Tonight is your chance to hear from candidates running for Dauphin City Council.
The Dauphin and District Chamber of Commerce is holding a councillor forum at the Lion’s Den in the Rec Complex tonight at 7 pm.
Executive Director Stephen Chychota talks about why the public should come out.
“Great opportunity for the candidates to get some questions from the public and the public and the residents can hear from the candidates and get to know them a little bit better. “
“We’re taking submissions only, and we can do that now until the beginning of the forum. So if anybody wants to get their questions in before, they can. Or if they want to wait until the forum itself, when it starts, there will be some ballots out there that people can submit questions that way.

The Dauphin Fire Department is hosting a Red Cross Standard First Aid course later this month.
This is your chance to learn basic skills you can use in emergencies.
Shawn Feely, the vice president for Manitoba and Nunavut Red Cross shares what’s going on at the course.
“The course in Dauphin is a two-day standard aid course, so we’re going to be taking things like CPR, airway management, dealing with sprains, and fractures. A number of things that are common to people’s everyday life whether in the workplace or in or around the home.”
He talks about why people should learn first aid.
“A big factor with any first aid course is the idea of prevention. If you can prevent something from happening, then you don’t have to deal with it in an emergency situation.

An election forum took place at the Gilbert Plains Collegiate last night.
All three candidates for Reeve showed up, and ten out of twelve council candidates attended. The most talked about topics were water, better drainage, taxes, and garbage disposal. The candidates want to find better ways to get water to the people in Gilbert Plains while having good places to drain the water.
All candidates seemed to want to work out a way to level out taxes to make them fair for everyone. Garbage disposal was an important point; they all agreed that the garbage dump is necessary but pricey. They'd like to figure out a way to make it viable.
The election takes place on October 24th. Advance voting for Gilbert Plains will be tomorrow from 8am to 8pm at the municipal office on Main street.

The green bins in Dauphin are about to be put away for the winter.
The curbside yard-waste bi-weekly collection program is ending after this week.
It’ll start back up again in the spring.
Anyone who wants to participate in 2019 is asked to sign up for a bin on the City’s website.
New bins will be ordered over the winter and delivered in the spring, in advance of the collection program re-starting.

On Friday a blue pickup rear-ended a red truck, with the three inside, on highway 278 in Bacon Ridge.
The driver of the blue pickup wasn't at the scene when RCMP arrived.

Schools are getting ready for legal cannabis starting this Wednesday.
They plan on implementing more education around the use of cannabis and its effects on youth.
Superintendent Donna Davidson says overall not much will change in the Mountain View School Division.
“We will treat cannabis use as we do alcohol. It’s illegal, obviously, for children under the age of 19 to possess or consume cannabis. We will follow those regulations and those requirements and our student code of conduct. So where we have, in our student code of conduct, where we have rules around alcohol use we will now include wording ‘alcohol use, cannabis, and illicit drugs.’”
“We would also be providing education around the use of cannabis and the effects it has on the mind of young adults. The current physical education health curriculum has information on substance abuse and its effects. So we will continue to implement those programs. The province and government have provided additional resources for schools which we will use in our classrooms to educate students around cannabis use and it’s effects.”
There aren't a lot of 19-year-old students, so, like alcohol, it will still be illegal for the majority of students attending the school division.

Election forums are taking place tonight across the Parkland.
Gilbert Plains is holding one at the GP collegiate, and there's another one at the Elks Hall in Winnipegosis for the Mossey River Municipality.
They both start at seven tonight.
Advanced voting for elections in Gilbert Plains is taking place at the Council Chambers of the Gilbert Plains Municipal Office this Wednesday from 8 in the morning until 8 at night.
For Mossey, advanced voting takes place at fork river hall tomorrow and then at Mossey River Municipality Municipal Office in Winnipegosis on Thursday.

Those working for Loblaw in Manitoba, including No Frills, ratified a new five-year collective agreement.
It’s the largest financial improvement to the health and welfare benefit plan for workers, which includes enhancing sick time to member work in the province.
The new agreement also protects the number of full-time positions and improves wages.
“Our bargaining committee achieved real gains for themselves and their coworkers at Loblaw,” said Jeff Traeger, President of UFCW Local 832. "In an increasingly challenging industry, I'm proud of the hours and hard work that this committee has put in."
UFCW Local 832 represents over 3500 workers at Loblaw stores across Manitoba.

Ron Kostyshyn is one of three people running for Head of Council in the RM of Mossey. He explains why he’s running.
He’s running because he grew up in the area and has been a Reeve in the area before for over 20 years.
He wants to help make sure tax dollars are spent wisely and will work towards a united council that is open, fair, transparent, and accountable.
He encourages people to use their right to vote.

We finally know the penalty if caught smoking weed in public.
The provincial government says smoking or vaping cannabis in any public place will result in a 672-dollar fine.
The same goes for cannabis smoking or vaping in indoor workplaces, group living facilities and public vehicles.
Comparable fines for tobacco start at 237 dollars for a first offence.

Prairie Mountain Health has spent some time talking to other places that have legalized cannabis to prepare.
Mahmoud Khodaveisi, medical officer of health with Prairie Mountain Health thinks legalizing cannabis will lower some risks that come with illegal cannabis.
They are expecting more poison control calls as well as an increase in ER visits with legalization.
Some risks that come from consuming cannabis are slow reaction times, lower attention spans and it can make it harder to remember things.
