The Dauphin Clippers varsity boys basketball team is one step closer to earning a berth to the provincial championships.

In their first zone championship game against Swan River earlier this week, Dauphin led from start to finish and cruised in the end to a 98-50 win over the Tigers. Nick Hudyma led the way with 28 points, seven assists, five steals, and two blocks. Ronin Mouck had a monster game with 36 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, and six steals. Miguel Boncodin had 12 points, four assists, and three steals.

If Dauphin is able to beat Swan River again on Tuesday, they will advance to a pre-qualifer event for the provincial event. 

Dauphin then played a tournament in Neepawa and came home with a bronze medal to add to their trophy case in what has been an impressive season on the court.

They first put up 99 points in a dominating victory with St. Laurent with Josh Larocque chipping in 12 points and Chase Kunza also had 12 points. Nick Hudyma had 25 points and 11 steals in the win.

In the team's next game, they came up short against Virden, 84-72. Josiah Seale had a double double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Dauphin would rebound in the third place match as they downed the host team, 53-49. Nick Hudyma led the way with 19 points and eight rebounds while Chase Kunza had 12 points, three steals, and four rebounds. Lucas Wood had three points, 12 rebounds and Ryder Waggoner had a monster game on the boards with 15 rebounds.

The Swan Valley Stampeders made it a 1-1 game after 20 minutes of play.

From that point on, it was all Dauphin Kings on Saturday night as they scored five straight goals to earn their 29th win of the season as they downed their Parkland rival in convincing fashion with a 6-1 win at the Centennial Arena.

It was Dauphin's second straight win after they beat Steinbach on Friday night. Cole Sheffield earned his 24th win of the season as he finished the night with 27 saves and Dauphin went 1-for-5 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.

Jordan Bax had Dauphin's lone goal in the first period while Ethan Lintner scored on the power play for the Stampeders and that was Swan Valley's lone goal of the game.

Dauphin came out in the 2nd and fired 22 shots and found the back of the net four times. Gabriel Bugeaud, Trey Gnetz, and Joshua Schmidt all scored a single for the Kings. The highlight of the period was Alex Senf who scored a 'MICHIGAN' goal and it was his ninth marker of the season. Cayden Glover scored Dauphin's lone goal of the third as they skated off with a 6-1 victory. Dauphin now moves to 29-14-1-1.

The Kings will return to the ice on Tuesday as they welcome Swan Valley to Credit Union Place.

It has been a mixed bag last seven days for the Dauphin Kings, but for the second time in less than a month, they have downed one of the top teams in the country.

On home ice to open up a busy stretch, the Kings held on late to beat the Steinbach Pistons in a great game, 3-2. It was Dauphin's second straight win against the Pistons after losing the first two games of the season against them.

Dauphin's penalty kill was clutch in the game. They started things by killing off a double minor early in the contest and after Alex Senf took a penalty late in the game, they killed off a 6-on-4 as they secured two big points against the top team in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. 

Cayden Glover scored the game winner as he tipped in a pass from Ashton Paul with just more than ine minutes left in the game. Alex Senf also scored in the game while Paul scored his third as a King in the victory.

Once again, Cole Sheffield was brilliant in net as he made 25 saves in the victory. The Kings will now make their way to Swan River to play the Stampeders on Saturday night. It's been quite the run for Team Kyle Forsyth on the pebbled ice.

They won the Gilbert Plains Competitive League of Curling on Thursday evening to wrap up a great four-week stretch. Jarvis Whyte, Trent Hill, and Cody Hill joined Kyle. The foursome went 8-1 in the round-robin and finished in first place heading into the playoffs.

In the final, Team Forsyth beat Team Dean Bates, 6-2 after seven ends. The team recently won the Parkland Super League of Curling and a bonspiel in McCreary last weekend.

When you bring up hockey and the name Legaarden, many people think of goals scored and many other goals that were set up.

Cade Legaarden started his journey of next level hockey with the Parkland U15 Rangers in the 2020-21 season. It was one that was cut very short because of the pandemic; however, Cade was off to a great start with one goal and one assist in five games. Legaarden then returned to the team the following season and after posting 25 points in 30 regular season games, the star from Grandview took his game to the next level in the playoffs. Across five games, Cade scored four times while adding four assists to average well more than a point per game.

Cade then made the jump up to the U18 level where he scored four goals and had seven points in 43 games. Then again, Cade took the next step just as he did the year prior with the U15 team.

Legaarden is now in his fourth season with the Rangers program and it has been his best to date as the 2023-24 season slowly comes to a close for the club. While Parkland has just 13 wins this year and are very unlikely to qualify for the playoffs, Cade believes being a Ranger is a true honour.

