Dauphin is an active, busy, and growing city, and the city wants to hear from you about the shape of its future.

Just last week, a small gathering of stakeholders gathered on 2nd Ave NW to discuss its progress led by Martijn Van Luijn, the city's economic development manager.

"We're trying to re-envision 2nd Avenue Northwest, and we've given a token of 'craft district' but that's only to start the conversation. We have a unique set of businesses on this street that fit that character."

Van Luijn notes that he wants to make this a community project, and he wants to hear from everyone interested in how this city can grow and flourish.

An urban planner was invited to this small gathering to share some ideas in the form of various boards, sketches, and pictures, all of which can be found by a visit to City Hall.

Van Luijn encourages anyone who wants to shape the evolution of this city to stop by and add to these ideas.

"Come and talk to me, my door is always open. We can share the vision boards with people. If they feel they want to be involved with the conversation, I would love that."

The province has issued a flood warning for the Assiniboine River between Shellmouth Dam and Brandon.

The recent fast snowmelt has resulted in high flows in Manitoba rivers and tributaries and could bring a risk of serious flooding to low-lying areas nearby.

Manitoba's Forecast Centre is also monitoring a precipitation system that is forecast to bring up to 40 millimeters of either rain, or both into most parts of Manitoba

Outflow from the Shellmouth dam will increase to 3000 cubic feet per second to deal with a high flow of water coming from Saskatchewan.

The current inflow to the lake is just over 6300 cubic feet per second.

The Young and Creative Minds of Dauphin will have a great opportunity to show off their skill this weekend.

Joe Houston, President of The Creative Common and host of this event invites everyone to check out the event.

"The event is going down at the Watson Art Center,  April 13th this weekend, 10 am to 4 pm. Bring your appetite, we'll be doing some hot dogs and some chips, a little bit of an eat-and-enjoy experience, and the fundraising funds go to TCC"

The Creative Common will also be represented, showing off what they are planning, and looking for public opinion.

"We're going to be also running some demos alongside, We'll have a 3D printer running, and one of our board members is going to be present with one of her laser engravers that she uses in her business. it'll be a chance to see what some of the equipment at (TCC) is going to look like, and discuss with members of the board what could be there. we're still looking for community feedback."

Updates on several court cases involving incidents in the Parkland.

A Winnipeg man charged after a 2021 traffic stop in the RM of Dauphin has had a new court date set.

33-year-old Jory Rowe will return to court in Winnipeg on April 16th.

One of two people who admitted to an armed robbery outside of a Swan River business last February was also back in court this week.

21-year-old Jefferson Cook was remanded in custody until his next appearance on April 23rd.

And a new court date has also been set for a Gilbert Plains man who was arrested following the recovery of a large amount of stolen property last October. 

25-year-old Jordy Robertson will return to Brandon Court on May 30th.

Charges have been laid after a reported carjacking in Ashern.

On April 10th at 4:40 pm, a 26-year-old male advised the RCMP that a male and two females approached him outside of his house, threatened him with a knife, and stole his keys and vehicle.

The responding officers found the stolen vehicle abandoned but were advised that the suspects were picked up by another vehicle.

The second vehicle was later found at a gas station, where the 3 suspects were arrested. The male suspect became combative, refused to comply, and a conducted energy weapon was used. A search confirmed he had a knife.

RCMP has charged Tyler Abraham, 24, of Winnipeg, with Robbery, Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, Carrying a Concealed Weapon and Failure to Comply with Release Order Conditions x2.

He was remanded into custody.

Sky McKay, 22, and Kaitlyn Pierreroy, 32, both currently residing in Ashern, were charged with Robbery and later released for court scheduled June 20, 2024, in Lundar.

Dauphin's 8th Avenue Hall will play host this weekend to gun and hobby enthusiasts from across the Parkland and throughout Manitoba. 

The 35th annual Dauphin Gun and Hobby Show takes place Saturday from 10 until 5 and from 10 until 3 on Sunday.

Guns, parts, and ammunition will be prominently on display over the two days, with the public being encouraged to bring their own antique guns to either sell, trade, or have appraised.

But for the non-gun enthusiasts, there is also expected to be a wide array of books, sports cards, coins, binoculars, knives, and other antiques and memorabilia, just to name some of the items. 

Admission is $5 per person, with children under the age of 12 admitted for free when accompanied by an adult.

A Brand new firetruck is on order for the Roblin Fire Department, from funding from the provincial government.

Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Ian Bushie announced 585 thousand dollars for a brand new pumper truck, replacing the previous 33 year old model they currently have.

Minister Bushie was excited to announce this new truck, and also the fact that it will be built within the province of Manitoba.

Acres Industries, a company in Wawanesa will be putting this brand new truck together.

The Parkland Chamber of Commerce is set to hold their State of the District event on Tuesday.

It will start at 11:45 at the Watson Arts Centre, and will be a busy event, according to Parkland CHamber executive director Stephen Chychota.

"A few years ago we wanted to create this platform where we can let the region speak for itself in a way that gets the municipalities to come together to share ideas and collaborate, and then bring in the business community all at the same time and bring in that level of networking.  But also give them that opportunity to share what is going on in their communities."

Representatives from the Municipalities of Ste Rose, Gilbert Plains, and Grandview, as well as from the RM of Dauphin, are slated to speak on Tuesday.

"The model of the State of the District is that it travels\.  Last year it was in Ste. Rose, we have held it in the past in Winnipegosis and Grandview.  So it does go all over the place because we are not just focused only on Dauphin.  But the event does come back here every other year so that it is why it is Dauphin this year."

There will also be some announccements being made by the local Tim Horton's, as well as Fusion Credit Union and Rural Manitoba Economic Development.

The provincial government has announced plans to invest $309.5 million dollars towards recruiting, retaining, and training healthcare workers in Manitoba - with a particular focus on hiring 100 new doctors within a year.

In making the announcement in Winnipeg on Thursday, Premier Wab Kinew added there would also be increases in funding for physician recruitment, and medical residency spots by 38 per cent. 

The announcement is part of a promise made in the 2024 budget to hire a total of 1,000 new healthcare workers this year.

The province says hiring physicians is one part of its strategy to improve the overall healthcare system by retaining, recruiting and training more workers with new training seats, streamlined licensing for internationally educated healthcare workers, and community recruitment.
