It was a busy weekend for the Dauphin Clippers women's soccer team.

They were at the Minnedosa tournament as they prepare for Zone Championships.

Game # 1 vs Steinbach - Lost 5-1. Nicki Bich with one goal. Player of the game was Nicki Bich.

Game # 2 vs Swan River - Won 4-0. Mollie Nolan and Nicki Bich with two goals each. Player of the game was Tyra Delaurier.

Game # 3 vs Minnedosa - Lost 8-0. Player of the game was Kendra Suss.

The zones are set for this Thursday at Vermillion Sportsplex. Dauphin will play McCreary at noon.

It was by far their best defensive performance of the season, and they weren't too shabby on offence either.

That was the key to success for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers last night as they pumped the Edmonton Eskimos, 30-3 in Edmonton.

Kevin Fogg had a dominating game for the Blue & Gold, and once again it was against Edmonton.

Nearly four months ago in the season-opener, Fogg returned a missed field goal 110-yards back to the house. Yesterday, he forced one fumble, recovered another and scored on an interception.

Overall, the Bombers scored 20 points off seven turnovers.

Although he threw for just 179 yards, Matt Nichols was extremely efficient. He went 16 for 20.

Winnipeg is now back in action on Friday as they head to Ottawa.

The Parkland Midget Rangers will be in tough when they begin their season tonight.

They'll welcome the Brandon Wheat Kings to town for the first game of the season for Parkland and the second for the Wheaties.

Last night Brandon opened up their season with a 6-0 win against the Norman Northstars.

The Rangers will have a combination of rookies and veterans on the roster this year. Between the pipes, they'll be led by Dauphin's Zach Grouette and Russell's Keaton Ziprick.

Offensively the Rangers will need to get big seasons from the likes of Warren Jubenvill and Jaeger Lapointe.

For the first time this season, the Dauphin Kings will look to bounce back after a loss.

After a 3-2 defeat last night, the Kings are in the Automobile City tonight.

That's where they'll hook up with the Steinbach Pistons for the first time this season.

If the Kings hope to have success tonight they'll have to improve early in the contest.

Through the first three games of the season, the Kings have gotten stronger as the games have gone on, but have started slow each time out.

The Kings have also yet to score a goal on the power play. The team is now 0-12 while a man up. But, the clubs penalty kill has been stellar killing off 17 of the 20 penalties they've picked up.

Rookie Carter Sawchuk leads the team in scoring with three points.

The Kings won one of the three contests at T.G. Smith Centre last season.

Game time goes tonight at 7:30.

A questionable late penalty and goal ended up breaking the Kings winning streak tonight.

In front of a crowd of just over 200, the Selkirk Steelers sent their fans home happy with a 3-2 win. 

The Steelers opened up the scoring at the 9:21 mark and led 1-0 after 20. 

Carter Barley would increase the Steelers lead at 17:58 of the second.  

But, the Kings quickly responded. With 30 seconds left in the second, Avery Smith scored a beauty bar down to cut the deficit in half. 

Then with just 1:34 left, Jacob Evans took a shot and continued to drive the net hard and picked up his rebound and tied the game. 

With 1:09 left, the referees called Riley Shamray on closing his hand on the puck which was a call that was questionable to most.

Dauphin did a great job of killing off the penalty until there was just 7.2 left on the clock.

Off a mad scramble in front, Connor Barley scored his second of the game which proved to be the winner. 

Brennan Kitchen had another very good game. He stopped 43 of 46 shots in the game. 

The Kings are back on the ice tomorrow as they take on the Steinbach Pistons. Puck drop for that one is 7:30.

It's time to get in the waters for all you young swimmers in the Parkland as the Gators swimming club will start up on October 1.

The swim assessment starts up at 6:30 at the Parkland Rec Complex pool. It's open to anyone under the age of 18 and as young as someone who's 7.

"To successfully complete the assessment, a minimum of a level four is required," said Mel Sobering, Coach. "That means you'll need to swim about 1.5 lengths of the pool without stopping at all."

If you're a young swimmer in the Parkland and you're wondering why you should join, Mel knows why.