"It means a lot to be the Parkland Ranger, to get the chance to live at home and play at this high level in front of our amazing fans, it's always a great feeling," said Legaarden. "The season for sure hasn't gone the way we would have hoped, but when we put in a full 60 minutes, I believe we can compete with anyone and we have shown that on several occasions."

With 15 goals and 15 assists in 39 games this year, Cade finds himself second in team scoring, only behind Hayden Seib. Legaarden has proved throughout the season that he can be a game changer and he's looking forward to continuing to grow as he looks to play at the next level after his days as a Ranger are done.

"It's been a confidence thing this year, I'm feeling confident on the ice and confident in my abilities," offered Legaarden. "I also have to give a lot of the credit to my teammates and coaches, without them, I wouldn't be able to do what I am doing out on the ice."

Legaarden will be back on the ice this weekend when Parkland plays on home ice Saturday and Sunday against the Winnipeg Bruins. Parkland has just six games left in the regular season and Cade is looking forward to making the most of them.

"The mindset is just leaving everything out on the ice, we need to play a full 60 minutes each night," said Legaarden. "We're still pushing and our goal is to win as many games as we can the rest of the way. We want to show the league that we are for real."

While Cade focuses on his play with Parkland and becoming the best player that he can, he is also keeping track of the Winkler Flyers as that's where his brother Jayce is playing. Jayce is tied for fith in Flyers scoring with 33 points and he is a former Ranger all-star that scored 46 goals in the 2021-22 season.

"He has worked hard for everything he has got," said Legaarden. "It's good for him, I'm proud of him and I hope he can keep it going."

Just like his brother, Cade's goal is to play at the next level and he knows he will have to continue pushing.

"I have to get stronger and faster," ended Legaarden. "My work ethic has to always stay as high as possible and I can never stop, it's all about giving it all I have every single second on and off the ice."

A season doesn't go by without the Dauphin Clippers being contenders to win a championship in the Westman High School Hockey League.

Being one of the top programs on a year-by-year basis in the league, the Clippers are once again championship contenders this year after a great start to the season, a regular season that will see the team play just one more league game.

Sitting in a tie for first place in the league, Dauphin is 21-6-2 on the campaign. That currently has them tied with the Vincent Massey Vikings for the top spot. While Dauphin is in a tie for first, Vincent Massey along with a few teams below them all have games in hand. 

Jason Alf is proud of how the team has come together this year.

"I have been very happy with how things have gone this year, you never know what to expect at the start of the season," said Alf. "I am not sure if we thought we would be in this position at this time of the year, but the guys have been playing very well."

Dauphin's final league game comes on home ice when the Clippers welcome Crocus Plains to town on February 23. In a game that Dauphin will enter as the favourite, the Clippers can finish the regular season with a maximum of 46 points.

Vincent Massey, with three regular-season games left, can finish with 50 points while Neepawa can finish the season with 53 points if they win out. The Huskies can finish with 48 and those are the three teams that can catch or surpass Dauphin in the standings. 

Dauphin is in an excellent spot to finish in the top four in the standings heading into the playoffs and as Alf says, it's been a complete team effort.

"We definitely would not be anywhere close to where we are without the play of Owen Chubka, he has been excellent," offered Alf. "Our defensive play has been fairly strong and we're getting some timely goals from every line. We don't have anyone near the top 10, but we're scoring by committee and getting the goals that we need when we need them."

Chubka has 12 wins this season with a 3.10 goals-against average to go along with a .903 save percentage. Tyron Sweetman leads the way offensively for Dauphin with 20 goals and 24 assists.

As Dauphin now prepares for their regular season finale next Friday, they will do so by playing against some American teams in Las Vegas. The Clippers will make their way to Las Vegas Presidents Day Tournament which opens this weekend. The Clippers will play four games and the finals are set for Monday afternoon.

"The guys are looking forward to getting on the road and doing something different," said Alf. "It's a good opportunity for the guys to bond and really spend a ton of time together, it's a good chance to get away and not think about league play for a bit."

When it comes to expectations, Dauphin has faired very well in the past when they went down south for tournaments.

"We look at it as a chance to get some players in positions that they maybe haven't been in before," ended Alf. "When it comes down to it, we're always trying to win. We just want to play some good hockey and we'll see how it goes."

For the second time in five days, the Dauphin Kings lost to the Waywayseecappo Wolverines.

This time, they didn't earn any points in a 3-2 regulation as Wayway won for the fifth time in a row.

Dauphin dominated the Wolverines on the shot clock by a margin of 42-23; however, Jase Wareham was incredible in net for the Wolverines in the win. 

Carter Zalischuk and Gabriel Bugeaud scored for Dauphin in the defeat. The Kings failed to gain any ground and lost one of their games in hand on the Blizzard.

