Whitmore School won 10 thousand dollars in the Aviva Community Fund contest.
The contest has been a big boost to their fundraising efforts for a new play structure, but they still have more to go.
“We’re really happy about it. It’s really important to our school because our current play structure is condemned. It is not up to code so it’s going to be ripped down. So the goal is to put up a new play structure and so we would need to raise about 100 thousand dollars in order to do that.”
Melissa Ferland says they have raised 75 thousand dollars for the project so far.

The next session of the 41st Manitoba legislature begins this afternoon.
Local MLA Brad Michaleski will be there as the Lieutenant Governor reads the speech from the throne.
“We’re ready for it we’ve had two years of progress; we’ve made a lot of good progress. The end of the session was last Thursday, and we accomplished a lot in the last session in terms of better legislation.”
Ceremonies beginning at 1:30 this afternoon.
“This upcoming session is going to be exciting, and we’re going to keep moving forward making Manitoba the best, most improved province in Canada.”

A 62-year-old woman from Swan River is dead after colliding with a minivan last night at the Keld Intersection, west of Dauphin.
The 62-year-old was driving eastbound when she crossed the centre line and collided with a westbound minivan, being driven by a 16-year-old male from Ashville.
The female driver was pronounced deceased at the scene and the 16-year-old male was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
Officers believe both drivers were wearing their seatbelts and that alcohol was not a factor in the collision.
Police continue to investigate.

Hopes for an end to postal service disruptions have been dashed again, with striking workers rejecting a call from Canada Post for a ``cooling off'' period accompanied by mediated talks.
Earlier today the Crown corporation said it would agree to a request from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers for another round of mediation, but only if striking workers end their rotating walkouts.
This move was aimed at getting union members to put down their picket signs over the holidays.
In a statement, CUP-W national president Mike Palecek says the proposal asks members to go back to work at the heaviest and most stressful time of year under conditions that effectively have some employees working without compensation.

The construction of Dairy Queen is coming along.
The outer shell has been pretty much completed and there has been a minor problem with the paving, due to the weather.
The interior set up will be starting right away.
Eric Rochefort, Dairy Queen Franchise Developer for Eastern and Northern Canada says the goal is to still be open sometime in February.

Groups around Dauphin are encouraged to enter a float for this weekend’s Knights of Columbus Christmas Parade of Light
“We’ve had as high as, I think, 56 entries. That’s a pretty good parade for Dauphin. This year we’re down in numbers. I was talking to Ernie the other day, and he said that we were down quite a ways.”
Lloyd Hudson reminds groups that you want to join in, registration is open until the parade gets going at 5:30 on Saturday.
“Just a gentle reminder to people that it is a community activity that brings the spirit to town.”
Hudson is encouraging everyone to come out for the evening where Santa will be there.
“We’re having the tree lighting ceremony the same night."

There was an accident around the Keld intersection on Highway Five, west of Dauphin. Uncomfirmed reports say that one person has died as a result of the accident.
We have reached out to the RCMP for details.

Steinbach RCMP have found the missing 17 year old, Heather Flett.
Flett was located safe and sound.
She had been missing since October 24th.
The RCMP thanks the public and media for their assistance.

Today is the best time to donate to the Dauphin and District Community Foundation.
Today is the 24-hour Giving Challenge.
"It is an opportunity for their donations to the Dauphin and District Community Foundation stretched. For every five dollars donated the Winnipeg Foundation will donate one dollar, and the Province of Manitoba will donate one dollar. So, a five dollar gift becomes seven dollars. We can receive a maximum of two thousand each in stretch from the Winnipeg Foundation and the province. So that's potentially an extra four thousand dollars."

She explains where the money raised today is going.
“It goes into our Undesignated or Unrestricted fund. Which means the board will interview each applicant and get information on the project that they are applying for a grant for. And then the board will meet to discuss all the projects and who will benefit and what is the lasting legacy of the project and decide what we can support and with how much money.”
Last year the challenge raised $34,730 for Dauphin. Since 1996 the foundation has granted out one million dollars.

Barry Trotz is giving back to the community today.
His family went to different groups around Dauphin this afternoon giving out money raised during the Stanley cup day celebrations.
His parents went to Whitmore School, the Dauphin Hospital, the Senior Centre and presented a cheque to the Dauphin Community Fund.
"He really has done a wonderful job, and he never forgets his home routes. We're very proud of what he's accomplished," his mom said.
"I'm very proud of my son and the people that helped," his dad said.
15,640 dollars were donated to fund the Lifeline program at the senior centre, and 31,260 was given to create a fund in Barry Trotz’s name for the Dauphin and District Community Foundation.
Whitmore School received a donation from the money raised on Barry Trotz Day. They received 15 690 dollars.
Lesia Jensen is very thankful for the donation.
“It will be used for our new play structure which we are currently fundraising for.”
The Dauphin Regional Health Centre got 17, 650 dollars for their palliative care redevelopment project. The director of the Dauphin Regional Health Centre, Curt Gullett, says the donation is huge.
“What this is going to mean is it’s going to allow us to complete phase one and a portion of the funds will be transferred over to phase 2”
The donation is huge for the project. It will help them buy TVs for the rooms and other items to make the rooms more comfortable.
There will be more donations coming in the future.

Members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers continue to be on strike in Dauphin and other cities across the province.
There is no end to the overall rolling strikes in sight, although employees in Dauphin could return to work on Monday unless told otherwise.
Job security, pay equity, and unpaid hours of work are some of the issues surrounding the collective bargaining negotiations.
