Four Parkland rinks competed at the Canola Junior Curling Men's and Women's Provincial Championships over the past week.

The Parkland Rangers kicked off 2017 on the right foot with a 5-4 overtime win.

Rangers Captain Bradyn Smelski opened the scoring for the Rangers in the first and added another goal in the second period.

The Rangers led the Southwest Cougars 4-1 after 40 minutes, but a three goal third period from the Cougars forced overtime.

Bradyn Smelski was the hero in overtime. His third goal of the night came on the powerplay, giving the Rangers the win.

Carter Cockburn and Mark Liwiski also had goals for the Rangers in the win. Nicholas Arp earned the win in net, stopping 26 of 30 shots.

The Rangers next game is Saturday at home against the Winnipeg Wild.

A Dauphin Kings prospect has been given player of the month honours again.

Ryder Richmond of the Yellowhead Chiefs has been named the Manitoba Midget Hockey League defenseman of the month for December.

Richmond recorded one goal and eight assists in seven games. He also had a one-game call up with the Dauphin Kings last month during the MJHL Showcase against the Portage Terriers.

The stage was set, entering the third period the Dauphin Kings trailed their opponents heading into the third period.

Having won their last two games in come-from-behind overtime victories, the Kings were as cool as could be, despite being heavily outshot 39-14 after 40 minutes.

Keaton Leininger potted his 11th goal of the year to bring the Kings within one, but it was one of only two shots the Kings put on net in the third period as their luck ran out, dropping the game 3-2 to the Winkler Flyers.

Brandon Holtby stopped 48 of 51 shots in the loss. He was not recognized as one of the game's three stars.

Grady Hobbs first put the Kings on the board in the first period to tie the game 1-1.

The Kings now look ahead to Saturday's game when they host the Swan Valley Stampeders. It is the last meeting between the two this season. Swan currently sits in the 8th and final playoff spot in the MJHL, six points ahead of the Kings.
