipeg Wild. Currently tied with the Wild in the standings, Parkland did beat them earlier this year in Winnipeg. Following the Wild, the Rangers are off to Morden for a pair of games against Morden before heading to Kenora for two games against the Thistles and that's followed by a contest against Yellowhead. The team's upcoming schedule presents them with a great chance to make a move up the standings.

"We're feeling pretty confident heading into the weekend," ended Myhre. "We know what we are capable of and we're looking forward to showing that on the ice."

The Manitoba Junior Hockey League once again has three teams in the Canadian Junior Hockey League's Top 20 rankings.

In fact, the MJHL is the only Junior A league in the country with three teams in the top 10. The top-ranked team this week is the Flin Flon Bombers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. The only Manitoban club in the SJHL, the Bombers are 13-1-1 this season as they lost their first regulation game of the campaign on Saturday. The Bombers have scored 79 goals this year, 19 more than any other team in the league.

Darnell Duff will be joined by the Voice of the Bombers, Rob Hart during the Dauphin Kings Power Play show which runs after the 4:00 p.m. news, weather, business and sports on Friday afternoon.

Back in Manitoba, it is again the Winkler Flyers, Steinbach Pistons and Dauphin Kings ranked.

#5 - Winkler Flyers (10-1-0-1)

The Flyers have been knocked out of the top spot after spending the past two weeks as the top-ranked team in the nation. With eight straight wins entering the MJHL Showcase, the Flyers earned their ninth straight win to start the season when they hammered Neepawa, 7-1. They then took a 2-0 lead against the Dauphin Kings the next day; however, the Kings forced overtime and ultimately won the game in a shootout as the Flyers came up short for the first time.

Four days later, the Flyers gave up a goal with less than two minutes left in a 4-3 loss against Steinbach as Winkler lost their second straight game and first in regulation. The Flyers would get back to their winning ways on Sunday night as they downed Niverville, 3-1.

This could be one of the best Flyers teams ever and they have still allowed only 19 goals against this season which is by far the fewest in the league with the Kings 27 against being the next closest. Winkler has a very dangerous goaltending duo in Liam Ernst of White City and Malachi Klassen of Winkler. Ernst has won four of his five games with a .952 save percentage to go along with a 1.00 goals-against average while Klassen is 5-1 with a .916 save percentage and a 1.82 goals-against average. As do many other top teams in the league, the Flyers use a well-balanced approach to find success as five players have at least 10 points, led by Trent Penner who has eight goals and seven assists. Jayce Legaarden has 12 points to his name.

With 10 wins in their first 12 games, Winkler should continue their winning ways to begin November with three games against teams near or at the bottom of the MJHL standings. Winkler will be in Dauphin to play the Kings on November 12 and Darnell Duff will broadcast that game beginning with the Parkland Source for Sports pregame show at 3:45.

What's next? November 03 @ Winnipeg Blues, November 04 @ Winnipeg Freeze, November 10 @ Swan Valley, November 11 @ OCN, November 12 @ Dauphin

#8 - Steinbach Pistons (11-2-1)

They have played two more games than Winkler, but the Pistons do lead the MGEU East Division and league respectively with 23 points. With 59 goals, Steinbach has scored the second-most in the league while the team has allowed 35 which is the third-fewest in the league.

Like Winkler, Steinbach has an easy start to November as they play three teams below them in the standings including the Steelers and Freeze, and the Stampeders in the middle. Steinbach has caught fire as of late as they have nine goals in their past two contests. The Pistons did slightly break on October 23 when they lost 4-3 to the Blizzard at the MJHL Showcase. Besides a loss against Selkirk back on October 6 when they were shut out, it has been a perfect October for the Pistons who are the defending league champions.

Playing out of the HyLife Centre in La Broquerie, the community has fully embraced Pistons hockey and the Pistons have been good to their fans at their interim facility (while their brand new arena is built) as Steinbach has won six of eight games on home ice and they have points in seven of eight.

Leo Chambers leads the way for Steinbach this year with 18 points in 14 games and eight players have produced at least 10 points this year. If there are any holes in this Steinbach roster, it would be between the pipes. While Cole Plowman and Beck Liden have been getting the job done, neither are household names. Plowman does have a solid .923 save percentage; however, he has been known to be inconsistent while Liden has struggled in his rookie MJHL campaign with a .890 save percentage to go along with a 2.59 goals-against average.

