Gilbert Plains Colby Robak has started his hockey season as he attempts to make the Calgary Flames.
"Things seem to be going pretty well so far," said Robak. "It's been a long hard few days, but that's kind of expected this time of year, so well see how it goes."
Robak spent last year with the American Hockey League's Utica Comets in which he recorded 28 points in 64 games, but that did not lead to a contract, as he sat and waited as a free agent during the summer months.
"It's kind of one of those things, the older you get the tougher it gets to find a job," said Robak. "I've gotten used to it the last couple of years, I respect it, and I kind of understand the process. I'm prepared for whatever. It's been a good first week and I'm thankful for the opportunity."
Robak has played in 47 games in the NHL, but the majority of his career has been spent in the AHL, and he's not sure what will happen this year.
"They're pretty deep on the back end, so it's one of those things you won't find out until the end," said Robak. "They're working us pretty hard, exhibition games start here pretty soon, so that's exciting."
Robak notes he came into camp lighter, which he feels the direction of the game is heading.
"It's a dream being on the ice with an NHL team," said Robak. We'll just see how it all unfolds.".
The Flames continue their preseason tomorrow against Vancouver.
