Manitoba says more than 1,000 asylum seekers have crossed on foot into the province from the U-S this year.

About 80 per cent of those who crossed and made a refugee claim are staying in Manitoba.

Carolyn Ryan of Manitoba Housing says the province opened a shelter in Gretna in May that temporarily housed 439 people.

But she says the number of people crossing the border to seek asylum has been declining, so the shelter will be closing.
