Once gain in the blink of an eye the Parkland Source for Sports Novice Classic has come and gone.

Sixteen teams from around Manitoba, and even one from Saskatchewan competed for the ultimate prize.

In the end the Souris Elks battled through and won. 

The Elks met Dauphin Fire in the A Side semi-finals, and at one point trailed in that game 5-2. Souris made a comeback to take an 8-6 lead. But the dramatics would not stop there. 

Dauphin fire responded with two goals in the last two minutes to force overtime. In overtime Souris notched the game-winning goal.

In the A Side final the Elks met with another Dauphin opponent the Blades of Steel. Once again Souris trailed in that game 5-1, but battled back winning the Parkland Source for Sports Novice Classic with a 9-7 victory. 

In the B Side final another Dauphin team was in action. The Dauphin Rebels were crowned B Side champs with a win over Neepawa.

The Dauphin Kings earned three out of a possible four points against the Portage Terriers in a home-and-home series, with the Kings winning 4-2 on Wednesday, and Portage winning 3-2 in overtime on Friday.

The Terriers opened the scoring in the first, 2:30 later Brett Piper scored his first MJHL goal to even the game for the Kings. 

In the second period the teams traded goals again. James McIssac restored the Terriers lead, but it was taken away 32 seconds later when Austin Friesen fired a shot from the point scoring his first goal for the Kings in his second contest. 

James McIsaac capped a three point night with his second goal of the game 1:44 into overtime. 

The Kings are in action Tuesday when they host Wayway.

 

The rinks around here will be packed with plenty of young hockey players this weekend. 

The Parkland Source for Sports Novice Classic kicks off tonight with one game between Grand Plains and the Swan Valley Broncos at 7:30 at the Rotary Arena. 

The 16 team tournament features teams from Grand Plains, Shoal Lake, Portage, Boissevain, Souris, Neepawa, Ste. Rose, Russell, two teams from The Pas, two Swan Valley clubs, three Dauphin squads, and even a team from Yorkton. 

The tournament really gets busy on Saturday morning with action all day from 8:00am until 6:30pm between the Rotary Arena and Credit Union Place. Some neighbouring communities will also get in on the action with Ste. Rose and Gilbert Plains hosting games on Saturday. The action continues Sunday, again all day from 8:00am to 5:00pm.
