Today is the 20th anniversary of the deadliest terror attacks on U.S. soil.
Premier Kelvin Goertzen made a statement on the commemoration.
“Today, we mark the 20th anniversary of the tragic and horrific events that took place in the United States on September 11, 2001, the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil in U.S. history.”
Manitoba's 23rd Premier carried on to talk about his plans for the day,
“This morning, I am pleased to join representatives from both The United States and Canada at a ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial Site at the International Peace Gardens to honour the lives tragically lost, commemorate our long-standing positive relationship between our nations, and reaffirm our commitment of international cooperation and peace.”
Premier Goertzen offered his sympathies,
“On behalf of all Members of the Manitoba Legislature and all Manitobans, I offer my sincere condolences to those who lost loved ones, those who survived and still struggle, and those whose lives have been forever changed.”
Goertzen says the day is one to honour the bravery, sacrifice and heroism of first responders and military personal then and today, and the compassion of everyday people to help their neighbour in times of great need.
Nearly 3,000 lives were lost, including 24 Canadians in the attacks.

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress is trying to encourage Ukrainians in the community to get vaccinated, by holding a virtual town hall.
Irka Mendela, Liaison for the Ukrainian Canadian Congress says they’re being supported by the province to try to reach out to some senior citizens, and younger families who are reluctant to get the vaccine.
“Who will be present is an epidemiologist of Ukrainian descent, several family physicians of Ukrainian descent - possibly one even who will speak from Ukraine, and Clergy from Ukrainian Catholic churches.”
Irka says that a myth the congress has heard is that women can become sterile from the vaccine.
“That’s where the family physicians would come in, and explain how this wouldn’t happen and can’t happen, based on science.”
The town Hall is taking place on Sunday, September 19th at 2:00 p.m.

The RCMP has arrested two men after the seizure of firearms and drugs following a traffic stop in Fisher River Cree Nation.
Officers pulled over a suspicious car travelling south on Highway 224.
RCMP then seized a sawed-off shotgun, a loaded 9mm handgun and prepackaged individual baggies of a substance believed to be cocaine.
Jordan Govereau, 19, from Fisher River Cree Nation, was arrested and charged with multiple offences, including careless use of a firearm x2, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose x2, and possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine.
Govereau was also issued a ticket under the Highway Traffic Act for driving without a valid driver’s licence.
He was released and is scheduled to appear in court on October 5th in Peguis First Nation.
Jerome Moore, 20, from Fisher River Cree Nation, was arrested and charged with numerous offences, including careless use of a firearm x2, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose x2, and possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine.
He remains in custody.
The RCMP continues to investigate.

This morning, Dauphin’s Mental Wellness and Suicide Prevention Committee hosted a community walk for World Suicide Prevention Day.
Committee member, Eleanor Snitka says that of all the events they have done, a walk was the right choice for this year:
"We've done different activities over the years, but I think I really like the idea for a walk for this year."
Everyone who came to the event received an orange ribbon, information cards about self-care and mental health, as well as a candle:
"Everyone across the world is encouraged to light a candle in their window tonight at eight o'clock to remember somebody or in honour of somebody who's struggling or who has lost someone."
The walk concluded with hot dogs provided by the Dauphin HERO Club at the United Church.

Shelly Glover, who’s running to become Manitoba’s next premier, says she doesn't support mandatory vaccines.
Glover stated that she wouldn’t want to see nurses and other healthcare workers fired for not getting the vaccine.
She says she wants people to follow current public health orders, including vaccine requirements to attend cinemas and sporting events.
However, she adds that if she becomes premier, she would talk to health leaders about why Manitoba's rules are different than in other provinces.
She made these statements when she launched her campaign for leadership Friday.

On September 8, 2021, a Search Warrant was executed at a residence in Brandon, which resulted in the seizure of approximately 2 ounces of Fentanyl, 23 ounces of marijuana, $6000 cash, two canisters of bear mace, a 12 gauge double-barreled shotgun, replica handgun and other drug paraphernalia. The street value of seized drugs is approximately $9000.
Four individuals have been arrested following this investigation.
A 23-year-old female, a 23-year-old male, a 25-year-old male, and a 49-year-old male were arrested on multiple drug possession and trafficking charges.
The 23-year-old female, 23-year-old male, and 25-year-old male all appeared in Brandon court yesterday. Meanwhile, the 49-year-old male is set to appear in court later today.

Eric Wildman has been charged with First Degree Murder in the death of 40-year-old Clifford Joseph.
Wildman had been arrested in Belleville in June.
He was a suspect in the sudden disappearance and death of his neighbour Clifford Joseph.
On Thursday officers formally arrested Wildman who is in custody on previous charges.
Wildman will appear in court in Winnipeg Friday.
He remains in custody.

Advance polling begins today and goes until September 13th.
Proof of vaccination isn’t required for voting, but masks are mandatory at polling stations across the province.
All poll workers, candidates, and representatives will be wearing masks at all times at polling locations.
Marie-France Kenny, Regional Media Advisor for Elections Canada says voters who can’t wear a mask should apply by mail, which can be done until Tuesday, September 14th at 6:00 p.m.
Election Day is on September 20th.

Dauphins Tim Hortons will be hosting their annual smile cookie campaign next week from September 13th to the 19th.
All proceeds raised from cookie sales will go back towards community initiatives with the Dauphin Friendship Centre and the Parkland Humane Society.
Both organizations are asking the community for help to execute this week as they look for more volunteers.
Kelsey Bates of the Humane Society goes through what volunteers will be tasked with,
"We are looking for volunteers to do stuff like decorates cookies, greet people at the doors; and we are going to have some people walk dogs around the restaurant as well."
The Human Society will use the proceeds from this fundraiser towards their spay and neuter program.
While Gail Welburn, resource development coordinator for the friendship centre, talks about what volunteers can expect to do for the week,
"Decorating cookies, encouraging cookie sales with the folks at the drive-through, just a lot of fun different little jobs ."
Gail says that the food for thought program would be receiving donations from this campaign.
In conjunction with the week of cookie sales, a garage sale will be taking place at Tim Hortons on Saturday the 18th from 10 am - 1 pm.

Brandon's Flight Centre will be hosting the grand opening of the Dauphin Flight training program this Saturday at the Dauphin airport from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a barbecue, a silent auction, and flights around the city as the Flight Centre introduces itself to the community.
CEO of the company David Creighton explains what the Centre hopes comes out of the opening and why they came to Dauphin,
"It's just a really good opportunity for folks to come out and witness what goes on at the airport. Get an idea if they have been thinking about flying or even kind of just want to know a little more about it, it'll be a great opportunity for that. The Dauphin Flying club has been trying to reinvent itself for a while; with everything like this going on as well, it will be a really opportunity for them to kind of get some new energy going in their club."
Jillian Borreson, Student Services Coordinator, touched on the day and where the proceeds from the event will go.
"There will be sightseeing rides available with a min donation of $20, with all proceeds going towards a scholarship fund for the Dauphin and area students. "
The flight training program began in Dauphin on August 6th, and this event will officially assert the program's presence in the city.

Winnipeg City Councillor Markus Chambers has been named as the city's newest Deputy Mayor.
This comes after Vivan Santos' removal from the position after previously refusing to disclose her vaccination status.
Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman says he respects Santos’ right to keep her health information private, but he has been forced to remove her from the role.
Santos was noted as being the only Winnipeg Councillor not vaccinated earlier this year.
Mayor Bowman mentioned that City managers are working on a possible vaccine mandate for staff.
