What an incredible weekend it was for the Parkland 13-U Vipers Volleyball Club.
Playing in the Yorkton Blitz tournament, the Vipers proved they are among the elite teams as they coasted their way to a championship and are back home in the Parkland with all smiles and gold medals to show for it.
In the final, the Vipers dominated QCVC from Regina, 25-21, 25-14. They also beat the Blitz Thunder and Blitz Inferno on their way to the championship weekend.

The Parkland U-18 Rangers are hoping to forget this weekend.
Wrapping up a set against the Winnipeg Bruins, the Rangers had just 11 shots as they once again showed no match for the Bruins in a 7-0 defeat. Parkland were outscored 16-2 in two games this weekend.
Winnipeg responded with 43 shots. Parkland remains in a playoff spot and are still only six points back of fifth place.

The Parkland U-18 Rangers opened the scoring but it wasn't pretty after that.
The Winnipeg Bruins scored four goals in the second period and five more in the third as they hammered Parkland, 9-2, on Saturday night at Credit Union Place. In the first of two meetings between the two teams this weekend, the Rangers had no answer when the Bruins hit their stride.
Liam Chartrand and Quinten Fisk scored for Parkland in the game while Piet Mierau made 30 saves. These same two teams will play on Sunday afternoon at 1:30. The Rangers are now 18-16-1 on the season while the Bruins are 25-6-1-1.

The Dauphin Kings used another dominating performance on Saturday as they won their 25th game of the year.
Led by another two-goal game from Cayden Glover, the Kings pounded the Winnipeg Blues, 7-1. It was Glover's 10th multi-goal game of the season and while he was on the ice for a late power play in the third, he couldn't find the back of the net.
None the less, it was another outstanding offensive performance from the 20-year-old.
Madden Murray (12), Joshua Schmidt (5), Gabriel Bugeaud (9), Ty Pratte (3), and Matthew Haun (3) scored for Dauphin in the victory while Cole Sheffield made 25 saves to record his 20th win of the season in net.
Dauphin has now scored 25 goals in their last three games. They'll head to Swan River to play the Stampeders on Tuesday night, you can hear that game here on 730CKDM with Darnell Duff at 6:50.

A few mistakes in the first period cost the Dauphin Clippers dearly on Saturday afternoon.
After their game on Friday was postponed, the Clippers were back on the ice at Credit Union Place and couldn't get anything going offensively as they lost 5-0 to the league leading Vincent Massey Vikings.
The win improves Vincent Massey's record to 23-0 on the season while Dauphin slips to 12-4-0-1 with the loss. The Clippers return to the ice on Wednesday when they head to Sandy Bay to play the Badgers before returning to Credit Union Place for a triple header, next Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Joey Kubas has been one of the top prospects for the Dauphin Kings for a few years.
Joey signed his Letter of Intent with the Kings two years ago after fall camp and officially committed to the program during the fall of 2023. Once completing his final year of high school at Bloomington Jefferson High last year, where he had nine goals and 21 points in 26 games, Kubas changed his goals from just competing at camp to making the roster.
Kubas achieved that goal as he was named to the team's opening-day roster and made his Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) debut on September 21, 2024. He finished with four penalty minutes as Dauphin completed an opening weekend sweep over the Virden Oil Capitals with a 4-2 win in front of more than 1100 fans at Credit Union Place.
Six days later, Kubas was back in the lineup as Dauphin made their way to Neepawa to play the Titans. Tied at one early in the second period, Kubas scored his first goal as a King just more than seven minutes into the frame. It was his first and the goal stood up as the game-winner as Dauphin held off the Titans, 4-1.
"That was a fun one and a big goal for the team. It's always more enjoyable when it's a big goal for the team," said Kubas. "It was a goal that I'll never forget, a pretty special moment for my family and me."
Joey scored his second goal as a King just a few weeks later as a part of a two-point performance against Waywayseecappo on November 13 and his third goal as a King came last weekend. In a 13-3 drubbing of the Winnipeg Freeze, Kubas had one goal and one assist.
It was Dauphin's biggest victory of the season.
"We were firing on all cylinders, it was a good way to get going here in the second half," continued Kubas.
34 games into the team's 58-game schedule and the Kings are sitting on top of the MGEU West Division. At 24-9-1, the Kings have a two-point lead over the Northern Manitoba Blizzard, with three games in hand. Dauphin heads south to play the Winkler Flyers on Friday night, a game you can hear on 730CKDM with Darnell Duff, opening with the Parkland Source for Sports pregame show at 7:20.
Dauphin has scored 18 goals in their last two games and is just seven points behind Winkler and Steinbach for first overall. They have one game in hand on the Flyers and two in hand on Steinbach.
"We have a special group this year, we're very tight in the locker room, everyone enjoys each other's company," offered Kubas. "We're a deep group. We roll all lines from top to bottom and have two very good goaltenders. We also have coaches who believe in us and know we are capable of winning every night."
Regarding the coaching staff, the team welcomed back Doug Hedley earlier this week. After serving an eight-game suspension, Hedley was on the ice for practice on Wednesday and will be behind the bench on Friday when Dauphin plays the Flyers. It will be a boost for a team that plays the defending champions.
"It's great to have him back and his presence," commented Kubas. "It's time to get rolling and build a winning streak."
While Joey is thriving and putting together an excellent rookie season, his best friend hasn't missed a second of the action and is also a part of the organization. Joey's dad, Andy is the team's assistant general manager and Northern USA Scout.
Andy has made many trips to Dauphin over the years and the bond that the dynamic duo share is near and dear to Joey's heart.
"He's my best friend, we do everything together. We play golf every day in the summer and we're always hanging out," said Kubas. "We're big hockey nerds so we love diving deep into stats and things like that."
Joey also said his game is improving on the course and he's starting to beat his dad. The first-year King is also very close with his younger brother, sister, and mom.
"We're a very close family, they mean everything to me, I'm very lucky to have them by my side," continued Kubas.

The Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) has unveiled its rosters for the highly anticipated MJHL/SJHL Showcase, set to take place later this month at Winnipeg's Seven Oaks Sportsplex. Among the league’s brightest stars, five standout players from the Dauphin Kings have earned their spots on the rosters, ready to represent their team and league.
Here’s a closer look at the Kings heading to the Showcase:
Gavin Nemis – Team 18U White
Skating on a line with Cayden Glover and Madden Murray, Nemis has transformed into a game-changer. With his electrifying speed and relentless work ethic, Nemis consistently dominates shifts and makes his presence felt. His poise and determination promise an exciting second half of the season as he continues to elevate his play.
2024-25 Stats: 8 goals, 21 assists – 29 points
Cayden Glover – Team 20U Black
Glover has been a scoring machine, leading the league with 28 goals. With 45 points, he’s solidified his spot among the MJHL’s top 10 scorers. Known for his accurate shot, Glover has recorded nine multi-goal games and remains a constant threat on the ice. Expect him to keep lighting it up as the season progresses.

Naaman Hofer – Team 20U Black
With a future locked in at NCAA Division I’s University of Alaska-Anchorage, Hofer has been dominant on the blue line. Leading all MJHL defenders with 41 points, Hofer’s smooth skating and ability to navigate pressure make him a key playmaker. A dynamic and electrifying player, Hofer is a name to watch in the Showcase.
2024-25 Stats: 5 goals, 36 assists – 41 points
Matthew Thomas – Team 20U Black
At just 18, Thomas is making an impact on both ends of the ice. Averaging nearly a point per game, his power-play precision and defensive improvements have made him a crucial player for the Kings. His razor-sharp shot keeps opponents on edge, and his development shows no signs of slowing down.
2024-25 Stats: 11 goals, 15 assists – 26 points
Cole Sheffield – Team 20U Black
The backbone of the Kings, Sheffield has been nothing short of stellar. Leading the league in minutes played (1,697) and tied for second with 19 wins, the 20-year-old goalie continues to dominate. After a spectacular playoff performance last season, Sheffield’s form remains elite as he ranks near the top of every statistical category.

Swan Valley Bright Spots
Despite a challenging season, Landen Gulutzan and Will Brown have been key contributors for Swan Valley. The 20-year-olds will represent the Stampeders on Team 20U Black, bringing their skill and leadership to the Showcase.

The countdown to the 2025 Canadian Football League season continues.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have announced their schedule for the upcoming season, starting with a preseason home game against Saskatchewan on May 24 at 3:00 p.m. before heading to Regina for a rematch the following week on May 30 at 8:30 to conclude their preseason.
The team's home opener and first game will be on Thursday, June 12 at 7:30 p.m.

Piet Mierau's goal was to make the Dauphin Kings this season.
After playing the past three years with the Pilot Mound Academy program and becoming one of the Kings' top prospects, Mierau was ready to come in and earn his spot.
While he didn't make it, Piet was presented with a great opportunity. Stay in Dauphin and play with the Parkland U-18 Rangers and while doing so, practice with the Kings during the week. It was an offer that was too good to pass up for Piet and now, he's thrilled to be a Parkland Ranger while practicing with the Kings upwards of four times per week.
"It's great being a Ranger. We have sponsorships from so many places in town and it seems like everyone who likes hockey knows who the Rangers are," said Mierau. "I know this is only my first year with the program but I'm enjoying it and I love the decision I made."
When practicing with the Kings, Mierau gets top-notch coaching from Dan Keeping and gets to work alongside one of the best goalies in the league Cole Sheffield while also working alongside Bryson Yaschyshyn.
"Being able to be on the ice with Dan Keeping every day alongside Cole and Bryson is an incredible opportunity for me," continued Mierau. "I get to practice against top junior players every day, I can take my game to the next level."
With the Rangers, Piet is guiding the team as they're in an epic playoff race. Sitting in seventh at 18-15-1, the Rangers are two points ahead of Interlake who are in eighth, yet the Rangers are just two points behind Eastman who are in fifth.
The push to make it to the final eight will be a thrilling ride as the Rangers look to make their return to the playoffs after missing last year.
"We have a great group of guys and my billeting situation is absolutely incredible," said Mierau. "Everyone is excited about this chase. Every practice and game, guys are coming prepared. We're treating every game as if it's do or die at this point, it's about being ready to compete every day."
Mierau has been a workhorse in the net for the Rangers this year. He's played 26 games and his 1500 minutes played is nearly 200 more than Dylan McFadyen of the Lightning. While fatigue could be a factor for some who play as often as Mierau, he wouldn't change it for anything.
"It's great, I love playing," said Mierau. "When I'm playing consistently, I feel like I can build my confidence. Whenever my number gets called, I'll be ready to go."
Mierau has come to play with 13 wins. He has a .901 save percentage and he's made 40 or more saves 10 times this season. He's coming off an incredible 49-save performance in the team's overtime win against Interlake and posted 50 saves in the team's win over Pembina Valley on December 14.
Mierau is a gamer and if the Rangers are to make the playoffs, he will be a major reason.
"I'm feeling great about my game. I believe I have been getting better every game," ended Mierau. "I love being a Ranger and I'm pushing myself to be the best goalie that I can be."
Mierau and the crew are back in action twice this weekend against the Winnipeg Bruins. On Saturday, they'll lock horns at 7:30 before hitting the ice again on Sunday at 1:30, both games are at Credit Union Place.

