Brayden Kohlman was one of two Ste. Rose batters that crossed the plate on Thursday night in an 11-2 loss to open their season against Minnedosa.

Eric Preston had five strikeouts on the mound while Kohlman had another three. Kayden Caumartin tallied two more.

The Expos now have some time to regroup as they don’t play again until July 18 when they play the Brandon Giants.

Fresh off a fifth place finish at the 99th Manitoba junior men’s golf championship, Jose Mekish-Lacquette had another good day on the links on Thursday and this time, his dad was on the course with him.

Jose and Daryl made their way to Dakota Dunes Golf Course just outside of Saskatoon for the FSIN David Pratt scramble championship.

The Parkland duo made eagle on hole 10 and they finished at 12 under, good enough for a second place finish.

They were four under on the front and eight under on the back.

For the first time in nearly two years, fans were inside IG Field on Wednesday night as Valour FC played York United in Canadian Premier League action.

2000 fully immunized fans were in the stands cheering on the home team as live sports made a return to Winnipeg. And although Valour FC fell just short and dropped their first game of the season, it was a night to remember for fans, players, and coaches that were a part of the action.

Raphael Ohin, a midfielder for Valour FC, says the electricity in the building was incredible and much needed.

"We found out first hand how passionate Winnipeg is," said Ohin. "It was amazing to see the fans in the crowd, such a great feeling."

Valour FC finds itself at the top of the CPL standings after winning three of their first four games. The team's seven goals are the most in the league while they have only given up two, tied for the fewest in the league.

Rob Gale is the team's head coach and he echoed Ohin's comments.

"It's what the sport and passion can bring and we need fans in the stands more now than ever," offered Gale. "So for them to be back in the stands watching, it's a great feeling. I wanted to go in the stands and hug each and every fan."

So if you're fully immunized and you're looking to head to a live sporting event, you now have that chance. Tickets are available for several games moving forward, including Valour FC's next contest on Sunday when they play Forge FC at 12:30 p.m. Full ticket details are here.

There will be a special kind of buzz in Ste. Rose on Thursday night, a feeling that hasn't felt in quite a while as baseball is back in the community.

The Ste. Rose U18 Expos will begin their season playing in the Midwest U18 League, a league that features six teams. Ste. Rose's 10 game schedule kicks off against Minnedosa at 7:00 p.m. in Ste. Rose. Due to current public health orders, only 25 fans will be permitted to watch at the diamond.

Mike Shaw and Marc Hazlewood will handle coaching duties for a team that includes Nelson Lepla, Colby Maguet, Eric Preston, Jesse Boerchers, Brayden Kohlman, Kayden Caumartin, Shayne Shura-Froese, Ryan Benson, Isaac Walker, Jeff Gilmore, Jacob Martin, Liam Musgrave, Brooke White, and Ashley Scott.

The team has had a few full practices leading up to game one and Hazlewood says everyone is ready to get down to business.

"Our players are very serious when it comes to their baseball," said Hazlewood. "We have lots of fun out there, but we're very competitive as well. For most of our players to miss sports for a long time, this is something to look forward to, it's going to be a lot of fun."

Kendell Caumartin is the team's manager. When highlighting where the team will be the strongest, it appears they will be a well-rounded squad. The team has played a lot of baseball together and chemistry certainly won't be a problem when they hit the diamond.

"We have a very deep lineup this year, we have some very strong pitching and our defence will be solid," continued Hazlewood. "We'll work on our hitting throughout the season. It's extremely early, as time goes on, we're going to improve and be very competitive."

After Thursday's game against Minnedosa, Ste. Rose will also play the Brandon Giants, Brandon Knights, Hamiota Red Sox, and the Gladstone Lakers. Following Wednesday's game, Ste. Rose will get nine days off before they go through an extremely busy stretch to end the month. They will play on July 18, 20, 21, 28, and 29. They wrap up their season on August 10 in Brandon as they play the Knights.

That game will be played at Andrew's Field under the lights, which the team is very excited about.

"That will be quite exciting, it's going to be a neat experience for the kids," ended Hazlewood.

Binscarth has a new provincial champion.

Clara Peake followed up back-to-back 82s with a third-round, 75 on Wednesday. Clara had four birdies in her final round as she won Golf Manitoba's junior women's provincial championships at the Shilo Country Club.

"I honestly can't even describe the feeling," said Peake. "I'm so happy that I was able to close it out."

