An independent investigation has determined that RCMP officers acted appropriately during an arrest in Swan River that resulted in a serious injury.
On December 1, three officers attended a residence where a male had called a psychiatric facility, threatening violence against others.
While officers tried to arrest the man, he allegedly reached for one of their firearms and force was used to restrain him, according to The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba.
He was later diagnosed at the local hospital with intra abdominal bleeding from blunt trauma, bruising to his right eye, and some abrasions. After a transfer to Dauphin's hospital, he was diagnosed with a liver laceration.
The IIU says the officers had sufficient grounds to make an arrest under the Mental Health Act and the force used was necessary to minimize harm to all involved.
