Eric Prokopowich sank six birdies and fired a 29 on the front nine at the Dauphin Lake Golf Club on Friday.
He finished with a five-under 65 to tie his personal best. He then packed his bags, put his clubs in his car, and hit the road to head to Golf Manitoba's Amateur Championships at the Rossmere Golf & Country Club.
He brought his A game to Winnipeg and put himself right into contention after round one of the three-day event. Eric was one of just six golfers that shot under par as he fired a one-under, 69. That puts him just one stroke back of the lead, held by three-time defending champion Braxton Kuntz, Drew Jones, and Jaden Jones.
Eric had five birdies and was tied for the lead before a bogey on the 18th hole to end his day. Prokopowich will enter Tuesday in a tie for fourth place.
Thomas Scott of Dauphin shot an opening round 76 and is in a tie for 41st heading into Tuesday. To note, that's just eight strokes back of the lead.
Hayden Delaloye of Neepawa finds himself in a tie for 66th after a 10-over, 80.
Jackson Delaurier of Dauphin shot a 83 on Monday. He had a solo birdie on the tough 11th hole.
Derek Benson of McCreary also shot an 83.
Round two continues Tuesday morning.

Gabriel Beaudin has been taking his volleyball talents to Brandon for the past two years.
The star volleyballer from Dauphin played with the Brandon Volleyball Club (BVC) for the past two seasons. This past season, Beaudin helped the team finish fourth place at the provincial championships. Playing the game since he was just a young kid, Beaudin has grown into an all-star on the court.
Since then, Beaudin has competed on Team Manitoba at the North American Indigenous Games and also provincially as a member of the Dauphin Clippers.
"It has been a great experience, I've had the chance to work with coaches from the Brandon University Bobcats," said Beaudin. "The knowledge that they have been able to put in my brain has helped me a ton along the way."
As Beaudin's season came to an end with BVC at the national championships, he earned some season-ending hardware. Beaudin was named the 16U Player of the Year. It's the first time that Gabriel has won the prestigious award and it's one that he holds near and dear to his heart.
"That felt good, there were so many players to choose from," offered Beaudin. "It was a pretty big honour to end up being chosen for the award, it's a moment that I will never forget."
A star on the volleyball court, Gabriel does not have all of his eggs in one basket athletically. He's also become an all-star basketball player over the years after picking up the game when he was in grade one. Gabriel has spent countless hours on the hardcourt whether that be competing with Mackenzie Middle School or just a pickup game outside with his friends.
For the past two years, it has also included playing with the Clippers high school's junior varsity team.
"I've worked very hard over the years, getting to play with different guys the past two years has been fun," offered Beaudin.
Beaudin nearly lifted the Clippers to the top of the junior varsity mountain this past season. As one of the team's leaders, alongside his great teammates and coaches, the Clippers ship advanced to the provincial final where they came up short against the Windsor Park Royals.
The Clippers entered the provincial tournament sixth-ranked in the province before going on a great run that saw them end the season with silver medals.
"It kind of sucked coming up just short of winning gold," offered Beaudin. "With that said, it was such a great season. Looking back on it now, we achieved many great things, and should be proud of ourselves."
Beaudin will take his talents to the varsity team next year. Before that, Gabriel is set to put up his talents against the best U16 basketball players in the province. As the Manitoba Summer Games continue to near, Beaudin has cracked the roster for Team 16U West.
"I am super excited, it's a huge honour getting the chance to represent Dauphin," ended Beaudin. "I'm also excited to play with my Clipper teammates, it's our time for some redemption after coming up just short at high school provincials."
The Manitoba Summer Games will take place from August 11-17 in Dauphin and the surrounding area. As we continue to inch closer, stay tuned to 730CKDM as we will continue to highlight local athletes that will compete in the week-long event.

