This week was supposed to be one of celebration and one where the City of Dauphin was going to be able to showcase this wonderful city and region. The Opening Ceremonies for the 2020 Manitoba Summer Games Powered by Manitoba Hydro were supposed to take place on Sunday.
The novel coronavirus put a stop to that; however, at least for this year. The Games were officially postponed back in April and they will now take place from July 11-17, 2021.
"Clayton and I were talking on the weekend and we just thought how different our lives would have been if this event was going on right now," said Carla Wolfenden, Co-Chair. "It's strange to think about what could have been."
The 2021 Games will include Athletics, Baseball, Basketball, Cycling, Golf, Rugby, Sailing, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Triathlon, and Volleyball. Months and months went into preparing for the event that would be underway if it wasn't for COVID-19.
It's an emotional time for many involved including Carla, but she also has the mindset that this will allow organizers to tie some loose ends ahead of what will be a historic 2021 in the City of Sunshine.
"We were ready to go. All of our committees had their operations in place and we were ready to gather as a group and share everything," added Wolfenden. "When we start meeting in the winter, we'll be hitting the ground running to assure that the Games are extremely successful and memorable."
Wolfenden wants to thank everyone for all of their support and that everyone involved is looking forward to that continued support as the countdown to next summer's Games continues.
