Gilbert Plains Must Decide What to Do with Community Hall

The people of Gilbert Plains are trying to decide what to do with their aging community hall.

Reeve Blake Price said at a community meeting last night, that the current hall is not up to code, citing problems with the bathrooms and kitchen, ventilation, and a lack of fire alarms, among other problems.

Price presented four different options: building a new hall, renovating the current one, adding on to the hall, or doing nothing and forcing it to close down the line. Price says he wants to build a new hall.

"From a subcommittee standpoint especially, I think our preferred option is to build a new hall. I mean, it’s long term, it’s done. You’re finished with it."

Price says renovation would cost about $750,000, compared to $1.3-million for a new hall.

Those in attendance were given informal ballots to see which way the community wants to go. If you were unable to make it, you can pick up a ballot any time this week at the Gilbert Plains municipal office.

Grading, Pothole Repair Will Start When Ground Thaws

Dauphin's public works director says it's still only April, and we're a long ways off from a lot of road maintenance work.

Asked about backlane and road work, Bill Brenner told council last night the ground needs to thaw and dry.

"We will grade all the lanes first thing in the spring and we normally do it in the fall, and same with pothole repair, as soon as the streets are dry enough, as soon as we can get out to do some of this work we will definitely be out there doing it."

Brenner said boulevard sweeping will start either later this week or early next week.
