There is a controlled burn going on right now south of Dauphin.  

Smoke from stubble burning is blowing over the highway just north of the entrance to Riding Mountain National Park.

The smoke has reduced visibility dramatically.

A 30 year old man is dead after being struck by a pickup truck north of Ashern.  

Around 3:30 this morning a 24-year-old woman and her passenger, both from Little Saskatchewan First Nation,  were driving north of Ashern on Highway 6 when their SUV rolled.

They were both were wearing their seatbelts and were able to exit the vehicle.

The 30 year old was subsequently struck by a southbound pickup truck and killed.

The driver of the SUV suffered non-life threatening injuries and Alcohol was not a factor in the collision of the SUV.

The driver of the pickup truck, a 41-year-old male from Ashern, is facing multiple charges including Impaired Driving Causing Death.

He remains in police custody at this time.

The Dauphin & District Community Foundation is holding their Annual General Meeting tomorrow.

Kit Daley, the executive director, expects to highlight the important initiatives and groups they have contributed to this year.

“I think it’s important that they hear what they are doing and how we are doing. We’ve had a lot of growth this year and we are pretty proud of the organizations we were able to assist through our granting. I think it’s important for the community to learn more about that.”

The AGM takes place at 7 in the Dauphin City council chamber at City Hall.  

 If you look up at the night sky this weekend you can catch the Eta Aquarid meteor shower. 

Visible until Monday, this shower can produce around 10-30 meteors per hour with the peak period to view this shower tomorrow. 

If you are able to see them in the sky, they will move past going around 30 to 70 km per second.

This year’s Boxes of Love collection drive was a success, but they are still looking for donations. 

Volunteer for Boxes of Love, Nicole Yunker, tells 730 CKDM what they are still looking for.  

“We are short 20 pairs of running shoes. They need to be brand new. We did collect 80 pairs and we are thrilled. We have 20 pairs to go; if anybody has any to drop off they can be dropped off at Parkland Crossing Monday to Friday 9-4. If anyone has any questions give me a call at (204) – 638-4477.”

 They are also hoping to find a hotel that will donate their small conditioner and lotions bottles.

With the very dry conditions in the Parkland, precautionary measures are being declared to avoid future problems. 

Starting immediately the Municipality of Ethelbert has issued a burn ban.

Dauphin is set to welcome 15 students from a school in New Brunswick in a couple of weeks.

This is part of the DRCSS’ Aboriginal Student Exchange Program.

Wade Houle, teacher at the DRCSS, notes when the students arrive.

“We’ll have 15 students from Rexton coming here and they will match up with our 15 students. They arrive Friday, May 18, pretty late, so they’ll come to the DRCSS in the evening and our families will meet them and take them home.  The following Saturday, we have activities planned all the way up to the following Thursday, which I believe is May 24.  Then they’ll head out to Winnipeg and fly out early in the morning on Friday, May 25.”

Local activities are planned out for the week for the students to participate in.

Between today and next Friday Parks Canada is planning a prescribed fire from Lake Audy to Whitewater Lake in Riding Mountain National Park.

This prescribed burn is being conducted in order to improve the ecological condition of fire-dependent forest and grassland communities and to reduce the risk of a severe fire occurring in the park.

 The entire burn area, including the Long Lake Trail, Grasshopper Trail and portions of the Central Trail, may be closed periodically to the public during the burn. 

Long Lake, Minnedosa River, and Whitewater Lake campsites will also be closed. 

There will also be temporary road closures on Lake Audy Road.

 These closures will be lifted as soon as it is safe to do so to minimize the disruption to park visitors.

There are reports of a grass fire east of Dauphin on highway 20 past Road 108.

Emergency crews are responding.

There are also reports of a grass fire around Sifton.

Sifton Fire Department has asked the Dauphin Fire Department for assistance.

McHappy Day at Dauphin’s local McDonald’s was a big success.

Brady Johnson, the owner of the restaurant, is excited about how well they did this year. 

 “It went incredible. It was our best results ever. Busiest Day in the store and best fundraising we’ve had as well."

In total 10,400 dollars was raised in Dauphin and will be split between the Ronald McDonald House in Winnipeg and Dauphin Minor Baseball.

The City of Dauphin has hired a new By-Law Enforcement Officer.

Colin Lesiuk, started working for the City of Dauphin on April 3.

He’s currently working on derelict properties and overall cleanliness of the city.

“For the most part, right now, I’m tackling cleanliness issues. For commercial and residential spaces, as soon as the snow is gone there’s a lot of garbage around.  Businesses are starting to start their summer projects, so I’m working on business licences.  Pretty soon we’re starting on our Property Task Force Committee and we work together too with residents and business owners to help clean up their properties finish their renovations and stuff like that’s been outstanding for three or four years, maybe longer.”
