It wasn't the finish he wanted, but Ste. Rose's Kurtis Luke finished his Midget AAA hockey career this past Sunday when he and the Rangers dropped their season finale against Southwest.
"It was a sad finish for sure," said Luke. "Especially because we couldn't pull off a win on Friday or Sunday. But, looking back it was probably the best three years of my life."
Since his first season with the Midget Rangers in 2015-2016, Luke has got significantly better each season. In the 2015 season, Luke had two points in 35 games. The next season in 42 games, Luke had 37 points and the Ste. Rose native led the team this year with a breakout year, recording 67 points (30 goals).
"I've been more confident each season," said Luke. "That year with two points was tough, but it only helped me because now I know what it feels like to not produce, and produce."
Luke's rights were traded to the Waywayseecappo Wolverines earlier this season, where he ended up playing one game, but he's not sure where he will end up next season.
"If I get offers from out West, I would definitely look at them," said Luke. "But, Wayway looks like a good possibility."
Luke notes he's just glad he grew up in the Parkland area because he wouldn't want to play with any other team.

The Dauphin Clippers varsity boys basketball team's season likely ended on Tuesday night, as they lost to the Swan River Tigers, 94-58.
It was game three of a best-of-three series between the two teams.

The Dauphin Kings fell behind 1-0 but dominated the majority of their game last night as they beat the Waywayseecappo Wolverines, 4-2 to finish off their home schedule for the season.
It took Wayway 10:10 to score the game's first goal, but the Kings came back with 2:24 left in the first as Matt Bartel snapped a beautiful shot under the crossbar to tie the game heading into the intermission.
The Kings took the lead 7:10 into the second as 20-year-old Wilson Northey scored his 11th of the season, and Kyle Oleksiuk notched his 17th at 9:22 into the frame as the Kings led, 3-1 after 40.
Wilson Northey scored his second of the game 8:53 into the third, while Wayway added one as well, as the Kings picked up a hard-fought two points.

The Ebb and Flow Razz Slo-Pitch Club Catch and Release Ice Fishing Derby is coming up on March 10th on the Ebb and Flow Lake.
"It's a great event to take part in because of the amount of fish caught," said Tyrone Desjarlais, Manager of the Razorbacks Ball Club. "For every four people, you catch probably at least one fish."
Early-bird tickets are on sale right now for just $40, and if you can't get an early-bird ticket the cost is $60.
You can also get your ticket on the day of the event with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. on March 10 at the Ebb and Flow Hall.
Included in the event is a 50/50, door prizes, and after the event from 3-7, there will be a cash bar at the Hall.

After a dominating win last week over the Swan River Tigers, the Dauphin Clippers varsity boys basketball team are back on the court this afternoon.
This time the game will be played in Swan as the teams play in game three of the best-of-three series.
The Tigers won the first game of the series by 13 points, but Dauphin dominated game two on their home court.
A win this afternoon would advance the Clippers to the Inter-Zone Championships, where a berth in the Provincial Championships will be on the line. A loss would most likely end the Clippers season.

Swan River's Trey Sauder will be in Thompson in under a week for the Manitoba Winter Games.
Sauder will be playing in the U-16 men's hockey tournament.
"It's a great opportunity," said Sauder. "Not everyone gets the chance to do it, so I just have to make the most of it."
The Games will feature the best U-16 men's hockey players in the province, which will be a challenge for the 14-year-old.
"I'm just trying to go to the gym as much as I can," said Sauder. "I need to be physically and mentally prepared for it."
Trey will play on Team West (White) at the Games and will be joined by seven other players from the Parkland Bantam Rangers on the team.
"I'm really looking forward to playing with my teammates from the Rangers," said Sauder. "And meeting new people, and playing with people I usually play against."
All the action kicks off at the C.A. Nesbitt Arena on March 4 for Trey and the rest of Team West White.

