The Dauphin Clippers varsity boys volleyball season is here.
The team will travel to Winnipeg to take part in the 16th Annual Linden Christian Invitational.
"We're really looking forward to just playing some games," said Taylor Schmidt, Head Coach. "I like to think we've had a pretty good pre-season so far. We haven't played but we've had some pretty productive practices to prepare for this."
After several rookies made up the team last season, this year's squad will be a much more experienced and confident group.
"We have a lot of returning players after last season," added Schmidt. "We're an experienced team with a lot of great athletes. We're pretty confident in our abilities heading into the season for sure."
The Clippers round-robin schedule will be a busy one. Starting at 2:40 tomorrow, the team will play four games before Saturday's playoffs.
"The grade 12 players are really chomping at the bit to get in there and get it going," said Schmidt. "Some of our rookies are a little nervous but also excited to see the speed of it. Everyone's going to see the floor here this weekend. We're going to grow as a team for sure, and it's a good chance to see what AAA volleyball looks like for everyone on our team."
The Clippers full schedule is as followed:
2:40 p.m. - vs Linden Christian.
4:20 p.m. - vs Shaftesbury.
6:50 p.m. - vs Louis Riel.
8:30 p.m. - vs Sanford.

Ten people are running for City Council in Dauphin. The election for city council and school board trustees will take place on October 24th at the Dauphin Friendship Centre Auditorium. When voting for city council you can vote for six or fewer people. Voting for seven or more people causes the ballot to be declined. The order on the City Council Ballot will be:

She's from Dauphin and she's about to get hooked up with a brand new furnace.
Norma Parks is the winner of the Feel the Love contest that was put on by Steiner Plumbing & Heating.
"We had six people nominated from in and around Dauphin," said Carla Wolfenden, Owner at Steiner Plumbing & Heating. "All were deserving but we had to narrow it down to a couple finalists and of the two people's homes we visited, she was definitely in need of a new furnace"
"She told us it gets pretty cool in her home during the winter because her current system isn't great," she added. "She's just a caring, sweetheart of a lady. We're thrilled for her."
With the new furnace, Norma won't have to worry about getting chilly in her own home during the winter months.
"It's extremely exciting to win this," said Parks. "I was definitely surprised that I won. I was just delighted to be a recipient of this wonderful gift. I'm so happy."
"I'm very humbled that someone cared enough and thought about me to nominate me," she added. "Even if I didn't win, it was just a good feeling to get nominated in the first place."
This was the first year that Steiner Plumbing & Heating ran this contest. And, they plan on making it happen again.
"It was really successful," said Wolfenden. "Being our first year we weren't really sure what to expect. We know Dauphin is a very supportive community, but six nominations were definitely beyond our expectations."
"We're definitely going to consider running this contest again next year," she added. "This was great because it's really going to make a difference for the winner and in this case Norma."
Norma also wanted to say thank you to Steiner Plumbing & Heating.
"It's such a kind and generous thing for them to offer to the community," said Parks. "No matter who won, it's a huge gift. I just want to say thank you to them for donating their time to installing it and just giving the community a chance to win it."
Norma's new furnace will be installed on October 6.

A man from Pine River made a couple of generous donations in Dauphin earlier this week.
Anthony Semeniuk donated twenty-thousand dollars to the Dauphin Hospital Foundation. He also donated ten-thousand dollars to the Dauphin Multi-Purpose Senior Center.
Semeniuk says he's very happy to support organizations that support many healthcare projects and initiatives within the parkland.

Today is the fourth day of the Tim Horton’s Smile Cookie Campaign. The campaign has started off well.
On the first day, Tim Horton’s sold over 500 cookies, which is more than any other first day of the smile cookie campaign in Dauphin.
Smile Cookie Campaign is on at Tim Horton’s until Sunday.
You can buy cookies by placing an order by phoning 638 3299, walking in and buying one cookie or a dozen in a box, or even just going through the drive-through.
For every cookie purchased 1 dollar is donated to the Whitmore School Playground Fund.

At the site of the fatal derailed train accident was a washout.
The Transportation Safety Board will continue to investigate the situation because they cannot definitively say the accident happened as a result of the washout.
RCMP say a 38-year-old, who died, and a 59-year-old were trapped in the locomotive of a freight train for several hours after it derailed.
The man who died was the train conductor and the other employee was an engineer.

The burn ban in the RM of Mossey has been lifted.
The ban had been in place since August 24th.

Mayor Dowhan has been elected by acclamation and will remain mayor for the next four years.
The election date for the remaining six city council positions is set for October 24th.
The names of those running for city council will be revealed tomorrow at 1 pm.

Cannabis will be legalized on October 17th.
The legal age to purchase and consume marijuana in Manitoba is 19, and you can expect to show a valid ID if you want to purchase it.
Any marijuana product purchased must be from an LGCA licensed retailer.
Cannabis cannot be homegrown, sold without authorization or bought for a minor. Fines can be as high as 2,542 dollars.
Marijuana can only be consumed in a private place, smoking in a provincial park or campsite will result in a 672 dollar fine. If driving in a vehicle, cannabis cannot be accessible by anyone in the vehicle.
There aren't any confirmed locations in Dauphin that will sell Marijuana.

At the start of the month, Tom Teichroeb became the president of the Manitoba Beef Producers.
Only a couple weeks into his presidency, Teichroeb has identified this year’s dry weather as being one problem for the members. As well, a long-term goal of his is getting more youth involved in the industry.
After Ben Fox stepped down as President, Teichroeb became the interim president before he got the interim tag removed.
Manitoba Beef Producers are the voice of beef producers, and they go out and speak on behalf of beef producers in Manitoba.
He is quite experienced having been a second vice and vice president with the Manitoba Beef Producers during the past 5 years.
