Learning how to write from an expert is what youth attending a songwriting workshop can experience here at home.
On Saturday Desiree Doiron is leading the Youth Songwriters Workshop at the Watson Art Centre.
Clifton Flett, Organizer at the Watson Art Centre, talks about what she can help those aged 12 to 25 learn about the craft.
“I know Desiree has had experience in working with people and on her own in regards to where do you start, where are you having trouble, what if you get stuck, what inspirations do you look for, that kind of stuff. So anything that we can help them to keep going with that craft.”
Resignation for the workshop is free and can be done by calling the WAC at 638-6231.
It runs on Saturday from 1 to 4.

Human trafficking and prostitution is a concern many in the Parkland don’t think about.
For Joy Smith, former Member of Parliament the reality is all too real.
Smith responds to people who say it is not happening in small rural communities.
“I would say you’re wrong. It is happening in every district, and people aren’t recognizing it. You see, the public often looked at girls who got into trouble or got into the wrong crowd or got into prostitution as prostitutes, but they don’t know their backstory. The backstory was where someone groomed them. Someone targeted them.”
Smith presented on the issue this past Saturday, during a special presentation on Human Trafficking held at the Watson Art Centre.

The Dauphin firefighters are getting ready for their Annual Rooftop Campout.
The firefighters are around the community up until the Campout starts on March 15th at the Co-op grocery store and serving coffee at McDonald's on March 16th.
Marie Sorlie, Campout Coordinator, explains the campout.
“We try to raise funds and awareness for Muscular Dystrophy Canada. The firefighters will face the cold of a Manitoba winter camped on the roof of the Dauphin Marketplace Mall and we have other members from other departments joining us for this worthy cause. Each year, Canadian firefighters are champions of the Muscular Dystrophy Canada vision of finding a cure for a lifetime.”
The Firefighters are focusing on a goal of 25 thousand dollars towards the cause.

Yesterday the government announced they’ll be allocating funds for local child care centres.
Magical Horizons Day Care Centre was one of three programs in the Parkland that received funding for extra child care spaces.
Jamie Grouette, Executive Director of Magical Horizons says the funding is nice, but there is still a lot of work to do in fixing the child care problem in the Parkland.
“It obviously gives us more money to play around with, just having those extra spaces funded, those spaces were full. We have over 150 kids on our waitlist, and we were able to get 4 more spaces. Operating them without funding was important to us because we’re always trying to suit the needs of the community, so now that the spaces are funded it’s great for us because now that gives some money to put towards our program.”
Magical Horizons, along with Little Steps Head Start Family Programs and Daily Discoveries in Dauphin received a combined 26 spaces in the constituency.

The Dauphin Ag Society is hosting Farm Outlook 2018 this Thursday.
The event features many guest speakers who are chosen based on topics that are top of mind to Parkland producers.
President of the Ag Society, Ben Fox, says this year is no exception.
“We’ve got some really good speakers coming to talk on a wide variety of topics. In the morning we have a market outlook Neil Townsend, a senior market analyst with Farmlink, is going to give a presentation. Then there is some soybean topics covered in the morning and afternoon and of course some wheat topics as well.”
Farm Outlook 2018 takes place in the Lion’s Den at the Rec Complex from 8:30 to 4:30 on Thursday.
Tickets are $15 dollars each.

The province has announced they’ll be allocating funds for local child care centres.
The investment is a part of the Canada-Manitoba Early Learning and Child Care Agreement.
Daily Discoveries Inc. in Gilbert Plains, along with Magical Horizons and Little Steps Head Start Family Programs in Dauphin will be receiving a combined 26 spaces in the constituency.
The spaces include infant, pre-school and nursery school spaces.

The two-day winter storm has finally ended for the Parkland region.
Manitoba Highways opened up Highway 5 from Grandview to Roblin and Highway 83 from Swan River to past Russell, but are still reporting in as partly snowy.
The rest of the highways in the Parkland were reported as snow covered with swirling snow and fair visibility.

All buses in the Mountain View School Division won’t be running tomorrow morning.
The Division has made the decision knowing another batch of snow is expected to hit overnight.
Environment Canada predicts we could get winds reaching up to 50 km/h and another five to ten centimeters of snow.
Currently, Highway 5 from Grandview to Roblin is closed.
Highway 83 from Swan River to past Russell is also closed.

The city of Dauphin has announced a parking ban.
They will clear and wind-row the snow in Zone 5 - Main Street from 2nd Avenues South to 5th Avenues North, including 1 block east and west of Main Street.
The city asks all residents to remove all vehicles from the streets in this area until the crews have completed snow clearing on your street.
Parking Ban will be in effect tonight, from 8:00 to 8:00 in the morning.

Canada's National Ukrainian Festival is holding their Pyroghy Fundraising Gala this upcoming weekend.
Kayla Gillis, President of CNUF, explains what’s happening on Sunday:
“We’re going to feature different kinds of pyroghies, I believe all together there’s around 16 kinds, as well as borscht and kielbasa. There will be a wine pairing going on as well as we will have beer and other drinks available. So basically you come in, there’s some live entertainment, there’s a raffle and a silent auction. For the children there will be a chocolate Easter bunny to be raffled. Other than that you can come enjoy yourself, have a drink, have some pyroghies and just visit and enjoy the entertainment.”
Tickets for the Gala held at the Knights Hall are $20, and you can get your tickets at the CNUF Office.

A line break last Tuesday, led to the loss of water pressure in the distribution system.
Normal water use can resume.
