The City of Dauphin has opened a Request for Proposals to find a contractor able to remove several diseased trees across the City.
According to the City, there are 159 diseased elm trees within city limits, infested with Dutch Elm Disease.
Dutch Elm Disease is caused by a fungus that disrupts a tree's ability to conduct water, causing the tree to die sooner than it should. The disease is mainly spread by elm bark beetles, which develop inside the bark, and fly to other trees while carrying the infection. According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Manitoba is one of seven provinces considered to be generally infested.
The trees the City of Dauphin is seeking to have removed are all across city limits, though the two main groupings of infected trees are on Whitmore Avenue near Parkland Crossing, and Whitmore Avenue and Sixth Avenue Southeast.
Eligible companies are encouraged to apply on the City's website.
