Kings Meet Dogs

After winning their second straight game last night, it’s a quick turn around for the Dauphin Kings as they’re in Portage tonight.

For the second time this season, the Kings will challenge the first place Terriers. In the first meeting, Portage won 3-1.

Dauphin has been on a roll for about three weeks now. Winners of four of their last five, Dauphin’s only blip along the way was against Neepawa last Saturday.

In the last two games alone, Dauphin has scored 17 goals and they’ve only given up four.

Portage, meanwhile, is on a slide. They’ve lost three straight games with their most recent being against Steinbach on Friday.

Despite the slide, Portage is still first in the league with 10 wins.

Tonight ends a two-game weekend for Dauphin and they’ll be extremely busy next week. They play on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.

The Brandon Wheat Kings longest road trip of the season wasn’t perfect, however, they did end things on a high note.

On a night where a Riley Ginnell scored his first goal of his Western Hockey League career, the Wheat Kings beat the Swift Current Broncos handily, 5-1 on Saturday night.

Brandon finished their trip at 3-4 and they’re now 6-9 on the campaign.

Despite getting the two points at the end, things didn’t start well for Brandon. Brecon Wood put Swift Current up just 5:15 into the first. Hendrik De Klerk had the lone assist. From that point on, it was all Brandon.

Luka Burzan scored 6:55 in and that was the start of a solid night for the team’s leading scorer. The game tying goal was assisted by Jonny Lambos and Cole Reinhardt.

Tied at one after 20 minutes, Brandon almost immediately got on the board in the second. Just 45 seconds in, Connor Gutenberg gave Brandon their first lead of the game at 2-1. Luka Burzan and Braden Schneider had the assists on the power play and game-winning goal.

Brandon was far from done offensively. Now it was Ginnell’s turn. Riley scored his first goal after Jake Chiasson set him up.

With a 3-1 lead, Brandon was not done. With 5:34 left in the middle frame, Ben McCartney wired home his sixth of the young season as Brandon took a three goal lead.

Just 1:14 into the third, Luka Burzan scored his second of the game and seventh of the season as Brandon capped off the trip with a more or so dominating four goal victory.

Ethan Kruger made his eighth straight start and made 22 saves in the win.

The Dauphin Clippers football team are getting ready to play for a title after a big win today.

Playing on the road in a Murray Cup semifinal, the Clippers won an 18-16 game against Parkwest.

”It was a tough and emotional game today,” said Cam Bennet.

Dauphin will now play Neepawa in the finals next weekend in Neepawa.

”We have some things to work on, but it’s nice that we’re going to be playing for a prize at the end,” concluded Bennet.

After an 11 goal performance on Tuesday, the Dauphin Kings offence went off again.

This time, they scored six goals as they beat the visiting Winnipeg Blues, 6-2.

It was Dauphin’s fourth win in their past five games.

It was, however, Winnipeg that scored first. 2:28 into the second, Jack Oleksiuk fired one past Matthias Smith on the power play.

That’s when Dauphin caught fire. Carter Sawchuk scored his seventh goal of the season at the 3:49 mark to tie it up. It was Sawchuk’s fifth goal in the last two games and it was assisted by Koby Morrisseau and Andrew Liwiski.

At the 6:44 mark, Baron Thompson made it 2-1 for Dauphin. On the power play less than a minute and half later, Cole Dekoninck made it 3-1.

Then with 1:58 left in the second, Winnipeg trimmed the deficit to 3-2, but Dauphin took over after that.

Before the second was over, Parker Fofonoff made it 4-2 with 1:20 left. Landon Russell and Noah Wagner got the assists.

The Kings scored two more in the third. The first was on the power play at the 5:57 mark as Baron Thompson snapped home his second of the night.

Cole Dekoninck scored his second of the game with 2:06 left as Dauphin skated off with a convincing 6-2 win.

The Kings will now look to make it five wins in their last six tomorrow night when they’re in Portage taking on the Terriers.

The Parkland U18 Rangers couldn’t get anything going today in a 7-0 loss against the Central Plains Capitals.

The Capitals scored three goals in the first, one in the second, and another three in the third as they picked up their sixth win of the year as they’re 6-2.

Parkland, meanwhile, is 1-7. Keaton Ziprick made 22 saves in the loss.

Next up for the club is a game against the Bruins on Sunday afternoon at Credit Union Place. Gametime is 1:30.

The Dauphin Clippers varsity boys volleyball team ended their great run at the Tec Voc tournament with a second place finish in Winnipeg.

After placing first in their pool yesterday, the team beat Shaftesbury, 25-18, 25-23 in the quarterfinals earlier today.

In the semifinals, the team nicknamed the “Mighty 7” dispatched of Leo Remillard, 25-19, 25-16.

Tec Voc ended Dauphin’s run in the final with a straight set win on their home court to claim the title.

Dauphin finished the tournament with 11 set wins and they lost just three.

Dauphin’s JJ Love was named Tournament All-Star.

The Dauphin Clippers hockey team continued their preseason with another successful effort.

The team beat the Major Pratt Trojans, 3-2 earlier today in the first all Parkland battle of the season.

It took overtime to find a winner, when Ashton Hlady scored his second of the game to win it for Dauphin.

Cohen Smigelsky also scored for the Clippers in the win.

The Dauphin Kings will look to make it four wins in their last five games tonight. They welcome the Winnipeg Blues to town as the club wraps up their three-game home stand.

The set of home games started with a 2-1 loss against Neepawa.

However, Dauphin is coming off their most impressive performance in recent years. They hammered the Selkirk Steelers on Tuesday, 11-2.

Dauphin’s power play improved on Tuesday and it’s now fourth in the league at 19.2%. The clubs penalty kill is at sixth.

Winnipeg, meanwhile, are 4-9-1 this season and their power play is at the bottom of the league.

Dauphin beat Winnipeg back on Thanksgiving Weekend, 4-1 back in Winnipeg.

Things get going at 7:30.

The Parkland u18 Rangers are in Portage tonight. They play the Central Plains Capitals as they’ll look for their second win of the season.

The team plays at Credit Union Place tomorrow against the Bruins.

The Dauphin Clippers varsity boys volleyball team had a fantastic night yesterday playing at the Tec Voc tournament in Winnipeg.

They finished first in their pool by winning seven of eight sets.

They started off by beating Warren, 25-17, 25-17. That was followed by a dominating 25-17, 25-18 win over Stonewall.

The team hit the court for two late games at night. They beat St. Maurice, 25-21, 25-18. Finally, they split with Maples, 25-21, 21-25.

Behind two touchdowns and 221 yards through the air from Zach Collaros, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers won a thriller against Calgary, 29-28.

The win gives Winnipeg some confidence moving into playoffs as the game wrapped up their regular season.

Down 28-26 with under two minutes left, Collaros marched the Bombers down the field into Justin Medlock range. Medlock did the rest as he kicked a game-winning field goal for the Bombers.

Andrew Harris also ran for 64 yards.

The win ends Winnipeg’s season at 11-7. They will now wait to see what’s up next in the playoffs.