"The swim team is a really fun club to run," said Sobering. "The kids learn swimming skills, speed swimming, diving, flip turns and they have the chance to compete in events across Manitoba. If they do really well, we also take part in events across Western Canada."

There is no fee to do the assessment on October 1, and you can just show up around 6:00 p.m. if you want to try.

What Else?

There will also be a Kick-Off camp that goes this Sunday and is for more experienced swimmers and takes place from 10:00 a.m.- 3:30 p.m.

"We're going to have a variety of presentations and different activities going on throughout the day," said Sobering. "And, of course, we're going to do lots of swimming and running to get everyone ready for the season."

Dauphin's William Hlady is back in Iowa.

He's set for his second year with the Iowa Wesleyan Tigers baseball team.

Three days ago, the Tigers held their annual "Fall Classic" game and things went well.

"We won that game by one," said Hlady. "It was an exciting game and really close all the way through. I think it was a pretty good start and will turn things around for us."

Before reporting back to Iowa Wesleyan, William was provided with a pretty unique opportunity. To start the summer he played for the Dauphin Brewers. He then moved on to the Western Major Baseball League and played for the Melville Millionaires.

The WMBL features some of the top college ballplayers from around North America. 

"That was a really fun learning experience," said Hlady. "The league was super competitive and the hitters were excellent."

"I got a good chance to learn things about myself," he added. "Things didn't always go the way I wanted them to. But, I learned how to keep control and not get too frustrated while on the mound. I had a great time out there."

Ever since he was a young kid, the 18-year-old knew he wanted to play ball at a high level. There is no doubt that he's achieved that, and he's seen improvement in his game as well at the college level.

"Oh yeah, I really think I've improved in the last couple of years," added Hlady. "My breaking balls are a lot sharper this year and I've developed a changeup this year. I've learned how important it is to place your pitch because if you don't, you'll get killed out there. It's all about keeping the ball down in the strike zone and getting hitters off their balance."

Last year William and the Tigers struggled. They went 7-33 and went 0-22 in conference play. But, the hard-throwing righty is thinking things will be different this season.

"I feel we should be a stronger ball club this year," added Hlady. "We have quite a few freshmen that came in this year and they're pretty talented. I think some of us lost our drive last year to compete. That can't happen. We need to battle all season no matter what's happening. I'm looking forward to the campaign."

The team will now take a break until February when they begin their full-on schedule.

The Swan Valley Stampeders officially have a new Head Coach and General Manager.

The organization announced that Barry Wolff is the new man.

Wolff brings 23 years of junior hockey coaching experience to the valley. Most recently he was the HC/GM of the Coquitlam Express of the BCHL from 2013-17. In his first season with the club, he led the Express to the BCHL title.

Barry has also been a member of the coaching staff for Team Canada West at the World Jr. A Challenge, where he won gold in 2015.

"When it came down to it, Barry was clearly the best applicant we had," said Pat Morden, Stamps President. "We love how much experience he has and he's very known around hockey in the country. He just seems like a great guy and that comes from many people that we've talked to that have worked with him and for him."

"He really cares about the game and what he's doing," said Morden. "He's an all-around hockey guy, and will be a great addition to our club."

The Stampeders are back on the ice tomorrow as they welcome the Neepawa Natives to the Centennial Arena. It'll be Barry's first game behind the bench for the team. He arrived in town yesterday.

With the success he's had, Pat believes Barry will bring in instant success.

"I think he will. Darren has laid a pretty good foundation to start the season and will be a big part of things going forward," added Morden. "We're confident Barry will be able to continue with what we've been doing. We're looking forward to him getting behind the bench and starting off his time here."

"He's really anxious to get things going," Morden added. "That what was something that came up in our discussion really early. He's a coach and that's what he wants to do. He's chomping at the bit to get going."

Darren Webster will continue as the team's Director of Player Personnel.

The Dauphin Kings couldn't have asked for a better start to their season. The team beat the Virden Oil Capitals twice last weekend.

Now, the Kings will begin their first extended road trip of the season. Tonight, they're in Selkirk taking on the Steelers.

After last Sunday's win, the Kings didn't get long to celebrate as they were right back on the ice for a practice on Monday.

