The City of Dauphin is joining calls to have newcomers to the province get their Manitoba Health Cards directly from the province.

Director of Finance Scott Carr says the city currently does most of the work in getting the forms processed.

Mayor Eric Irwin says it is putting too much of a strain on administration's time.

"Our administration was spending a lot of time with people doing this when it isn't a municipal responsibility at all. It's a provincial responsibility, and provincial health should be looking after it. It looks like they are starting to by putting an online application."

Since health care is a provincial matter, the Association of Manitoba Municipalities would now have to lobby the province for the changes.

Carr says city administration staff spend over an hour every week filing health care application forms.