They remain two points back of first in the West and have two games in hand on the Blizz. The Wolverines; meanwhile, are just a single point back of Neepawa for the final playoff spot in the division and they will play Neepawa twice in the final month of the season. 

The Kings host Steinbach on Friday.

The 14U Predators Volleyball Club put together another great weekend in Regina.

After finishing first in their pool, the Predators ultimately finished with a third-place finish playing top teams from across the country. In the team's round-robin, they swept Spike Squad from Regina, Central Valley from Warman/Weyburn, and split with the tournament's host QCVC.

Earning a bye into the Final 4, the Predators lost a close battle to the Regina Cougars, losing the third set, 16-14. The Predators did finish out the tournament strong with a bronze medal win against the Yorkton Avalanche. 

Next up for the team is an exhibition match on Tuesday in Russell before heading to Winnipeg to play in the Bandits tournament this weekend.

The Dauphin Kings Junior A Hockey Club has announced that the man leading the organization isn't going anywhere.

The Club announced Tuesday that Doug Hedley will remain as the team's head coach and general manager for two more seasons.

Hedley, who led the club to an MJHL championship two seasons ago, currently has Dauphin in a fierce battle for second place in the West Division after winning 27 games so far this year. The Kings return to action on Tuesday night when they head to Waywayseecappo to play the Wolverines and you can hear the game right here on 730CKDM.

Consistency, hard work, and dedication. Those three traits have led to a great season for the Dauphin Clippers varsity boys' basketball team.

The team that Steve Hudyma leads has continued to put together strong performances every time they hit the court as the provincial championships continue to near.

Their first tournament of the year saw the team finish sixth out of 16 teams at the Brandon Sun Invitational and along the journey, Dauphin was a consolation championship in Sanford, to go along with a second-place finish in Winkler, and they also put together a strong weekend at Daniel Mac in Winnipeg earlier this month. 

Steve says he's proud of how the team continues to come out to play.

"Our season is going very well, we continue to get better and improve after every tournament that we attend," said Hudyma. "As a coach, that's what you're always looking for."

In their most recent action, Dauphin was in a class of their own. The team hosted their home tournament over the weekend at the DRCSS and they steamrolled their competition winning all four games. In their opener, Dauphin downed Swan Valley, 77-60. Nick Hudyma had 32 points, six steals and five assists. Lucas Wood recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Gabe Calso had 12 points and three steals.

Dauphin then beat Neepawa, 76-66 with Ronin Mouck grabbing 11 rebounds and adding 16 points. Josiah Seale had 17 points and 10 rebounds while he was named the player of the game. Going up against Portage in their next game, Nick Hudyma was named player of the game after scoring 33 points in a 95-55 win. Dauphin then beat Neepawa, 83-68, to win the championship. Mouck was named player of the game thanks to his eight-point, 10 rebound performance.

After not playing in the team's opener against Swan Valley because of a lower-body injury, Ronin put together a brilliant weekend.

"Ronin is an integral part of our team, he does so many things that don't show up on the stat sheet at times," said Hudyma. "He has also come up clutch so many times, when we need a bucket, he can make it happen. He helps our team succeed so tremendously."

Hudyma also talked about winning a championship on the team's home court.

"It felt really good, I know the boys were really happy to have the home town crowd cheering for them," offered Hudyma. "With four convincing wins, the boys all stepped up and played very well, it was a great weekend for us."

Next up for Dauphin is a zone championship game on Tuesday against Swan Valley. These two teams played on Tuesday and while the Clippers were without Ronin, they still secured a 17 point victory. Mouck will be back in the lineup on Tuesday and if Dauphin is able to win the game, they will advance to a provincial championship pre-qualifier. 

"Our goal since day one has been to make the provincial championships, that is what we are and have been pushing for since the start of the season," ended Hudyma. "There is still plenty of work to do and I know the guys are all geared up and ready for the stretch push."

The Clippers have certainly embraced the 'WE' instead of 'ME' mentality and you can see them in action on Tuesday night.

Reid Carruthers and his foursome are heading to the Montana's Brier next month in Regina.

Team Carruthers capped off a championship run on Sunday afternoon as they downed Team Calvert, 6-3, in the finals. Team Carruthers stole two points in the 10th end to seal the victory.

Brad Jacobs, Derek Samagalski, and Connor Njegovan round out the foursome as they will head to Regina for the Brier that takes place from March 1 to 10.

Team Todoruk of Dauphin consisting of Greg, Darcy, Rob Fisher, and Terron Stykalo put together a great weekend against the top teams in the province. They played six games and qualified for the Elite 8 where they lost to Team Stewart, 8-4.
