If you live in or around Swan River and want to lace up your skates, the Centennial Arena is the perfect spot.
Public skating is on Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. On Sunday, there's another public skating session from 4:45 to 6:15 p.m. These sessions run all winter.
Danielle Gordon-Broome, recreation director for the Town of Swan River, says participation varies.
It depends on what activities are happening around the community and if kids are away for hockey tournaments.
"In general, it is fairly well received. It's something that our community values," said Gordon-Broome. "People are happy they can skate at no cost. It really opens the doors for anyone who may not be able to otherwise afford organized sports."
Public skating at the Swan River Centennial Arena has been free to users for years. The Rotary Club sponsored free public skating for many years.
Gordon-Broome says they're blessed by the incredible community support. After the Rotary Club folded, they left a donation allowing users to skate for free for a couple more years.
"That's been incredible for our community," she added. "For giving access to people who couldn't afford otherwise. Or even for families to enjoy an activity to do."
With a new season well underway, the community support has continued.
The Swan River Lions Club has donated $5,000. Those funds mean free public skating at the Centennial Arena will continue. Whether you're a seasoned veteran or new to the sport, you can thank the Swan River Lions Club for free public skating.
Free skating continues in Swan River.
"We're really appreciative that they picked that up," added Gordon-Broome. "These individuals are so community-minded. They're considering recreational activities and the health and well-being. We are so grateful for their support over the past two years."
You can't use sticks or pucks during public skating. The Centennial Arena does offer sticks and pucks a few days a week.
