Canadians across the country are using food banks more than in previous years.

A recent report by Food Banks Canada found eight out of ten provinces saw increases in their services.

Director of Policy and Research at Food Banks Canada, Shawn Pegg feels they are taking steps towards increasing their distribution of food.

"We know that almost a third of food banks ran out of food at some point in the past year, which I think you know gives a sense the kind of critical shortages that food banks face on a regular basis... at the same time, the network has done a lot of work to increase its capacity."

With respects to Manitoba, Manager of Hunger and Poverty Awareness at Winnipeg Harvest Inc. Donald Denham says the province's numbers did go down but there's still a lot of work to be done.

Only Manitoba and Ontario did not see an increase in food bank services in comparison to last year.