Ochre River's Emma Jensen represented the Dauphin Clippers at the MHSAA Curling Provincials this past weekend, and her and Makenna Hadway, Savanna Mansell, Jennifer Yaschyshyn, and Lane Prokopowich came home as Silver Medalists.
"It feels really awesome," said Jensen. "This is the first time a women's Clipper team has won a banner, so it was just really cool and special."
Heading into the Championships, Jensen said "We're hoping to win a few games, and we don't really know the competition out there. We'll get a feeling of the ice and hopefully, we can play our best the whole weekend."
Now Emma has her sights set on the Manitoba Winter Games that are set to start in just about a week in Thompson. She will be joined by Jaycee Terrick and Kaitlyn Szewczyk from McCreary, and Gilbert Plains Gracey Gulak as the ladies will compete in the U-18 women's event.
"I'm definitely feeling better about the Games now after High School Provincials," said Jensen. "I was pretty anxious about the Games in Thompson but now I'm definitely a lot calmer."
Jensen and her rink kick off their Games on March 4.
"We're just hoping to play our best out there," said Jensen. "If we do that, we should be able to get the outcome we want too."

After more than a week off, the Grandview Comets are gearing up for their semifinal best-of-five series against the Swan Valley Axemen.
Grandview easily swept Foxwarren in the first round of the playoffs, while things weren't quite as easy for Swan Valley as they lost one game against Moosomin before winning the series in four games.
"We need to stay disciplined against Swan," said TJ Warkentin, Captain for the Comets. "We have to play the right way, and the rest should work out."
The Comets and Axemen hooked up twice in the regular season, with the Comets winning one in overtime and the team lost the other, 8-2.
"We need to take care of our own end first," said Warkentin. "We know we can create offence, so it's about winning those battles in our own end, and then we can create offence off of good defensive play."
Game one of the series kicks off this Friday at the Minitonas Arena.

It’s the final home game of the season tonight for the Dauphin Kings as they welcome the Waywayseecappo Wolverines to town for the third and final time.
It’s been all Dauphin this year for the most part in the season series, going 4-1 with the only loss coming on home ice earlier this year.
Goals against have been a problem for the Kings as of late. Dating back to a 7-4 loss against OCN on February 14, the Kings have allowed 28 goals in five games, all of which are losses.
After being named to the MJHL’s Rookie All-Star Team, Jaymes Knee will look to continue his impressive season, and tonight will also feature a graduating player ceremony as Wilson Northey and Landon Lushanko will age out at the end of the regular season.
Game time tonight is set for 7:30, and season tickets for next season will be on sale.

Dauphin Kings Jaymes Knee has been named to the MJHL's Rookie All-Star Team.
"It definitely feels pretty good to be on there," said Knee. "My dad's pretty impressed, and I wanted to do it for my grandpa."
Knee has had a very quality campaign offensively, as he sits in a tie for third in rookie scoring with 35 points (11 goals) in 55 games.
"My linemates always find a way to get me the puck," said Knee. "They put me in good positions, and we find ways to put the pucks in the back of the net when we need."
Knee and the Kings play just three more games this season, with tomorrow being the first and it comes on home ice against the Waywayseecappo Wolverines.
"I just need to play a simple game," said Knee. "I just need to keep doing what I'm doing, and continue to get better."

The Peewee Pas Huskies will be helping out Oscar's Place big time, as the homeless shelter in the Pas will be receiving $15,000 from the Huskies after they were the winners of the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup.
"They've been going through a really tough time, and they were at risk of closing," said Jerome Conaty, Coach for the Huskies. "We didn't even have plans of entering the Good Deeds Cup, but then we got an email from Chevrolet saying we could, so we thought why not, and we ended up winning. We were the smallest community in the contest, so it's just surreal."
Jerome was told about a week ago that his team won the Cup when he was called by Chevrolet, but none of the players found out until a practice was scheduled for 6:00 a.m. this morning.
When the players arrived at the rink, they noticed their arena (Roy H Johnston Arena) was completely different. Throughout the weekend, crews worked through the night and changed all the logos on the boards to Chevrolet, Good Deeds and the Pas Huskies and the Huskies' dressing room was completely redesigned as well.
"The kids were in absolute shock," said Conaty. "They were still half-asleep and didn't even know what was going on. It was like a Hollywood production the crews put on. It was just amazing."
The $15,000 that Oscar's Place will be getting will go towards cots and other needs that are required.
"If we won, we knew the money was going to Oscar's," said Conaty. "Everyone is just so happy, and still kind of shocked, but it's such a great feeling for the Huskies, the community and Oscar's Place as well."
When asked what Good Deed is next up for the Huskies, Conaty noted anytime we can because Good Deeds don't just stop.
