Whether it’s being out in the community, helping out at minor hockey practice or killing a penalty at a crucial time, Cordell Coleman is there and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to represent the Kings organization and he does a great job at it.
The 20-year-old from Lac La Biche, Alberta, is back with the Kings after he was acquired in a trade with Swan Valley back in the 2019-20 season. He played 35 games that year and was back last season; however, only played in six as the season was cancelled early on because of the pandemic.
Coleman has now played 75 games with the team and he couldn’t imagine being in a better place than Dauphin.
“I’ve been on a few good teams in the past but this is probably the best I have ever been on,” said Coleman. “I’m really excited for what the rest of the season can bring for us, we’re looking to go on a run.”
Parker Malchuk is the head of the leadership group as he’s the club’s captain. Kaden Bryant and Colby Jaquet are assistant captains and Coleman wraps up the team’s leadership group. It’s the first time that Cordell has been an assistant captain in his junior career and it’s a special feeling.
His brother Leyson played 112 games with the Swan Valley Stampeders, 50 of which came in the team’s run to the league final in the 2018-19 season when they ultimately came up short in seven games. The 2019-20 season was Leyson’s final campaign as a junior hockey player and he served as the Stampeders captain. So there’s no doubt that great leadership runs in the Coleman family, on and off the ice.
“My brother has always been a huge leader and role model to me,” said Cordell. “He was super proud and happy for me when I was named an assistant captain. I’ve always tried to put myself in spots where I can help people, whether that be teammates, friends or anything at all.”
Cordell will be back on the ice this Friday when the club welcomes the Virden Oil Capitals to Credit Union Place. Dauphin is coming off a 3-2 win last Saturday.
“That was a big win for us. We didn’t get the result we wanted in the first three games of the year but we stuck with it,” said Coleman.

Fishing, hunting, quadding. Really anything I can do outside, I’m all about that kind of stuff
Favourite hockey moment?
In my second year playing U18, we made it all the way to provincials and game seven, which was an incredible experience. One of the greatest years of my life with such a great group of guys
Is there anywhere you would like to travel to?
I would love to go down to Texas and go hunting, fishing and just some of the other things I enjoy outside
Favourite NHL team?
Edmonton Oilers, I’m a ride or die with them, there is no doubt about it
