Dauphin's Fire Chief was recognized over the weekend.

Cam Abrey was presented with a King Charles III Coronation Medal by the Canadian Association of Fire Fighters.

The medal, which was presented on Saturday in Montreal, recognized Abrey for his work with the CAFC.

"Over the past two years in my role as President of the Manitoba Association of Fire Chiefs, I represented the Manitoba Fire Service to the National Advisory Council.  I also sit on four other sub-committees for the CFAC and participate in those monthly meetings.  It is quite an honour to be recognized for those contributions on a national level."

Abrey was one of three Manitoba fire chiefs to receive the award, joining Steinbach Fire Chief Kelvin Toews and Deputy Chief Scott Wilkinson from Winnipeg.

Expectations are high across the city as a veteran-laden Dauphin Kings squad embarks on a new season.

Kings' Director of Business Operations Christian Laughland (lock-land) says that optimism has been reflected in season ticket sales, which have been strong so far.

"People have been wondering if you can still get (season tickets).  They are still available by coming down to (Credit Union Place) and asking for a sheet.  We will give you one and you can sign up, write down the seats that you want and then pay for them all at the ticket office.  Just the overall buzz about the hockey club has been really good this year so it is exciting."

Laughland says they will have a number of special promotional events throughout the season, including Ag Appreciation night in November, hockey card night and Tractor Lotto draw games in December, and the ever popular Ukrainian night in January.

Fire has closed the closure of a well-known restaurant in Swan River. 

Members of the Swan Valley Fire Department were called out at 12:19 AM Sunday night to reports of heavy smoke coming out of the front and back of the Pizza Place on Main Street. 

The main fire was found in the kitchen area of the restaurant, but smaller spot fires, fire extension, heavy smoke, and heat provided further challenges for crews.

Crews also put out small fires on the roof of the building, and also found some smoke and fire extension inside a connecting business.

The fire commissioner's office is investigating the exact cause of the fire.

Damage amounts have not been released, and fortunately nobody was injured as a result. 

A post this morning on the Pizza Place's Facebook page stated they would be closed until further notice.

In the courts this week, a Dauphin man made another appearance in relation to an aggravated assault case from November of 2022.

40-year-old Wayne Becks also faces charges that include uttering threats, and is set to return to court in Brandon on September 26th.

And Marc Dorais was also back in a Winnipeg courtroom.

The 54-year-old from Ethelbert faces several charges including Arson with Disregard to Human Life following a June 1st house fire in the Parkland community.

He remains in custody until his next appearance October 17th in the Manitoba capital.

A recent press release from the Manitoba government is paving the way for the future of electricity in the province.

Manitoba's Affordable Energy Plan launches efforts to build ties between Indigenous Governments, and invest in Wind energy.

Premier Wab Kinew looks forward to this investment in wind, as well as some to maintaining existing hydroelectric stations saying "building out the grid we’ll keep rates low for everyone and put more Manitobans to work in good union jobs."

Environment and Climate Change Minister Tracy Schmidt stated a goal of net zero emissions by 2050 as part of this announcement.

Dauphin's Culture Days are now officially on after the meet-the-makers market last night.

There will be no shortage of activities in the next few weeks, featuring writing, art, plays, movies, and more.

Watson Art Center Director Cam Bennet gives us a taste of what events to expect:

"There are so many I can't even mention them all.  I will say that Yard Fringe, which is kind of the signature event of culture days, is on the 29th and the Viking Camp. If you go to anything, go and check out the Viking Camp."

The Viking camp will be in town on September 29th too, along with the Crocus Quilters Outdoor Show and the Yard Fringe.

Among the activities, a special playing of Dauphin's edition of "Co-op The Musical" will take place at the CountryFest Community Cinema on October 13th.

The Dauphin and District Community Foundation is once again taking applications for their fall intake.

Kit Daley with DDCF notes that the organization has seen some changes this year that could open the door to even more opportunities.

