Advanced Voting

Don't want to wait until April 19th to vote, well your wish has been granted.

Starting today until the 16th there will be an advanced voting station set up at the Dauphin Market Place Mall. But for other areas here in the Parkland, dates vary.

Polling hours are 8:00 a-m to 8:00 p-m Monday to Saturday, and noon to 6:00 p-m Sunday.

To check out when and where the advanced voting stations will be set up in Gilbert Plains, Grandview, Sifton, and Roblin you can go to our website to see the full list of dates.

 Dakota Tipi First Nation Shooting

A councillor and relative of two people shot on a Manitoba reserve says the shooting was fuelled by drugs and alcohol.

A man and a woman were shot this week in separate homes on the Dakota Tipi First Nation, prompting the community to be locked down as R-C-M-P warned residents about an armed suspect on the loose.
A 31-year-old man was arrested later that day and charges are pending.

Councillor Daniel Pashe says the shooter had recently moved back to the community after serving time in prison and became angry after consuming alcohol and taking pills.

Fundraising Fraud

A 19-year-old woman awaiting a heart transplant in a Montreal hospital told police she was surprised to find a fund set up for her had just 70 dollars in it.

A videotaped police interview with Jessica Bondar was shown in a Winnipeg court this week at the fraud trial of Bondar's aunt, Sheryl Matheson.

Bondar died in 2011, a few weeks after Matheson was arrested and charged with allegedly withdrawing more than 30-thousand dollars from the account to pay for a vacation, household bills, gasoline, pool supplies and pet food.

Matheson has pleaded not guilty to fraud and theft.

Her lawyer is fighting the admissibility of Bondar's statement, arguing it's unreliable given her health at the time was frail.

Doctor Assisted Death

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says his government will defend individuals' rights while protecting the most vulnerable in any law it drafts on doctor-assisted death.

Trudeau says he's confident the government can meet the Supreme Court's June 6th deadline for new legislation, while also providing time for debate on the controversial issue.

There are indications the Liberals won't accept all the recommendations of a panel, including one that people with dementia be allowed to request assisted death in advance.

The new law is expected to spell out more stringent eligibility criteria than the panel recommended.