Peake beat Crystal Zamzow of Swan River by 11 strokes. Clara's championship means golfers in the Parkland have won the last two Manitoba junior provincial championships as Crystal won the event last summer.

Both Clara and Crystal will now compete in the Canadian Junior Girls Championship from July 20-23 at the Leduc Golf and Country Club.

On the men's side, Eric Prokopowich and Jose-Mekish Lacquette have booked their tickets to Quebec. Jose shot 73 in Wednesday's final round as he finished in a tie for fifth place. Prokopowich, meanwhile, fired a 74 in the final round to finish in solo seventh place.

They will now play in the national championships at the Vallée du Richelieu (Club de golf) in Sainte-Julie , Quebec from August 9-12.

Hayden Delaloye of Neepawa finished in a tie for 15th while Jackson Delaurier finished solo 20th. Thomas Scott finished in a tie for 22nd. Boston Karlson fired his best score of the tournament, an 83. Hayden Shtykalo finished in second place in the 12 & under age group.

Riese Gaber had the chance to return home to spend some time with his family and friends in the Parkland and now, he's back south of the border.

The Gilbert Plains native is back on the ice at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in North Dakota after a tremendous first year with the Fighting Hawks. Gaber said he's slowly getting back into the swing of things as he prepares for his sophomore season with one of the best teams in the college ranks.

"I'm really excited heading into my second season here, it should be a pretty good year," said Gaber. "It's a big summer for me, I'm looking to really dial in this season."

The Fighting Hawks won the National Collegiate Hockey Conference's (NCHC) regular-season title last season as they were crowned Penrose Cup champions.

The former Dauphin King was a big reason why North Dakota enjoyed so much success as he scored 11 times in 29 games and he added 10 assists. He was named to the conference's all-rookie team and he stepped up his game even more in the conference tournament. Gaber scored once in their 6-2 quarterfinal Frozen Faceoff win against Miami which was followed up with a 2-1 overtime win against Denver.

In the conference tournament championship game, Gaber scored twice as the Fighting Hawks downed St. Cloud State, 5-3. After the victory, Gaber was named the tournament's most valuable player and he was named to the all-tournament team. The team's season ultimately came to an end on March 27 when they lost to Minnesota-Duluth, with the Bulldogs winning the game in the fifth overtime.

Gaber was certainly pleased with his play last season and he's looking forward to building on that so he can continue to produce.

"My energy is the biggest thing that I need to continue bringing to the table," said Gaber. "I also need to get bigger, faster, and stronger. I need to be able to beat guys on the rush."

North Dakota's schedule for the 2021-22 season has been released as they will kick things off with an exhibition game on home ice against the Manitoba Bisons, a member of Canada West. Gaber will meet a fellow Gilbert Plains native on October 15 and 16 as North Dakota plays the Bemidji State Beavers in a home and home. Bemidji State features Tyler Jubenvill.

The best of three NCHC quarterfinals are played March 11 to 13 and the NCHC Frozen Four is set for March 18 and 19 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Gaber has worked extremely hard to get where he is and he's extremely grateful for the opportunity to play with the green and white.

"Every day here is a privilege and an honour, I just try and take it day by day," ended Gaber. "I'll work as hard as I can so I can make the most of my time here."

Eric Prokopowich has made a big move up the leaderboard at the 99th Manitoba junior men's golf championship at the Shilo Country Club.

The Dauphin golfer had one birdie as he fired a four-over, 76, two strokes better than Monday. He moved six spots up the leaderboard and he's now in a tie for sixth heading into Wednesday's final round.

Joining him in a tie for sixth is Jose Mekish-Lacquette who fired an 80 on Tuesday. Thomas Scott moved up 10 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 16th after a four-over, 76, while Hayden Delaloye of Neepawa is in a tie for 21st.

Jackson Delaurier is in 28th place heading into Wednesday's final round while Boston Karlson finds himself in 39th place. In the 12 & under age group, Hayden Shtykalo is in second place after he shot an 86 on Tuesday to sit nine strokes behind the lead.

On the women's side, Binscarth's Clara Peake is one more solid day away from winning a provincial title. She fired her second straight 82 as she leads Addison Kartusch by six strokes heading into Wednesday's final round. Crystal Zamzow of Swan River is eight strokes behind the lead while Jeri Lafleche of Clear Lake is 10 strokes behind the lead.

Last year's champions are returning to the Gilbert Plains Country Club later this month.

Chad Jones and Jarrett Newton teamed up to win the Battle for the Belts two-man scramble last year and the duo has confirmed that they will return as they look to defend their title.