"Previously, we could only grant to registered charities and qualified donees, how ever now organizations that are doing charitable work that will further DDCF's charitable purpose can apply. we re still adapting to these changes, so i'm simply telling potential applicants if there's any confusion, or you're wondering if you can apply give me a call at our office at 204 638 4598  and we can go through it together."

Daley says that submissions for a slice of funding often come in during the last week of the process, but you shouldn't wait.

"Our intake is open now until October 15th, and we'll have just over $92,000 available for organizations to apply for the fall intake."

If you are part of an organization that looks better to the community in one way or another, be sure to stop by the DDCF and apply for the fall intake.

The Swan River RCMP are on the look out for a man who's involved in a shooting.

On September 18, at approximately 8:00 am, Swan River RCMP received a report of a female who had been brought to the Swan Valley Health Centre who had wounds from a firearm.

The investigation has determined that a 48-year-old female from the community was walking outside of a multi-unit residence in Swan River when she was shot by someone in a passing vehicle. The female approached a passerby and got them to drive her to the Swan Valley Health Centre.

A white SUV was seen in the area and police believed it was involved in the incident. Police located the SUV and determined the female registered owner of the vehicle was not involved. However, evidence that a firearm was used was located inside the vehicle, and the vehicle was seized.

Officers continue to look for information about the shooting, but do not believe this was a random incident.

The victim was treated and released from hospital.

This fall, Desiree Dorian and The Northern Pikes will grace the stage at the Watson Art Center, but what if we could have big musicians all year?

Cam Bennet notes that the balcony in Watson gets up to 32 degrees during the hot summer, which is too hot for shows, and he's looking to keep Watson the coolest place in town.

"This has been talked about for countless years, since I've moved to Dauphin. The idea that the watson needs some type of way to cool the building in the summer. Basically, we can only operate 9 and a half months of the year so, we want to make the watson -as you said- the coolest building in town! not that it isn't already, but even cooler, right?" 

He aims to raise $12,000 and shave 12 degrees Celsius off the heat during the summer.

"We're just asking for a sort of a little bit more than loose change in your couch type of thing, but we think that $12,000 is an acheivable goal for this community. We know that the Watson is near and dear to a lot of people in the community and we think that by putting in this heat pump technology, we can open for 12 months of the year and we can generate revenue for 12 months of the year."

Donators will be entered into a draw for a concert series set of 4 tickets for next year, and you can find all the details at watsonartcentre.com.

The Paws for a Cause walk and run is set for this Saturday at Vermillion Park, raising funds for the Parkland Humane Society.

Both adults and children can take part in either a 2k or 5k walk

Janine Daniluck is with the planning committee for this event, and she has a full day of fun planned.

"We'll have different speakers that are going to be speaking a little bit about the history of the shelter,  we're going to have a 50/50 and silent auction. We're going to have a kid zone, which was a real hit last year, so there will be a lot of fun kids' activities. There's also going to be a BBQ available which is going to be co-hosted by the DRCSS culinary team." 

Registration goes from 8-10 am, with the walk/run beginning at 10 am.

You can also bring your dog for the walk, just make sure they are on a leash.

The Dauphin Kings 2024 regular season home opener is tomorrow (Saturday) night at Credit Union Place, and Assiniboine College Parkland Campus is the sponsor of that game.

Campus Administrative Assistant Stacy Purdey says they have some big plans for that night.

"We have partnered with the Kings and Dauphin Recreation to bring you a pre-game parking lot party.  It will take place in the South parking lot at Credit Union Place.  We are going to have a giant bouncy castle, we will set up some nets for street hockey, there will be a beer gardens, and some of the Kings players will come out and join us."

The party begins at 5:30, and Campus Director Carol Stewart hopes college alumni will join them at the game.

"If you are an alumni or a former student or faculty or a friend of the college, please stop by our campus at 520 Whitmore Avenue East any time this week during regular business hours to pick up a pair of free tickets."

Purdey says the event gives them a great chance to engage with the public and answer any questions that they may have about the college.
