When the Dauphin Rangers FC hit the field this season, they will be defending their title. They won last year's Westman High School Soccer League by beating Oldcastle United in the final, 5-4.

The team is now ready to go once again and you can be a part of a team that has title aspirations once again.

"We're looking for new players so anyone that is interested in playing can come out to practices on Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m. at Vermillion Sportsplex," said James Blake. "Just come and see if you want to play this season."

You must be at least 18-years-old to play. There will be a cost associated with the season and that will be determined at a later time.

Dauphin FC will be joined by two teams from Brandon this year and one from Deloraine. The season schedule includes three home games and three away games.

Ste. Rose's Jaegar Lapointe is heading to Whitehorse, Yukon this weekend to represent the province. He's set to play for the Manitoba men at the 2019 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships. The Manitoba team features the top midget aged indigenous players in the province.

It's the first time that Lapointe will get to play in the tournament that begins on May 6.

"It feels pretty good, it's not something that everyone gets to do," added Lapointe. "We have a really good group of guys and I'm looking forward to getting things going with them."

"I'm just trying to keep my nerves down to a minimum, I mean it's just playing hockey and I love playing the game," he added. "When you're playing with guys that have played in this before, it makes it easier as well.”

Last year the team won a bronze medal at the tournament by beating Ontario South. They entered as one of the tournament favourites and they will once again enter as a favourite this year.

"Our coach has really high expectations for us and we have high expectations on ourselves as well," added Lapointe. "Our roster looks pretty good from top to bottom."

Jaegar will look to bring what was a successful season in the Parkland to Whitehorse. He had 43 points in 43 games for the Rangers. Although he isn't worried about how many points he racks up in Whitehorse, he does know scoring would help this team win gold.

"I play a good offensive game so I need to get the puck in deep and be strong and get the puck to the net," he added. "I also need to look for the open man, it should be a fun experience playing in this and I guess I'll see where my offensive game is at."

Winning gold isn't the only goal Jaegar is looking to accomplish at the event. He will also be looking to impress scouts as he looks to play junior hockey next season. He's already played a few games as a call-up and now he wants to make the transition full-time.

"I'm sure there are going to be a lot of scouts that will be watching the event," added Lapointe. "Hopefully, I can play well and I guess we'll see what happens."

The team plays its first game on May 7.

For some badminton players, it takes years to win a tournament and sometimes it never happens. For Gilbert Plains Brooke Hanke and Montana Jubenvill, it took one tournament.

Montana and Brooke teamed up to win the Grade 6 girls doubles title at the Divisional Championships over the weekend.

They went a perfect 6-0 and they capped off the tournament with a decisive two-set win, 21-8, 21-18 in the finals.

"It felt great to win because it was our first year playing and we didn't lose a game, it was a really fun weekend," said Hanke. "We worked really hard at practice to prepare and we got some tips from our coach."

When looking back at the tournament, winning is no doubt something they will never forget but it's not the only thing they will never forget.

"Winning was definitely a great feeling but playing with all of our friends and spending time with them was amazing as well," said Jubenvill.

The duos badminton season has now come to an end. They will continue practicing as they prepare to defend their title next season.

The Dauphin Clippers men’s and women’s rugby teams hit the pitch today at Vermillion Sportsplex.

The men lost a close 24-22 battle to Souris.

The women also came up short by a 42-39 final, also against Souris.

In other Clippers action, it was a perfect day for the women’s fastball team.

They beat Ste. Rose twice, 13-10 and 14-10.

Russell's Tyson Zimmer was one of over 90 skaters that took part in Hockey Manitoba's Program of Excellence earlier this month. Of that number, only 24 forwards in all of Manitoba were going to advance to the Top 40 Camp.

Right after the first camp Tyson headed back to British Columbia and he played the waiting game. Late last week Zimmer found out that he will continue as he was one of the 24 forwards that were named to the Top 40 roster.

