Update: Fire Destroys Ochre River Home

A fire in Ochre River engulfed and destroyed a house in the community over the weekend.

"Just after 3 on Sunday morning, police were called to a structure fire in Ochre," said Rob Tuff, Dauphin RCMP Constable. "When they arrived on the scene, they determined that the homeowner and lone occupant was outside. The fire started in front of the home. Members of the Ochre River Fire Department and later the Dauphin Fire Department were called to extinguish the blaze."

"The fire is being investigated with help from the Office of the Fire Commissioner as well," he added. "A cause has not yet been determined."

No major injuries or fatalities were reported.

Approximately 500 people were evacuated last night from Sapotaweyak Cree Nation, located north east of Swan River.

A forest fire which is burning out of control has forced people to The Pas and Swan River.

Currently the evacuation was for the elderly, people with medical conditions or young children; however a full evacuation could be ordered if the fire gets any closer to homes or the air quality gets worse.

Three water bombers and a helicopter were called in yesterday to fight the fire.

We have no confirmation on the size of the fire or what started it, but we’ll keep you updated as more information comes in.

RCMP in Flin Flon responded to a fatal stabbing on Saturday morning.

They received a call about a disturbance at 6:00 in the morning on Bellevue Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers found two people stabbed during the course of an altercation.

A 23-year-old female from Flin Flon, was transported to the hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

The second victim, a 22-year-old female from Flin Flon, was also transported to hospital in stable condition.

Faith Linklater, 23, from Flin Flon, is charged with one count of second degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

She is to appear in Provincial Court in The Pas on Tuesday.

RCMP and the Major Crimes Unite and Forensic Identification Services are still investigating.

Gardening season is in full bloom, and so the West End Garden in Dauphin.

Alison Moss, Community Liaison for the Dauphin Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation, tells us about the project.

“We’re really excited about this project. We’ve seen it come a long way over the years. Currently there are 18 raised garden beds, located in the west end of Dauphin at 205 Railway Avenue. So there are 18 raised garden beds and 6 were added a year or so ago. The garden beds are a mix of public and private. So gardeners can call in, and we have a lot of returning gardeners that take responsibility for a garden bed. They plant what they wish and harvest what they wish.”

Currently all the garden beds are spoken for.

Some berry bushes and apple trees have been planted for the public to enjoy as well a kids’ friendly eat free box will be set up with garden fresh items like sugar snap peas and carrots.

Moss would like to see the Little Free Library, which was created last year, expand.

Grandview’s outdoor swimming pool is getting ready to make a big splash this season.

The pool is fully staffed and preparations are underway to get it open for the summer.

Jill Wiebe, Grandview Rec Director, tells us about swimming lesson registration coming up.

“We have swimming lesson registration coming up in Grandview. It’s happening in the arena lobby on May 23. We will open the door at 5:30 p.m. and registration goes until 7:30.”

Wiebe asks parents to bring their child’s health card, payment for the lessons and know in advance which session they want their child in.

The Grandview Pool is also a chapter of Manitoba Swim Ability and will be offering sessions starting on July 26.

Those who are eligible to sign up for the Swim Ability program can sign up and pay $20 at the registration night.

Wiebe is still looking for volunteers to swim with kids for this program and if you are interested, you can contact her at 546-5260.

Last night’s fire just west of Camperville has been reported under control with just a bit of smoke left in the area.

We’ll have more details on the cause of the fire as soon later on.

Yesterday’s fire in downtown Brandon destroyed one building, severely damaged three others and left hundreds of people without a home.

The fire began at Christie’s Office Plus around noon, located off of Pacific Avenue and Seventh Street.

Strong winds blew embers across the street and set the Massey Manor residence and the Beer and Vendor on Rosser Avenue on fire.

Mutual Aid was called and fire departments from Souris-Glenwood, Oakland-Wawanesa, Carberry and CFS Shilo responded to assist Brandon.

Christie’s Office Plus was complete lost to the fire. Massey Manor will have extensive water damage and the rooftop was completely destroyed. The Beer and Vendor will mostly likely be a loss as well.

As of midnight, firefighters were still trying to extinguish another fire on the east and west side of a building that houses Collyer’s Sales and Service, Brandon Boxing Club and Kazic Kontracting, just beside Christie’s Office Plus.

No one was injured in the fire and the cause of the fire is not known at this time.

Approximately 200 residents from the Massey Manor are without accommodation and the Red Cross and Manitoba Emergency Social Services are working on the matter.
