Dr. David Barber, one of Canada's most influential and accomplished Arctic researchers passed away on Friday, following complications with cardiac arrest. Dr. Barber was originally from Dauphin and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2016.

Dr. Barber was best known for his groundbreaking work on snow over sea ice and the application of satellite technologies for their characterization. He will be honored with a celebration of life at the Engineering Atrium at the University of Manitoba on April 23rd.

The Long Plain First Nation, south of Portage La Prairie, elected its new chief on Thursday in the community's general election.

35-year-old Kyra Wilson received the most votes in the election and will become only the second female chief for the First Nation and it's first since the 1970s when Marlene Peters held the position.

Wilson said she is honored and overwhelmed by the support from her community and she looks forward to meeting with the council and connecting with the residents of her community.

She hopes to use her new role to improve the services available in her community including education and healthcare. 

Wilson was one of the seven candidates, including two other women, that ran for the position after the outgoing Chief announced he would not run for re-election after holding the position for two decades.

The Manitoba Chambers of Commerce have announced that they're bringing back their Tourism Rebate Incentive Program (TRIP) for 2022.

The rebate program encourages all Manitobans to spend vacations within the province. Last year alone they handed out $2.2 million in rebates to eligible Manitobans that applied after spending vacations in the province.

The eligible dates for the TRIP rebates this year will be from May 6 to 16 with all eligible receipts needing to be uploaded by May 23 at 11:59 pm.

There are two rebate options which include:

  • booking a stay at a hotel, motel, or resort in Manitoba and claiming the $100 rebate available 
  • a 50 percent rebate on general admission from one of Manitoba’s 31 Star Attractions.

Early this morning the Dauphin Fire Department responded to reports of a fire on Forrest Avenue West in Dauphin.

When the DFD arrived on the scene neighbors advised firefighters that the fire was in a garage in the back lane. 

The fire was caught early after a neighbor woke up to a loud bang and noticed the fire and immediately called 911.

Thanks to the quick response by the DFD the fire was quickly contained and extinguished without spreading to nearby buildings.

The cause of the fire was accidental due to an electrical short.

There were no injuries as a result of the fire and there are no estimates on damages at this time.

This evening at approximately 8:30 pm the Winnipeg Police Service arrested Trevis McLeod without incident in the downtown area of the city.

McLeod was turned over to the RCMP Major Crimes Service and is now in custody.

The RCMP would like to thank the public and the Winnipeg Police for their assistance in locating and arresting McLeod.

Trevis McLeod, 50-years-old, was wanted on three counts of second-degree murder and Arson after the murders of three of his family members, including his three-year-old son, six-year-old daughter, and his 32-year-old wife in Portage la Prairie where the murders took place in a residential property that was burned down.

The Dauphin Rotary Club is holding their annual Spring Used Book Sale next week from April 21-23.

The Sale will run from 10 am-7 pm each day and is being held at the United Church Auditorium at 37 3rd Avenue Northwest in Dauphin.

Everyone is invited to attend and donations are being accepted in the bin outside the church auditorium every day until the sale from 9 am-7 pm.

Residents can also bring their donations with them when they attend the book sale.

If you want to shop the sale you are asked to bring reusable bags with you however there will be some boxes available for those that are purchasing books.

Health Canada has announced that there is a large list of Kinder chocolate products that have been recalled due to a risk of salmonella poisoning.

There are over 20 different Kinder products that are on the list that you can find on the Health Canada Recall page here.

The products range from Kinder Easter Eggs to Advent Calendars with best before dates ranging from June 19, 2022, to Nov. 29, 2022.

To date there have not been any confirmed cases of illness due to the recall in Canada however there have been cases in Europe including approximately 134 children under the age of 10.

Similar recalls were issued across 10 other countries including the United States.

The City of Dauphin has announced that beginning tonight at 8 pm the removal of the snow from the storm will begin in the downtown core.

Crews will start the snow removal on Main Street as well as the streets in the business area downtown.

Residents are asked to make sure vehicles are not on any of the downtown streets as of 8 pm tonight to give plows ample room to fully clear the snow.

Business owners are also being reminded that snow and ice removal on the sidewalks in front of their businesses is up to them and they're being asked to clear the snow and ice if possible before the crews begin this evening.

Fusion Credit Union will be holding an in-person AGM next Wednesday at the Roblin Community Centre and all members are invited to attend.

The event that’ll be held on April 20th will include a dinner at 6 pm and the AGM to follow beginning at 7 pm. If you wish to attend the dinner, tickets for the dinner are only $5 and there’s no charge to attend the meeting.

If you cannot make it out to the Roblin Community Centre you can also attend a viewing of a live stream of the event on big screens inside the Fusion Credit Union branches in Dauphin, Brandon and Hamiota as well. The live stream viewings will include refreshments at 6:30 prior to the meeting.

Fusion Credit Union’s Chief Innovation Officer Michelle Mazerkewich said the agenda will include a lot of information about the credit union.

The AGM really is a good opportunity for Fusion members to learn about the success of the Credit Union over that past year. We do talk about financials but we also provide details of the community projects we supported as well as some of the other positive impacts we’ve made for our members and employees throughout the year.

Keystone Agricultural Producers is a farm lobby group that represents producers across Manitoba. In the provincial budget that was released this week, there are a number of items that will benefit farmers in the province according to KAP General Manager Brenna Mahoney.

Something that KAP has been working on for a very long time is Education Property Tax. Farmers do pay exceptionally more than an average citizen because of the land they have, so we've been pushing for a reduction and actually the elimination of Education Property Tax.

This year, residential farm property's Education Property Tax rebate will move from 25% to 37.5%. Next year it will be raised again, this time to 50%. Another cause that KAP has been lobbying for is childcare in rural communities.

Something else that is really important, and this is coming directly from our young farmers, is childcare is obviously a challenge, particularly in rural communities. There is the childcare subsidy program that was also announced so that's ten dollars a day per child. One thing we're going to continue to push for is more open spots in rural communities

Treacherous driving conditions are front and centre Thursday morning. All roads in and out of Dauphin are closed as we're still under a Winter Storm Warning.

Manitoba 511 has most roads heading south in the province closed, which means you can't head anywhere.

If you have to drive within city limits, do so extremely safely and take some extra time.