Allan McDonald will be looking to go two-for-two in Golf Manitoba events this summer.
He's part of the field that will compete in the Nott Autocorp Men's Amateur Championship at the Rossmere Golf and Country Club. The three-round event opens Monday morning and concludes Wednesday evening.
Five players from the Parkland will also tee it up at the event in a field that features 112 players. The field also includes three-time champion Braxton Kuntz. Kuntz, who plays collegiately at Nicholls State University, has won the event three straight years. He won the 2021 event in Neepawa, 2022 at the Elmhurst Golf & Country Club, and he won last year at the Oak Island Golf Club. He will be looking to make it four straight amateur championships next week.
Here is who will play from the Parkland:
Derek Benson - McCreary Golf & Country Club:
The McCreary native is coming off an impressive performance at the mid-amateur championships earlier this month. After opening with a five-over 77, Benson drained five birdies en route to a second-round 70. He then shot 77 in the third round to finish in a tie for 23rd. Derek's game is in great form and he will look to make some noise going up against the best amateur players in the province.
Eric Prokopowich - Dauphin Lake Golf Club:
Eric's run at Golf Manitoba's match play championships earlier this season was one that he will not forget. He was well prepared and dialled in. After a two-over 73 in his qualifying round, the Dauphin star went on quite the run. He advanced to the semi-finals in that event where he came up short against Thomas Scott.
Thomas Scott - Dauphin Lake Golf Club
Just like Eric, Thomas went on quite the run at the match-play event. Thomas shot a one-over in his qualifying round and then opened up the match-play portion of the event with a dominating 6&5 win as the seventh seed. He then rallied off wins against Doug Penner, Kaleb Lambert, and Prokopowich. Thomas then narrowly came up short against Marco Trstenjak.
Jackson Delaurier - Dauphin Lake Golf Club:
Only nine other golfers recorded rounds of either par or under par. Delaurier was the 10th as he played some very steady golf in shooting an even-par 72 in round two of Golf Manitoba's junior provincial championships last week. Delaurier finished in 17th place which has him feeling great heading to the Rossmere Golf & Country Club. It's a longer course that requires precision and accuracy, two traits that Delaurier certainly has.
Hayden Delaloye - Neepawa Golf & Country Club:
Just like Jackson, Hayden is coming off a strong performance at the junior boys' provincial championships last week. He was also Mr. Consistency as he fired back-to-back 75s in the first two rounds before wrapping up his event with a 77. Delaloye ended up finishing in a tie for ninth.
It's set to be an exciting week of golf at the Rossmere Golf & Country Club, so stay tuned for updates.

The Mavericks Rugby Club men's team is going strong. Heading into an important game against the Brandon Barbarians this weekend at KIN Field, the men's team features a great roster and numbers are as strong as they have been in years.
Now, the men's team is joined by a women's team. The Lady Mavericks are fielding a 10s team this year and are preparing for their second game of the campaign. Their first was last month when they put up a great performance in a 19-10 loss against the Assassins. They are the number-one ranked team in the Premier Division which shows how strong the Lady Mavericks are and how bright of a future the team has.
It was the team's first game in nearly two decades. Chloe Fletcher was thrilled to be back on the pitch playing the sport she loves.
"We did very well, we held our own, that's for sure," said Fletcher. "It was an incredible effort from our ladies. The Assassins are beating other teams by 20 to 50 points, so it was great that we were able to stay so close."
Forming a rugby team is no small feat. It takes time, dedication, and commitment. You also have to be ready to hit the road to play road games. It's something that the Mavericks have not done before this year for nearly two decades, but Fletcher is thrilled that the Lady Mavericks are back.
"It feels incredible that we were able to put this together," offered Fletcher.
June 15 was a special day for the Lady Mavericks and July 20 will be just as special and perhaps, even a little bit more. After competing in their first game in nearly 20 years, the Lady Mavericks will now play their first home game in nearly 20 years.
They welcome the Barbarians to town on Saturday. The men's team will first play at 1:00 p.m. which is followed by the Lady Mavericks taking centre stage at 3:00. There is no entry fee to watch Mavericks game and Chloe is hoping to fill the stands.
"It is so exciting, we are thrilled to have a home game for both our men's and women's team," ended Fletcher. "We love coming out and having people in Dauphin supporting us. It's so nice to have a great support group cheering us on."
So if you're looking to catch some local rugby action, KIN Field is the place to be on Saturday afternoon. Then you can head to the curling rink inside the Parkland Rec Complex to see Dauphin's newest Stanley Cup Champion Myles Fee.

First, it was Derrick Vendramin, then it was Seth Gares.
Now, it's Johnny Baptiste. Playing in men's night at the Dauphin Lake Golf Club on Wednesday, Baptiste struck a beautiful eight iron to ace the extremely tough par 3, second hole. The hole was playing 170 yards and is one of the toughest on the course.
Johnny's hole-in-one continues a string of perfect shots in Dauphin as Derrick Vendramin recorded a hole-in-one late last month while Seth Gares achieved the feat earlier this month.

Seth Gares is the newest member of the hole-in-one club.
He fired the perfect shot with a five-iron to ace the very tough 14th hole at the Dauphin Lake Golf Club. The 14th is a 195-yard hole and requires a precise shot even to just get on the green.
Gares drained the shot during a men's night match playing alongside Noah Wiens, Darren Ripmeester, and Jason Gibbs. It was Seth's first hole-in-one.
