Smoke from wildfires burning across the prairies is forcing the provincial government to put the kibosh on parts of some Canada Day festivities in Manitoba.

The province has cancelled all burning permits, fire bans are in effect, and permits will not be issued for fireworks in the Northwest region of Manitoba.

There will be no fireworks in The Pas, Flin Flon and Cranberry Portage.

Fires will only be allowed in approved, enclosed pits in provincial parks and other locations between 8am and 8pm.

The province estimates there's been a total of 264 wildfires in Manitoba this season, 84 of which are still active.
