With only five percent of people working in the trades sector being women, First Peoples Developent Inc. is hoping to bump that number up significantly.
They have opened a LauncHer Into Trades Program, which aims to promote the retention of all women in Red Seal Trades in Manitoba, while also assisting women in achieving employment in a Red Seal trade career.
Barb Moran is the program manager, and says there are some qualifications that have to be met by potential participants in the program.
"The individual must be working. so they have to have an employer for us to assist them with say PPE, boots, safety glasses, or anything like that."
Barb recognizes that there are a lot of challenges in the trades, especially for women. She also says that since five percent of the current trades labor force in Canada is made up of women, this leads to a largely untapped demographic for the trades.
"you know, we want to educate the females to increase women in the field first of all, and also recognize the employer as champions hiring the women as their taking on apprentices."
A total of 30 trades are eligible for assistance with the LauncHer program.

A 14-year-old is facing several charges after being taken into custody on Wednesday in Dauphin.
Just before midnight on Wednesday, Dauphin RCMP located an intoxicated 14-year-old male walking down Main Street North and he was taken into custody for his safety.
Officers found the youth to be in possession of an air pistol that resembled a restricted handgun.
As a result, he is being charged with consuming alcohol as a minor and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He has been released with a future court date.
The Dauphin RCMP are concerned with the number of realistic-looking firearms that are being seized.
While they are legal to possess, firearms charges can follow if brandished as a firearm. Officers are unable to tell if these realistic-looking weapons are real firearms or not and they will be treated as such until proven otherwise.

The closures include the Pernarowski Bridge on Road 144 North between Roads 122 and 123 West, the Zadorozny Bridge on Road 122 West between Highway 10 and Road 150 North, and the Nykiforuk Bridge on Road 154 North between Roads 120 and 121 West.
The Municipality says it is working with engineers to determine the amount of damage, as well as getting an estimated length of bridge closures in order to repair them.
They say until these assessments are complete, no traffic will be allowed on any of these bridges.

Activity will pick up at the Selo Ukraina site beginning tomorrow when the gates for Dauphin's Countryfest open at 10 am.
This is the 35th anniversary of the festival, which is opening its gates a day later this year due to there being no performances on Thursday night.
Countryfest Board chair Duane McMaster says it should be a seamless entry to the grounds for festival goers.
"If they placed their order far enough in advance that they already have their wristbands in the mail, then entry into the site will be really easy. Ever since we went to the RFID system a few years back, the gates go really quickly. It used to be that you had to sit in line for three, four, or five hours to get into the site. Now we get everyone in really good and quick there."
There are sure to be some people arriving early with hopes of being the first ones to access their campsite.
However, McMaster is not anticipating as big of a lineup as in some past years.
"It used to be with us not opening until 2 pm, people would start lining up early. But the Province of Manitoba has stated that you are not allowed to park on the highway shoulder overnight. So, I do not anticipate the lineup being really horrible because you are not allowed to actually line up on the highway. You can line up in our driveway, but once the driveway is full, you can not park on the highway overnight. You have to go back into town and drive back out in the morning."
Day one of performances is Friday.

The Crown Prosecution office in Manitoba has decided that no charges will be laid in relation to last year's fatal bus crash near Carberry.
Speaking at a news conference that was live-streamed by CBC, Crown Attorney Chris Vanderhooft said while the bus carrying 24 seniors from the Dauphin area did proceed into the intersection when it was unsafe to do so, there were three blindspots on the bus that would have made it difficult for the driver to see the oncoming eastbound semi-truck.
Vanderhooft, along with RCMP officials, both stated that they have been unable to speak with the bus driver due to severe head and brain injuries that he suffered as a result of the crash.
They add that they do not anticipate being able to speak to him in the future.
Today's announcement wraps up an investigation launched by RCMp - specifically their Major Crimes Unit - which began shortly after the June 15th accident near Carberry that killed 17 people and injured eight others.
RCMP and Crown Prosecutor officials were in Dauphin on Tuesday to meet with family members of those on the bus that day to provide them with an update on the investigation.

After 18 years as an Animal Control Officer, Todd Tarrant no longer holds the position.
As of July 1, the City of Dauphin announced that Barkland in the Parkland Pet Resort & Crematorium will take on the role of the City's Animal Services team. Dave McInnes, who owns Barkland alongside his wife, is eager to take on the role alongside their great team.
"In all honesty, there are so many animals that are being mistreated throughout the region," said McInnes. "With the team that we have here, we hope that we can help provide some education, direction, and some structure so that people are more comfortable in owning a domestic pet and providing adequate care for them."
As a part of their new role, there will also be a new Animal Retention Centre (ARC) opening at Barkland. This will replace the former City Pound and will provide dogs and cats that are lost or found with care and a comfortable place while they wait to be reunited with their people.
"We want to have a safe space for the pets that are lost or confused, we have that safe space for them," offered McInnes.
Dave and his crew also recently celebrated a milestone. One year and three days ago, they welcomed their first guest into the facility. While David admits there has been a learning curve, he has loved every second of owning Barkland in the Parkland Pet Resort & Crematorium.
"There is a lot to learn when you're providing care for that many animals, it's about keeping them safe, and us as well," ended McInnes. "We have been very blessed. Our team members are so knowledgeable, they're so caring. We have met so many amazing animals and their humans as well."
In closing, the City of Dauphin wanted to thank Mr. Tarrant for all of his hard work and dedication over the years.
"We extend our gratitude to Todd Tarrant for his 18 years of service as our Animal Control Officer and wish him the best in the next chapter of his career," said the City of Dauphin. "He has touched the lives of countless animals in our community and made friends with many pet owners along the way."