The Swan Valley Tigers varsity girls' basketball team is feeling great after a solid weekend.
They played in the Neepawa Tigers' Classic and came home with a bronze medal after beating the host Tigers in a thrilling third-place match, 54-49. The Tigers advanced to the A-side semi-finals after beating Ste. Rose, 48-43.
While they lost to a powerhouse Vincent Massey Brandon squad in their following match, the Tigers finished the event perfectly with a third-place finish.

Talon Hogg is all about the Interlake Lightning program and will soon be all about the Dauphin Kings.
The 17-year-old from Warren is in his fourth season with the program, dating back to the 2021-22 campaign when he played 28 games with the U-15 team and eight with the U-17 team.
For the past three years, Hogg has been with the U-18 team in the Manitoba U-18 AAA Hockey League and he has certainly made a name for himself. Hogg has played 119 regular season games with the U-18 team, scoring 16 times and posting 53 points along with 110 penalty minutes. He's now 32 games into his final season with the team as Interlake is locked into an intense playoff race.
"Things are going pretty good, our goal was to be higher in the standings at this point but we're battling it out," said Hogg. "We have a great group of guys that are committed to making a serious push, so it's fun to be a part of."
After a nail-biting 3-2 overtime loss to the Parkland Rangers on Sunday, the Lightning sit at 15-12-2-3 with 35 points, clinging to the eighth and final playoff spot. They’re holding a four-point lead over Pembina Valley but are also just four points behind Eastman, who currently holds the fifth spot.
With the stakes higher than ever, the Lightning have turned up the heat, securing points in all three of their last games and winning two of those contests. As team captain, Hogg is fully embracing the challenge ahead, knowing the next few months will be a battle for a playoff berth.
After a decade-long playoff drought, previous to last year, the Lightning are hungry to return to the postseason, and Hogg’s leadership will be key to their success. Last year, they pushed the powerhouse Winnipeg Wild to a thrilling fifth game in what was widely regarded as one of the most exciting playoff series in recent memory. The hunger for redemption is real, and the Lightning are poised to fight tooth and nail for another shot at glory.
"It was great making the playoffs last year for the first time in 10 years, that was a special achievement for our group," said Hogg. "It would be great to lock up a playoff spot again this year to show how this program has evolved over the years. It's really cool to be a part of and I'm looking forward to being a part of our playoff push."
This weekend, the Lightning head to Brandon for a showdown against the league-leading Wheat Kings. As the captain and a key leader both on and off the ice, Talon is proving his worth with an outstanding season. With six goals and 14 assists, he’s sixth in team scoring and on track for the best year of his AAA career. His two power-play goals are just the tip of the iceberg as Hogg eyes a career-high, sitting just one point shy of last season’s total of 21 points.
Known for his relentless defensive work, Hogg takes immense pride in shutting down opposing players, but it’s his all-around game that truly stands out. His rock-solid play on the back end is allowing him to transition the puck up the ice to create offensive chances with consistency. As the regular season enters its final stretch, Hogg is poised to finish strong and leave it all on the ice.
"Looking forward to next year and what's to come, I knew that I needed to have a good year," commented Hogg. "I want to work very hard and do anything in my power to help our group make the playoffs this year. That's what is driving me this year."
"It was really cool. I definitely was looking forward to it and the experience was great," continued Hogg. "I had fun and the guys welcomed me with open arms. It was a day that I will never forget."
"That definitely relieved some stress, I wasn't sure coming into the season where I would be next year," ended Hogg. "Knowing I will be in Dauphin is very exciting for me. Doug and I talked about my roles next year, the program, and the facility. It was a no-brainer for me to sign. I'm looking forward to the development and starting my junior career in Dauphin."
