Yesterday, the Intermountain Conservation District Water Festival took place.
Around 225 grade 5 students from across the Parkland are participating in this year’s event. Jeff Thiele of the IMCD talks about how long the event has been held and talks a little about what the students are getting up to.
“Today we are having the Water Festival. It’s our 11th annual event and it’s open to all students in grade 5 in the Mountain View School Division. We invite them out to our office and yard site at Ethelbert, we have about 10 acres here, where kids are able to run around to about 30 stations here that they spend 15 minutes at each station and they move around. They get out and hands on interact with nature and get to learn hands-on, instead of just in the class room. They seem to really enjoy it here.”
What is great about this kind of event, according to Jeff, is that it is always better to learn hands on. Until you actually get and experience it for yourself it’s not quite the same. Topics the students learn about water, soil, water life, forestry and riparian areas in a field setting.