"It was pretty easy for the guys to come to the rink because we had a really good weekend," said Doug Hedley, Head Coach/GM. "I think the most impressive thing about practice right now is the intensity and speed the guys are competing at. It's good to see at this kind of year. We obviously still have a few extra guys so we have some strong battles going on."

Heading into the season, the Steelers were widely regarded as one of the best teams in the league. But, they have faltered early in the MJHL season. They lost last week 6-1 against Waywayseecappo.

Despite that loss, the Kings know the Steelers will have a lot more to bring to the table come game time tomorrow.

"They beat Steinbach to open the season and we know they're very offensive-minded," added Hedley. "They have six guys that would be top six on any team in the league. If they ever start clicking, they're going to be really tough. They have good some good players on the back end and good goaltending. There's no doubt they're going to be good."

The game will feature the return of Grady Hobbs. He missed the first two games of the season as he served a suspension from last season.

After missing the first couple of days of practice, Marc Antoine-Couture was back to full contact in yesterday's practice, while Bryon Fobair remained wearing a no-contact jersey.

Roblin's Jaden Townsend has paid his dues in Swan Valley in the past two seasons.

Now, he's already three games into his third season with the club. So far, the Stampeders are enjoying some early success as they sit with a 2-1 record. 

"I would say things have gone very good so far," said Townsend. "We had those two quick ones. We had a little bit of a wake-up call against Virden, but I think everything's starting to come together. We have some guys coming from the WHL and in the states that will be super beneficial."

Jaden will also play a bigger role on this year's team.

Not only will he be asked able to produce more offence, but he will serve as the team's 20th captain in team history.

"It's an honour and a privilege to be the captain for the 20th season," added Townsend. "We have such a great group of guys and it just feels so amazing. I'm excited to help lead these guys to hopefully a long playoff run."

On top of being a leader in the dressing room so far, Townsend has also been shining on the ice.

In the team's three games, he already has five points (2 G).

Last year he picked up 26 points, so if he keeps this pace up, he's definitely on pace for a career year.

"I feel like I just have a lot more confidence in myself," said Townsend. "I have some great teammates who help me as well and some of the bounces are going my way. It's been a great start, and I'm hoping I can keep it going.

Despite the team's most recent loss to Virden. Jaden is still confident with the team's abilities going forward.

"I believe we have a good chance of having a great season," said Townsend. "We have a great group of guys, and I'm just excited for what the rest of the season holds. It's going to be a lot of fun."

If you're in the valley, Jaden knows exactly why you should head down to watch the Stamps live.

"We have a quick team," added Townsend. "We're all here and we want to win games. We're hungry, and we work hard every single shift. The more support we can get the better."

The Ste. Rose Celtics senior boys soccer team are the 2018 Turtle River School Division Champions.

They beat Alonsa 6-2 yesterday to win the title.

"It was really exciting for our boys," said Doug Timlick, Coach. "We've been working on building up our soccer program here in the last couple of years. We're a young team but we have a lot of bodies. We only have two grade 12's but everyone is really eager to learn and give it their all."

The Celtics were led by a fantastic game from Jayden Timlick. He scored five of the team's six goals. Jason Biletski scored the team's other marker.

"He had a good game but it really was a team effort," added Doug. "He was the one who put the ball in the net but all of his teammates worked hard to give him chances. It really was a team win."

Ste. Rose will now continue their season as they prepare for the Zone Championships next week. They're on Thursday at Vermillion Sportsplex and first up for the Celtics is a semifinal date against the Dauphin Clippers. 

"We know Dauphin is a bigger and a more established soccer school," said Timlick. "They have more experience than us. But, our boys are eager and they're looking forward to the challenge to see how they can match up with them."

Being the #3 seed heading into the three-team tournament, Doug knows they're the underdogs.

"I think being the underdog takes some pressure off of us," said Timlick. "We're working hard and we just plan on going out there and giving it our all. We don't really have any pressure on us, we're just excited."

The Celtics and Clippers will take to the field at 12:00 p.m. next Thursday, October 4. The winner of the game will challenge the top-seeded Swan River Tigers at 2:00 p.m.
