A 34-year-old man from Dauphin is facing charges after he was arrested.

On June 12, at 4:00 p.m., Dauphin RCMP located Kyle Sutherland. Sutherland had a warrant for his arrest. He was arrested without incident.

While they were searching, officers found a large quantity of Canadian cash along with methamphetamine.

He faces charges of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime over $5,000, and Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking.

Anglers from as far away as B-C and Ontario have converged on the Russell area for the 26th annual Prairie Classic Walleye tournament.

Fishing goes Friday and Saturday, and director Eric Labaupa (la-bow-puh) says Lake of the Prairies is ready for the 74 teams that will be taking part.
"This lake, I will argue with anybody, is one of the top walleye lakes in the country, or in North America for that matter.  So there is always fish here; you do not need to be a very good fisherman to catch fish here.  There has been some cool weather here lately, so the competitors will have to adjust what they are doing.  But I was on the lake on Wednesday and we caught about a dozen, so that was not bad."
The awards will be handed out tomorrow night at the Russell Multiplex.
Over $40,000 in cash is up for grabs, including $17,500 for the first-place team.

In 49 days, Ukrainian culture will be front and centre.

Taking centre stage and embracing all the beauty that comes with the Ukrainian culture. Canada's National Ukrainian Festival (CNUF) runs from August 1 to 3. Tickets are on sale now, and there are fewer than 20 upper camping spots available.

"I think we're sitting in a pretty good spot, just waiting for the weekend to happen," said Kayla Gillis. "We have a few more things to put in place. Entertainment is ready to go, and stay tuned for schedules."

Before that, festival organizers are giving you a chance to get a head start on the festivities. There will be a kick-off party in Dauphin on Saturday, beginning at 11:00 a.m. It'll be at Obsolete Brewing Company, and it'll be a day to remember.

"We're cooking you breakfast, lunch, and supper. We're going all day and night," offered Gillis. "We have Midlife Crisis joining us from Saskatoon. We have dancers starting at two and another session starting at six."

There will be a Toonie Raffle, a BBQ fundraiser with delicious Kuba burgers, merchandise, and even a bouncy castle. There is no admission.

"If there's anyone out there that would like to have a good meal, certainly come out and check it out," said Cory Lafontaine. "We will also have CNUF merchandise, so that's very exciting. It's a tiny sampling of what you're going to experience at the festival in August."

The 60th CNUF runs in August, and on Saturday, you can get a head start on the festivities.

The wait is almost over.

Dauphin's Countryfest is in 13 days, starting on June 26. Ahead of the festival, Countryfest announced they're inviting wildfire evacuees from Manitoba, Creighton, and Denare Beach to the festival, free of charge. Evacuees have an opportunity to receive a general admission ticket along with camping and parking.

Duane McMaster is president of Dauphin's Countryfest.

"We looked around and saw all of these people who have been affected," said McMaster. "We thought we could help displaced people who maybe won't be able to get a holiday in."

Evacuees wishing to attend Dauphin’s Countryfest are asked to call the office at 6223700 to register. There is only a limited amount of general admission tickets, camping, and parking passes available for evacuees. You're asked to contact them as soon as possible.

The festival opens with the CKDM Rockin' Thursday Night Kickoff party. That features Dallas Smith and Default.

"We usually start having our weekly board meetings up at the site starting in June," offered McMaster. "It's nice to get back up there, we get to see the place getting spruced up. You can feel the excitement."

If you're on the fence about attending this year, there are so many reasons why you should. The annual event is Canada's longest-running country music festival. Jordan Davis and Josh Ross, two of the hottest performers in country music, will tear up the night.

John Michael Montgomery, Lonestar, Meghan Patrick, Jackson Dean, and the Road Hammers are a few more of the performers that will be on stage.

"We've got some local Manitoba talent. Desiree Dorion, Kate's Outlaw," ended McMaster. "We would love for everyone to support us. We're showing our support for the evacuees in the province. It would be great if everyone came down to celebrate everything Dauphin's Countryfest is. We can't wait."

