The City of Dauphin is preparing for a community open house on Wednesday evening.

The purpose of the open house is to review the city's zoning bylaw. The open house will be from 5 to 7 at City Hall, located at 100 Main Street in Dauphin.

CKDM News caught up with City Manager, Sharla Griffiths.

"Our current zoning bylaw was created and has been in effect since 2015," she said. "It's good practice to update it every seven or 10 years, so it's time. Part of the community open house is to show some of the differences or new things that we want to put into the zoning bylaw and get some feedback from the public."

It will be a drop-in event; come and go. There will be no formal presentation. Dauphin has several different zones. They include residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural, and institutional.

"We are looking at augmenting some of those zones or giving them some new names that better describe what they are for our community," added Griffiths.

One change that Sharla spoke about on Monday was the ability to build smaller structures as single-family dwellings.

"There has been a lot of talk in the last decade about tiny homes," she said.

If you aren't able to attend on Wednesday evening, the City of Dauphin has you covered.

"Certainly. Starting June 11 on the City of Dauphin's website, there will be a form or survey," Griffiths continued. "People can take a look at some information and provide feedback."

Whether in-person or virtually, Sharla reiterated that the city wants plenty of engagement from the public.

"Some of the best ideas we get are from the public. It's those that live, work, and play in Dauphin every day," ended Griffiths. "If we can hear some feedback or ideas, we would love to take them under consideration."

If you plan to look at the changes and provide feedback virtually, head to the City of Dauphin

The search for a Chief Administrative Officer continues for the Rural Municipality of Dauphin.

The RM had an agreement in principle with a candidate. However, that candidate has withdrawn their application to pursue other opportunities. While an unfortunate circumstance, Ernie Sirski, Reeve, is confident the RM will find someone to fill the position.

"It's not the first time I've been involved in this type of hiring process, not necessarily with the RM, but with other organizations," said Sirski. "Sometimes it takes a while to get the right person in place. We will get there."

In an ideal world, Sirski hopes that any future candidate will have some municipal experience.

"And if not, we will take the time to train the right individual," added Sirski. "With that said, it would be nice to find someone with experience in municipal affairs."

Assistant CAO Tyral Solski has taken over the position on an interim basis. Ernie wants to thank her for all of her contributions and hard work.

"I have to give her a lot of credit. She is a real trooper and she's keeping things going," ended Sirski. "One of her daughters is graduating, and she has been very busy with volleyball. Tyral is a very busy young lady, but she's been holding things together. I have to compliment her and give her a lot of credit."

If you are interested in the position, you can visit the RM office at PO Box 574, Highway 20A, East Dauphin. You can also call 638-4531.

A very difficult decision has been made by the Hospitality and Event Management class at Assiniboine College's Parkland Campus.

Instructor Yvonne Rempel says her students have decided to cancel the "Table for 100" event planned for next Saturday evening.

She says the response they received from the community for the event was incredible.

"The community really rallied for the event. A Glamorous Night was something that we were really looking forward to.  But as a class, we decided to change our efforts and support the evacuees of the wildfires that are happening in Manitoba."

The students partnered with the Dauphin Friendship Centre, Dauphin Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation, and Assiniboine College to hold a fundraising barbecue on Friday, with proceeds going to the evacuees so they can enjoy activities such as going swimming at the Kin Aquatic Centre or to a movie at Countryfest Community Cinema, while they are staying in our city.

Mental health, diabetes, community building, and sports are all topics that Kaleb Dahlgren will touch upon during a special fundraising event on Monday night.

A survivor of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in 2018, Dahlgren is working towards becoming a chiropractor, while also being a spokesperson for several diabetes groups and holding speaking engagements across the country.

This will be the first time that Dahlgren has visited Dauphin, and he is super-pumped about it.

"For the children, we are helping raise funds for them.  For me, if I were in their shoes and had an opportunity to go to Europe and experience what it is like to play rugby in the UK, that would be so cool!  So, for me, I am really excited to help raise some money for those children, too."

"An Evening with Kaleb Dahlgren" will begin at 7:30 p.m. Monday night at the 8th Avenue hall.

Tickets are still available through either Dauphin Chiropractic Centre or Nutters.

Dauphin Rec Services is calling all bike enthusiasts.

Bike Week begins on Monday in the City of Sunshine. It runs from June 9 to 15.

Tamara Kolida is the programs and promotions coordinator with Dauphin Rec Services.

"We want to encourage people to get on their bikes," said Kolida. "Bike to school, bike to work. We have a very short summer season, so we want to encourage people to get outside on their bikes and enjoy while they can."

Some sweet prizes will be up for grabs. So when biking around the city next week, post a photo on their Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Make sure you tag it #dauphinbikeweek. That will put you into the draw for daily prizes.