"Yeah, it feels pretty good," said Zimmer. "With all of the talent in Manitoba and they thought I was a Top 40 guy in the province, it kind of makes me feel special."

When the Top 40 takes over Portage La Prairie from May 9-14, it won't be Zimmer's first. He also made the Top 40 last year.

"Making the Top 40 last year gave me a lot of confidence coming in this year because I was a year younger and I didn't think I was going to go as far," said Zimmer. "There is still a ton of talent this year but making it last year helped my confidence."

Last season Tyson played for the Parkland Rangers where he led the team with 69 points in the regular season. His on-ice success went right into this season where he joined the Okanagan Hockey Academy Bantam prep team. He produced 52 points in 26 regular season games and he tacked on two more playoff points in three games.

Playing for Okanagan gives Tyson a great chance to focus more on his development. The team is on the ice every day and they work out every day as well.

"I think I've improved a ton over the past year," added Zimmer. "We have skating coaches and a few other coaches. I really think playing with Okanagan improved my game a lot."

Ste. Rose's Olivia Sheldon is the first female to be certified as a Baseball Canada Level 3 umpire in the Parkland Minor Baseball Association (PMBA). Sheldon attended Baseball Manitoba's clinic back on April 28 in which she earned her certification.

"I really enjoy umpiring, I've been doing it for several years so I thought I might as well get my level 3 certification," said Sheldon.

Getting her Level 3 certification has been in the works for years for Olivia. Baseball Manitoba requires you to finish three years each of Level 1 and Level 2 before you can apply for Level 3. You also need to be 18-years-old. Sheldon checked off all the boxes.

Being a Level 3 umpire also opens several doors for the Ste. Rose native. She can now umpire provincial championships at all levels and she can also umpire Western Canadian Championships.

On top of being an umpire, Olivia will continue to mentor young umpires around the PMBA which includes her hometown of Ste. Rose. The next step for Olivia will be obtaining her Level 4 certification which will allow her to umpire nationally.

"Yeah, that's going to be really exciting when I get that chance for sure," said Sheldon.

On top of her umpiring duties, Olivia will have a busy summer playing the game she loves. She will suit up on the U18 Ste. Rose team as well as the Parkland AAA team. Olivia will also look to crack the U21 Manitoba women's team ahead of the nationals later in the summer.

"I'm really excited for the season to get going. I'm also coaching so it's going to be busy but really good," added Sheldon.

Roblin's Jakob Brook is set to play for his first ever Western Hockey League title in his rookie season.

Brook and the Raiders beat the Edmonton Oil Kings, 4-2 earlier today to win the best of seven in six games.

The win advances the team to the WHL final against the Vancouver Giants.

Because of the distance between the two teams, it will be a 2-3-2 format.

Brook and the Raiders have home ice beginning on Friday, May 3.

Gilbert Plains Mackenzie Zatylny, Dauphin's Hannah Gingera, Emma Wilcock, and Russell's Rainey Fingas had a fantastic weekend in Winnipeg.

Playing on the 17U Brandon Cats at the provincials, the four helped the team place second in all of Manitoba.

They went a perfect 5-0 in the round-robin. Two of the wins came against the top ranked and second ranked teams.

In the finals, they came up just short against Winman, 21-25, 22-25.

The team now heads to the National Championships from May 8-11 in Toronto.

After a slow start to their provincials, the Parkland Vipers 14u-2 are on a roll in Winnipeg.

The team rebounded with a big straight set win over JVC after dropping their first match. The set scores were 25-17, 25-13.

They next beat the Pirates from Winnipeg in a three-set battle, 25-14, 18-25, and 15-9. The Vipers clinched second in their pool with a dominating 25-20, 25-19 win over Selkirk.

Parkland kept the good times rolling in their first playoff game. They beat the Steinbach Pilots, 17-25, 25-23, and 15-11.

Next up is a Top 16 game tomorrow morning at 11:20.