That's Dauphin's Countryfest from June 26 to 29.

Lundar is ready to throw a party this weekend as the annual Luudar Ag Fair goes on Friday and Saturday.

There will be pancake breakfasts both mornings, as well as a Saturday morning parade.
4-H events are set for Friday morning, with the annual 4-H beef sale taking place that afternoon.
There will also be home living displays, a midway, and antique tractor pulls on both days.

Dauphin's Pride celebrations are set to roll tomorrow (Friday).

Participants are encouraged to be at Vermillion Park by 4 pm to line up, with the parade beginning shortly after that.
Following the parade, there will be a BBQ and family activities at the park.
This is the third year for the Pride events in Dauphin, and Frances Chartrand with the Northwest Metis Council says it gets bigger every year.
"When we walk and we all celebrate each other, it is incredible to see our community gather, and all of our families and friends and our allies and organizations just celebrate and support one another.  And it is growing every year, and I think it is going to be a long-standing celebration."
Chartrand thanks all of the businesses and agencies that help them put on this event, including the Dauphin Friendship Centre, Assiniboine College, West Region Treaty 2 and 4 Health, Mountainview Teachers Association, and the City of Dauphin, just to name a few.

Another incident of a batch of young animals being abandoned has once again led to a call for pet owners to spay or neuter their animals.

Some people will claim that the cost of having this procedure done is what stops them from doing it, but Parkland Humane Society officer manager Jenn Langlois says there are resources out there to help you.
""The city of Dauphin has a certified spay and neuter assistance program, called SNAP.  So you can apply to the city for that.  And the R-M of Dauphin also has a program, which you can apply for if you ive in the R-M.  And then we have our own low-income spay and neuter program."
Langlois says failing to have animals spayed or neutered often leads to larger numbers of cats or dogs being turned over to shelters, which restricts their ability to take in other animals.

The city of Dauphin is advising residents and businesses in the city's south that you may notice discoloured water today.

The city assures you that the water is safe to drink - it has been tested;  the discolouration is due to unforeseen high flow rates in the distribution system last night.

The water may remain discoloured throughout today.

Car enthusiasts will be flocking to the Jewel of the Parkland this weekend.

The 10th annual Rumble in Roblin is set for Saturday, and organizer Keith Fast is optimistic that it will be the biggest one yet.

"So this Saturday, we are going to close down Main Street in Roblin, and we are going to have one big Show and Shine.  Last year we had 158 cars line up along Main Street - all special interest - muscle cars, hot rods, modern muscle cars, and even some motorcycles, and we are going to do it again this year."

Fast says they have car clubs coming from as far away as Regina and Winnipeg to take part.
He adds the vehicles will be lined up by 4 pm on Saturday, with awards being handed out around 7 that evening.
Since the event debuted, it has grown from around 45 cars in year one to close to 160 last year.
A new benefit for those who work at Dauphin Hospital and ride their bike to work.

The Dauphin Hospital Foundation, along with additional support from the Dauphin Medical Group, has provided funding to construct a bike compound at the back of the hospital. This will benefit those riding their bike to work, knowing their property remains protected.

The foundation is well-known for equipment purchases at the hospital, personal care home, and community health services building. However, they note that supporting initiatives that can benefit staff is equally important.
Prairie Mountain Health and Dauphin Regional Health Centre thank the foundation and medical group for their generous contribution.

Three high-profile court cases returned to the docket this week.

54-year-old Marc Dorais of Ethelbert, who is accused of lighting a house in that community on fire last June while a mother and her kids were in the home, was in Dauphin court on Monday, and had his matters put over until June 24th in Dauphin.
53-year-old Cyril St Paul, who faces a charge of second-degree murder following a shooting last December in Ebb & Flow, will see his case go to a preliminary hearing next March.
And Amber Fisher, the former CAO of Gilbert Plains Municipality, also appeared in court on Tuesday and had her matters adjourned until June 24th.
She is accused of defrauding the municipality of over half a million dollars.