Nonetheless, Steinbach is making it work and while this year's team isn't as strong on paper as they were last year, they seem to be gaining steam and they will be championship contenders when the dust settles in March and into April.

What's next?  November 03 @ Winnipeg Freeze, November 04 vs Swan Valley, November 11 vs Selkirk, November 12 @ Portage, November 17 vs Swan Valley

#10 - Dauphin Kings (10-2)

After spending back-to-back weeks just outside of the Top 10 in the nation, the Dauphin Kings are officially at #10 this week, and rightfully so.

The Kings have been rolling on all cylinders as of late. After a tough loss against Niverville in their first game of the MJHL Showcase, Dauphin responded with a statement come-from-behind victory against Winkler, 3-2, in a shootout. Since that, Dauphin has scored 14 goals in their last two games. They put up seven against the Wolverines on Friday and another seven against the Freeze on Sunday.

Dauphin's power play is now at the top of the league after a slow start. The Kings were 11.1% on the man advantage going into the showcase and since, they are now at 31.4% which is by far the best in the league. With 16 goals on 51 chances, Dauphin has been extremely tough to stop when up a man or two. Dauphin has scored 13 power play goals in their last five games.

While the team's offence continues to improve as the season rolls on, defensive play has continued to be extremely strong with just six goals allowed over their last three games and their 27 against is the second-fewest in the league.

Naaman Hofer, who came over from the Freeze in the off-season, leads the team with three goals and 13 assists while Anthony Bax is just a pair of points back. Six players have recorded at least 11 points and the team's leading goal scorer Logan Walker has 11 points, eight of which are goals so far. Cole Sheffield has been one of the best goalies in the league as he has yet to lose with nine wins to his name and his .917 save percentage paired with a 1.96 goals-against average are both right near the top of the league.

The Kings still have a ways to go, but led by Doug Hedley, Dauphin has been dominant so far and they look just as good as anyone in the league.

What's next? November 03 vs Waywayseecappo, November 04 @ Virden, November 07 @ Neepawa, November 11 @ Neepawa, November 12 vs Winkler.

It was a perfect weekend for the Dauphin Clippers varsity girls' volleyball team.

Just a month ahead of hosting the provincial championships at Credit Union Place in late November, Dauphin was out capturing a championship at the Daniel McIntyre tournament in Winnipeg. The Clippers won all 10 sets in the round-robin as they did not lose a set.

Then in the playoffs, Dauphin was not to be stopped as they won their three playoff matches to capture the championship after they received a bye to the second round following their brilliant round-robin.

The provincials in Dauphin will take place from November 30 to December 1 and 730CKDM will have extensive event coverage.

The Dauphin Clippers grade 9 girls' second team was at Vincent Massey for an eight-team tournament.

The Clippers won five of their six round-robin sets to finish in first place going into the playoffs.

Then in the playoffs, the Clippers proved to be too strong as they lost just one set (in their semi-final against Neepawa). In a matchup against Vincent Massey in the final, the Clippers closed out their run to a championship with a straight set, 28-26, 25-21 victory.

Over in Ste. Rose, the Celtics Classic took place and it was dominated by a co-op team of players from McCreary and Alonsa. The team of players made up from both communities won six of their eight round-robin sets with only Glenboro finishing better with seven set wins compared to just one set lost.

Alonsa/McCreary then hammered Frontier before beating Elton in their next match.

They then downed Hapnot in the championship final.

Trayden Guiboche is well into his first season as a junior hockey player with the newest team in the Keystone Junior Hockey League.

A member of the newly-formed Waywayseecappo Wild, Guiboche says playing with the team has been a great honour. While the team has struggled out of the gate with seven straight losses to open their season, the Dauphin native has been a bright spot. Entering this week, Trayden is second in team scoring with five goals and four assists to his name.

"Things are going pretty well so far for me, I'm really enjoying playing with this team," said Guiboche. "We haven't won which is never great, but we continue to improve and we will get that first win soon."

Guiboche and the rest of the team will be back on the ice Wednesday at the Arena Complex in Waywayseecappo when they take on the 6-2 Peguis Juniors. There's no doubt that Guiboche's hockey journey has been a very exciting one and so has his journey on the ball diamond.

