The Sunrise Credit Union 2020 Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held online via Zoom software on Tuesday, May 26 at 5:15 p.m.
President and CEO Tim Klassen is encouraging members to pre-register for the AGM, so they’llbe able to vote.
“We’re asking folks to preregister for the meeting so we know who’s going to be in attendance. It is for members only. Others can listen in, but in order to vote, we need to verify that they’re members. So we know who we can send the voting instructions to.”

Members have until 4 p.m. on Monday, May 25 to register.
Members will vote on the approval of the financial statements, the reappointment of the auditors for the credit union, and any other motions that might come before the meeting.
The Sunrise CEO says the AGM will help address the business side of things, and enable the Credit Union to look ahead to the future.
“It’s going to be an interesting year ahead. 2019 was a very good year for Sunrise Credit Union. I expect once we’re through this situation we’re in now, we’ll come out the other side better for it as well.”

Several fires forced community members to evacuate their homes Sunday in the Pine Creek and Pulp River area.
The fires started around 12:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon. The main fire was in the Pulp River area, and the second fire was on Pine Creek Reserve.
Four water bombers were on the scene within one hour of getting called.
Early reports are that 1 home and 3 sheds were burnt severely in Pine Creek. There has been no word on any injuries.

The death of a 35-year-old man from Vogar is being investigated by Ashern RCMP.
On Friday, May 15 around 11:00 p.m., Ashern RCMP were called to a home in the Rural Municipality of West Interlake for a report of an assault.
The victim was found fatally injured and pronounced deceased at the scene.
24-year-old Zachary Desjarlais of Vogar is charged with Manslaughter and will appear in Winnipeg Provincial Court on Tuesday, May 19, 2020.

The Snowbirds have announced there was one fatality in the crash in Kamloops.
An individual also has serious injuries as a result.

Today a Canadian Forces Snowbirds jet crashed in Kamloops during the BC stop of their Canada wide tour.
Emergency crews from the Kamloops airport have responded.
The plane reportedly crashed near a house, while a pilot landed on a nearby roof.
No fatalities have been reported by officials.
This morning, the snowbirds tweeted that due to weather conditions, they wouldn't be flying through some of the mountain passes.

As of 9 a.m. on Sunday, Manitoba public health officials identified no new cases of COVID-19.
This is now the sixth straight day where no new cases have been announced in the province.
There are 25 active cases, and a total of 7 deaths associated with COVID-19 in Manitoba
The Prairie Mountain Health region has had a total of 26 confirmed cases.

Victoria Day long weekend celebrations might look a bit different this year, but safety should still remain a priority.
That’s the message to Manitobans from the Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society (STARS).
Chad Saxon with STARS Manitoba says the air rescue unit tends to see an increase in calls on long weekends — particularly on the Victoria Day long weekend.
“We just want to remind people to keep safety at the forefront of what they do”.
In 2019, STARS Manitoba crews flew 17 missions from May 17-20, an average of more than four per day.
Chad says many of those calls were related to ATV’s and motor vehicle accidents.
“We’ve seen a significant increase in ATV accidents over the last 1 to 2 years”, and says last year was particularly bad — with around 30 incidents involving ATV’s.
STARS is calling on people to wear a helmet, and observe speed limits on trails, especially if on unfamiliar trails.

It could be an entirely new reality for Manitoba's elementary and high schools in the fall — if schools are able to open at all.
That was the message today from Manitoba School Boards Association (MSBA) president Alan Campbell.
Campbell says there’s still a great deal of uncertainty around COVID-19, and what the situation may look like in September.
Mountain View School Division (MVSD) superintendent Dan Ward says there’s hope and optimism that classes will resume in the Fall — but says it’s very difficult to plan ahead right now.
“It might be later in the summer before we actually know what the province will decree in terms of return to classes — and what the restrictions will be.”
The issue of rural internet connectivity has been in the spotlight even more since the suspension of classes. The MVSD superintendent acknowledges many students live in rural areas where connectivity is an issue.
To address the problem, the Division has explored making Wi-Fi hotspots available, where families can get internet access from outside the school building. Ward says some high school students can also apply to loan a device if required.
The MVSD is still going to provide paper materials to students when needed.
“It’s not a perfect approach, but it is working for the vast majority of families.”
Going forward, Ward encourages students and families can go to the MVSD website for updates.
The MVSD will also continue sending out information directly to families.
“If there are any questions, can call the division office, we’re still open. Schools are still open to take calls and provide information.”

The Manitoba government has made the decision to extend the province-wide state of emergency to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
Effective 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, the state of emergency will be extended for a period of 30 days.
A state of emergency endows the government with powers to take quick action to limit the spread of the virus.
The state of emergency was initially declared by public health officials on March 20th, and extended again on April 20th.

For the third day in a row, Manitoba public health officials have identified no new cases of COVID-19 in the province.
The total number of confirmed and probable cases remains at 289.
Just three people are currently hospitalized, with one individual in intensive care. There are 28 active cases and 254 individuals considered recovered.
The number of deaths due to COVID-19 remains at seven.
Heading into the May Long Weekend, public health officials are reminding Manitobans there continues to be significant work needed to limit the spread of COVID-19.
Public health is also advising people stay close to home. This includes limiting travel, even within Manitoba and neighbouring jurisdictions.

At around 1:00 p.m. on Friday, emergency crews were called to the scene of a multi-vehicle accident at the intersection of Main & Whitmore.
A truck ran into the back of a car that slid across the intersection.
The initial report is that a woman was injured, but the extent of those injuries is unknown at this time.
Emergency crews have cleared the scene, and the area has reopened to regular traffic.
