The Canadian Interuniversity Sport (or U Sports, if you prefer) women's rugby national championship begins today at the University of Victory. Eight teams from the four athletic conferences across Canada are in attendance, amoung them is a former Clipper rugby player: Dauphin's own Monique Coffey.
Coffey is playing her first season with the Acadia Axewomen. The Clippers standout continued to impress at the next level, earning a starting job in the Axewomen's lineup as a freshmen.
Coffey attributes the success to her speed.
"When I first got to training camp I feel like I impressed everybody with my speed," she said. And while speed had been one of Coffey's greatest strengths at the high school level, understandably, at her first training camp she was concerned it wouldn't translate.
"I was worried I'd get out here, and at this level I'd be slower than everyone." It seems like those concerns have been put to rest.
Acadia finished the regular season 4-2, and then went 1-1 in the playoffs, losing in the Atlantic University Sport Championship game to the St. Francis Xavier X-women. All three of Acadia's losses this year were to St. FX.
Acadia enters competition as the 6th seed of 8. The Axewomen are embracing the role of the underdog and hoping for a chance at redemption.
"Coming in after that loss other teams are probably not looking at us like we're that much competition," admitted Coffey. "That gives us more opportunity to show them just how well we can do and put out all that we can. A chance at redemption."
Coffey also talked about her presence at nationals helping to put the Dauphin Clippers rugby programs on the map.
"Not a lot of rugby players from Dauphin have gotten this opportunity, it shows that we're here and Dauphin's making good rugby players."
And make good rugby players that certainly have. Rod Carberry and Jason Alf have done a lot for the program in the last year alone. Don't be surprised if another Clipper, Kaila Stratuliak, should play at the university level.
Coffey is also looking at this opportunity as a measuring stick. There are only a handful of rugby teams in the Atlantic University Sport conference, an appearance at nationals gives Coffey and the other Axewomen a chance to see what talent is there across Canada.

The Manitoba Junior Hockey League has announced this season's first performers of the month.

The Parkland Rangers once again pulled off a 5-4 overtime win over one of the top teams in the Manitoba Midget Hockey League.
Mark and Andrew Liwiski scored all 5 goals in the winning effort over the second place Yellowhead Chiefs.
Andrew Liwiski got the Rangers on the board with 3.7 seconds left in the first period to head into the break tied 1-all.
Mark Liwiski scored gave the Rangers their first lead of the game with a go-ahead marker in the second. The Chiefs answered Liwiski's goal 10 seconds later, and got back into the lead with another goal before the second intermission.
In the third the Chiefs doubled their lead 4-2. An overzealous celebration from one of the Chiefs players lit a fire under the Rangers.
Mark Liwiski scored answered back 11 seconds later to bring the Rangers within one, then brother Andrew scored just over a minute later to tie the game as momentum began to shift.
Mark Liwiski scored the overtime winner, and his third of the game for the Rangers to earn them their second consecutive 5-4 OT win.
The Rangers will try to make it three in a row when they take on the Winnipeg clubs this weekend, the Wild and the Thrashers.

The World Cup of Hockey may have come and gone, but for some it's a memory that will last a lifetime.
That's the case for Dauphin's Myles Fee, a former Dauphin King who after the turn of the millennium went to play with Manhattanville College in the NCAA.
After his career on the ice Fee became a video coach with the NHL's Edmonton Oilers. His seven years with the Oilers eventually lead to becoming a video coach for Team Europe at the World Cup of Hockey.
Fee described the event as "hockey heaven."
After the World Cup of Hockey, Fee began work for his new team, the American Hockey League's Charlotte Checkers, Carolina's AHL affiliate.
He's still a video coach, but has began taking on other roles with the club and is transitioning into the role of an assistant coach.

The Dauphin Kings have named their three stars of the week and the 'Paper Boys' line has stolen all the spots.
Hard working Grady Hobbs took the third star, he has yet to find the back of the net this season, but the 16-year-old doesn't shy away from the gritty areas or physical play.
Hobbs came close to scoring his first goal on Friday against Winkler, firing a shot of the cross bar.
An honourable mention last week, Brendan Arnold earned the second star nod this time around.
Riese Gaber of Gilbert Plains claimed the first star this week, he had the lone goal in Saturday's loss to Selkirk.
The line has combined for 11 points in the Kings last 5 games.
The Kings are back home on Friday for their third game of the year against the Winkler Flyers.