As of Tuesday morning, only six-team spots remain ahead of the tournament which is set for Sunday, July 25.

"There's no doubt in the next few days we're going to sell out," said Danny Scott. "That will make a sell-out for the second straight year which is very exciting."

It's just $60/person which includes your round, a meal, and a chance at prizes. The $10,000 hole-in-one prize is also back again as one lucky person will win that if they can ace hole #9. There will also be a $1000 hole-in-one prize on hole #4.

Although the event does welcome players that shoot around or under par, you don't have to. Whether you shoot in the 70s or in the 100s, the event is open to golfers of all skill levels.

"It's just a great day, you don't have to be the best golfer in the world," said Scott. "You get the chance to play with who you want."

To confirm your team, you must pre-pay and you can register by heading to the pro shop at the Gilbert Plains Country Club. Money raised goes towards improvements at the GPCC and tournament organizers were able to donate $500 to the new event centre from last year.

The Parkland is well represented at this week's Golf Manitoba junior men's and women's provincial championship and it was a solid first day at the Shilo Country Club.

On the women's side, Clara Peake of Binscarth leads the way after she posted a first round 12 over, 82. One stroke behind Clara is Crystal Zamzow of the Swan River Golf and Country Club. Crystal went birdie, birdie on hole 14 and 15.

Addison Kartusch of Winnipeg rounds out the top three with her 17 over, 87 in the first round.

Jose Mekish-Lacquette finds himself in fourth place alone after round one after a two over, 74. He finished with five birdies on the round. Braxton Kuntz, Trey Ross, and Jack Rudick are all tied for the lead at even par.

Eric Prokopowich finds himself in a tie for 12th after a first round 78. Jackson Delaurier is in a tie for 21st after a 9 over, 81 while Thomas Scott of Dauphin shot an 83. Boston Karlson finished with a first round 86

Delwyn Doerksen had zero bogies en route to firing a five-under, 66 at Golf Manitoba's Mid-Amateur Qualifier at the Transcona Golf Club. His performance earned him a spot in the main tournament, this weekend at the Niakwa Country Club.

Jarrett Newton started his round with two straight bogies and overall on the 3,293-yard front nine, he carded a seven-over, 43. A bogey on 10 was followed up with three straight pars, before the Roblin native made a double bogey on the par 3, 14th.

The near scratch golfer would have to turn it up in the final few holes if he wanted to qualify and that's exactly what he did. Following pars on 15 and 16, Jarrett knocked in his first birdie of the day on the par 5, 17th.

Newton found himself in a rather tough spot on the 18th hole, needing to cover the hazard in front of the green and his lie certainly wasn't perfect.

Knowing he had to at the very least make a par, Newton stepped up to the ball and hit a solid shot that ended up finishing about 18-feet from the hole. Little did Jarrett know that par wouldn't be enough to make the cut, but a birdie would be. Newton admits to struggling with the flat stick throughout the round but he came up clutch when he needed to, as Newton drained the 18-footer to finish the round with two straight birdies to post a 79.

That putt has clinched Jarrett a spot in the main tournament in Winnipeg at Niakwa, a course that he says is in incredible shape.

"It just worked out, I was really excited to make it in," said Newton. "I was disappointed in how I scored, not how I played. Now I can get a few more competitive rounds in and it's important that I manage my nerves more than I was able to at Transcona."

The field at Niakwa has now been trimmed to 77 with the event beginning on Friday, July 9 with the final round coming on championship Sunday. Jarrett says he's hitting the ball solid and he's looking forward to the challenge of competing against the top mid-amateurs in the province.

"I'm most looking forward to playing with real special players," said Newton. "It's going to be good for me to see how I can compete against them and that's what golf is all about, it's a battle with yourself and that was a problem for me in Transcona. I battled and now I get to play three rounds of great golf with great players, whatever happens, happens."

Prior to returning back home to practice his game in Roblin, Newton had the chance to play Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course, rated as one of the top courses in Canada. He started bogey, bogey, par, bogey in his first four holes.

Following that stretch, Jarrett got on a par train and stayed on it for the remainder of the round, as he made par on the remaining holes to card a three-over, 74.

Boston Karlson and Dale Murray went down to the wire at the Gilbert Plains Country Club on Saturday night and the match finished in grand style.

Playing the par 3 ninth, Murray aced the hole to win the match.

It was the Gilbert Plains' native fourth hole-in-one of his career.