Throughout the summer, Trayden spends every weekend playing fastball and he was given the chance to represent the province at the Canada Summer Games earlier this year.

"The sport means a lot to me, it has already taken me far," said Guiboche. "I'm just going to continue pushing myself to my limits."

Trayden was introduced to the game when he was 11 by his grandpa and he has loved it ever since. Trayden's dedication and committment to the game has also earned the Dauphinite a prestigious award handed out by Softball Manitoba.

On Saturday, November 25, Trayden and his family will be in Winnipeg for Softball Manitoba's Annual Awards presentation where he will receive the Top Male Player award at the U17 and U19 level.

It will be the first time that Guiboche has won the Edgar Stevenson Memorial Award and he's thrilled to have been chosen as this year's recipient.

"That means a lot to me and it's something that I wasn't expecting," ended Guiboche. "I couldn't do it without my family members and all of my teammates as well, they are a big reason why I am the player I am."

The Parkland Super League of Curling opened play for the season on Sunday at the Dauphin Curling Club.

Standings

48 hours after scoring seven goals against the Waywayseecappo Wolverines, the Dauphin Kings did it again.

Wrapping up the weekend in Winnipeg, the Kings scored four power play goals, Anthony Bax was the hat-trick man and the Kings skated off with a convincing 7-2 win against the Freeze.

After the Freeze came out hard, the Kings found their stride and took over with four goals in the opening frame, two of which came on the man advantage and two were off the stick of Anthony Bax. His brother, Jordan, also found the back of the net in the first and Gabriel Bugeaud rounded out Dauphin's scoring in the opening frame.

Logan Walker scored with 10 seconds left in the second after Kylow Monkman scored for the Freeze earlier in the frame. In the third, Anthony capped off his hat-trick while Ethan Williment also scored and in the middle, Kyle Grysiuk scored for Winnipeg.

Dauphin has now scored 13 goals on the power play over their last five games. With the win, they move to 10-2 which has them one point behind Virden for first in the West Division; however, Dauphin does still have three games in hand.

The Kings will now return home to prepare for a rematch with the Wolverines on Friday night. Darnell Duff will broadcast that game beginning with the Parkland Source for Sports pregame show at 7:15.

The Parkland U18 Rangers have earned their first weekend sweep of the season.

Welcoming the Kenora Thistles to town for a pair of games this weekend, Parkland ended the weekend with an 8-4 win. Cash Clarkson and Tavyn Boychuk scored a pair of goals in the game for Parkland.

Alex Campbell, Cade Legaarden, Sam Swanton, and Ryzlie Nepinak also scored for the Rangers in the win while Ethan Myhre made 25 saves to record the win.

On Saturday, Chase Glover turned away 33 shots to record the win as Parkland skated past Kenora, 5-3.

Cash Clarkson had the hot stick with two goals while Ethan McMullan, Sam Swanton and Hayden Seib also scored in the victory.

With their two wins this weekend, the Rangers are now 4-4-2 on the campaign and their 10 points have them tied for sixth place in the standings. They will now welcome the Wild to town for a pair of games next weekend at Credit Union Place.

The Dauphin Clippers hockey team is rolling to start their season in the Westman High School League.

On Saturday night, Sully Fox led the way with a pair of goals as the Clippers beat the Chancellors, 5-2. William Miner, Boston Karlson and Liam Chartrand also scored for Dauphin.

To open the weekend on Friday, the Clippers beat the Huskies in a thriller. The game needed a 12 round shootout before the Clippers won, 5-4. Liam Chartrand opened the scoring in the game for Dauphin.

He also scored another goal while William Miner and Boston Karlson also found the back of the net. Dauphin has won three of their first four games of the season.

The Dauphin Clippers football team has earned the right to hoist the Murray Black Cup.

On a chilly Saturday afternoon at the high school field in town, the Clippers downed the Virden Golden Bears, 31-18, to claim the Rural Manitoba Football League's consolation championship.

Dauphin played great defensively and came up clutch on the offensive side of the ball to pull away from the Golden Bears.

"It was a great way to end our season," said Jeff Michasiw. "We had a game plan going in and we executed it, so I'm very proud of the guys.
