Statistics Canada reported in 2023 that there were about 7.6 million people aged 65 or older.

That represented nearly 20% of the population. By 2030, the number of seniors is projected to be between 21.4 and 23.4%.

To better prepare the aging population, the Interlake-Eastern Health Region is hosting Aging Well classes later this fall. The series begins on October 7 with level up your living, falls prevention meets funding. That will include information about preventing falls.

Other sessions include mind and memory, everything you wanted to know about community services, stronger for longer, and powerful tools for caregivers. There will also be two bonus presentations, eat well and be well, and relax and restore.

"You know, we all age. Knowledge is power," said Jan Keryluk, community wellness facilitator with IERHA. "You might not need the information now, but you may need it in the future. You may have a friend or family member who can use this information to live stronger and longer."

While the sessions don't begin for quite some time, Keryluk says community interest has sparked.

She says many are pre-registering and the Health Region expects a fantastic turnout. To pre-register, email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

It's a chance to invest in yourself, stay connected, and keep learning—because healthy aging is a lifelong journey.

"The great thing about this program is all six sessions are online using Microsoft Teams," said Keryluk. "That means you can participate from the comfort of your own home."

The sessions are open to anyone. Anyone interested in learning about community service supports in the province is encouraged to take part.