"Each day, we're going to encourage you to do different things," ended Kolida. "Including biking to work, biking to school, and biking to the playground with your family. We want to see some selfies of you on your bike. We'll encourage people to hit trails, whether it's Meadowlark Park, Northgate Trails, or through Vermillion."

It's also important for those driving around town next week to be extra careful. Many kids will be biking around town, so be extra cautious when you're out and about.

4-H members across the province will be out collecting garbage along Manitoba highways and roadways on Saturday.

The annual 4-H Manitoba Highway clean-up event is a community service event that improves the environment.

All 4-H participants will be wearing a safety vest, and areas being cleaned will be marked with safety signs.

Motorists are reminded to be aware of the added foot traffic alongside highways and roads, slow down, and keep a safe distance between their vehicles and any traffic barriers, trucks, equipment, and volunteers.

In case of rain, the alternate date for the cleanup campaign is June 14.

The issue of Parks Canada changing course and once again banning motorized boats on Clear Lake this summer was recently a topic of discussion in the House of Commons.

Riding Mountain M-P Dan Mazier has asked Canadian Identity and Culture Minister Stephen Guilbault to remove the Superintendent of Riding Mountain National Park and to hold a public meeting on the issue.

After confirming earlier in May that the park would institute a one boat, one lake policy for motorized watercraft, Parks Canada announced they were reversing that decision just hours before the start of the May long weekend.

Mazier says the decision is going to be damaging for businesses in Wasagaming.

"Some of the businesses there already had staff ready to go, food orders and bookings in place for this summer, and there was no warning with this (change).  The businesses that make a living on the lake it is going to have severe impacts on them, and it makes zero sense."

Mazier says cottage owners on Clear Lake are also going to be heavily impacted.

He adds he spoke to a realtor in the area, who told him that many showings for cottages were cancelled once the announcement came from Parks Canada.

Ste.. Rose du Lac RCMP have made an arrest after attending a gun call.

Thursday morning at around 2:45 am, Ste. Rose du Lac RCMP received a report of a person pointing a firearm inside a residence on 4th Avenue in McCreary.

Upon attending, officers were advised by the homeowner that the suspect, a female and known to them, had assaulted the homeowner and her two children inside the home and threatened them with a firearm.

Ste. Rose du Lac RCMP, along with Manitoba RCMP Police Dog Services, and Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) began searching for the suspect.

Officers quickly located the suspect outside a residence on Broderick Street by using the drone, however, the firearm was not located.

Officers and Police Dog Services Marook were able to safely arrest the suspect without incident.
There were no serious physical injuries to anyone inside the residence.

38-year-old Lacey Campbell, of McCreary, has been remanded until a court appearance and charged with the following:

Ste. Rose du Lac RCMP continue to investigate.

Manitobans are being encouraged to get out this weekend and try out one of the summer's most popular pastimes.

This is family fishing weekend, which means you can fish any of the province's lakes without needing a fishing licence.

The only exception is Riding Mountain National Park, where you need a federal angling licence to fish.

Catch limits and other regulations remain in effect.

You are encouraged to check out Manitoba's Angling Guide for 2025 before you head out.

Also, a reminder that backcountry travel restrictions and fire bans remain in place for many parts of the province

An investigation is underway after the Swan Valley Fire Department responded to a single-vehicle collision on Friday morning.

At 5:15, crews were on the scene at 4th Ave N where a truck crashed into a hydro pole. When crews arrived, no one was in the vehicle, and despite search efforts, no one was found nearby.

The crew disconnected the battery and handed the scene over to the Swan River RCMP. The hydro pole was damaged in the crash.

The celebration is on in Oakburn this weekend.

Kim Manuliak and her dedicated crew have been preparing for months, and the wait is almost over. That community will be celebrating Manitoba's 155th birthday on Saturday.

"We'll start with a pancake breakfast at the community hall from 8 to 9:30, then we'll have a parade starting at 10," said Manuliak. "Afterward, you can head to the rink grounds where everything will occur. There are bouncy castles, a rock climbing wall, and we're having a lawn mower obstacle course challenge."

There will also be entertainment, food trucks, and beer gardens on site. There will also be a Manitoba-made market with dozens of Manitoba-based vendors. There is a petting zoo from 12 to 6 and an old-time dance at the community hall from 2 to 5.

Come dusk, fireworks will light up the sky, and there's also a social. Kim says they were planning on hosting a big event in 2019, however, it was cancelled because of the pandemic. So this weekend's event is six years in the making.

"We're very excited. It's been a tiring week, but we're getting everything set to go," ended Manuliak. "It's been a long time coming. It'll be a great time for our community and everyone to get together."
