43rd Death, 135 New COVID Cases Wednesday

Another death related to COVID-19 has been announced in Manitoba today, along with 135 new cases.

A man in his 80’s from Winnipeg is the province's 43^rd death due to the virus. This was a previously announced case in connection to an outbreak at Parkview Place care home in Winnipeg.

Manitoba has seen a total of 3,626 cases, with 1,774 considered active, and 1,809 recovered.

Today’s data shows:

17 cases in the Interlake-Eastern health region;
Four cases in the Northern health region;
12 cases in the Southern Health–Santé Sud health region; and
102 cases in the Winnipeg health region.

The following Parkland health districts have active cases: Dauphin (2), Asessippi (2), Little Saskatchewan (1), and Whitemud (1). Brandon has 10 active cases.

In the Interlake region, the Eriksdale/Ashern district has 4 active cases.

The province is increasing the fines for Manitobans who flout public health orders.

Premier Brian Pallister announced Wednesday those who fail to comply with health orders could face a $1,296 fine — more than double the previous fine of $486. For corporations, the fine will now rise to $5,000, up from the previous $2,500.

“Sadly there is a small minority of people that are not doing their part and they are ignoring the advice of our public health experts,” said Pallister.

The province says in addition to bigger fines, they’re also stepping up the enforcement of public health orders across the province.

As of October 12, the Manitoba government issued a total of 134 tickets to people failing to comply with Manitoba’s public health and emergency orders.

The new fine levels come into effect today.

This morning for Rotary Radio Week, Jean-Louis Guillas joined Al Gaines in the studio to talk about the Rotary Club’s book sale.

The book sale will be from November 5^th to 7^th and Guillas says the big change this time is the location.

“For many, many years we did it in the mall, but just with COVID, we are not able to have this spacing in the mall. So, we’re moving to the 8^th Avenue Hall, the Ukrainian Orthodox Auditorium and that’s going to be the location for drop-off of donations as well. We’ll have drop-off bins under the canopy at the front of the hall and you can bring it there and that will remind you that that’s going to be the location of the sale.”

The drop-offs will start next week on Monday, October 26^th.

On Thursday, November 5^th, and Friday, November 6^th, the book sale will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Then on Saturday, November 7^th, the book sale will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“We think that’s lots of opportunity for people to come.”

Guillas adds that they’ll have to limit the number of people in the sale at a time.

“What we’ve got in stock is well-sorted and we’re going to try and find ways that people can shop quickly, efficiently, and find the good things that they want to find.”

The book sale is one of the longest-running fundraisers for the Rotary Club and Guillas estimates it’s been running for over 25 years.

Tim Hortons is putting an end to the option of having your hot drink double-cupped.

The company says the end of double-cupping could eliminate about 200 million cups from landfills per year.

Tim Hortons will be providing cup sleeves for hot beverage orders in lieu of an extra cup.

The City of Dauphin is advising of a road closure on Main Street on Wednesday, October 21st.

Beginning at 6:00 a.m., a section of Main Street between 10^th Avenue SW/SE and 11^th Avenue SW/SE will be closed while crews repair a water main leak.

The road is expected to open later in the afternoon.

RCMP have made an arrest after two financial institutions were robbed in Dauphin Tuesday morning.

On October 20^th at around 10:00 a.m. officers were responding to a bank robbery on Main Street North in Dauphin, when they were made aware of a second robbery at a bank on the same street.

RCMP say a male suspect had entered both of the businesses and demanded cash before fleeing in a grey truck.

At about 10:30 a.m., RCMP located the suspect vehicle in a back alley between Main Street N and 1^st Street NW.

The suspect was found inside the vehicle along with a large sum of money.

The 25-year-old man from Duck Bay has been arrested and is facing robbery charges.

RCMP continue to investigate.

Public Health officials have identified 110 new cases of COVID-19 today.

A previously identified case has been removed, making today’s net increase 109. There is a total of 3,491 cases province-wide.

Today’s data shows:

Two cases in the Interlake-Eastern health region;
11 cases in the Northern health region;
Two cases in the Prairie Mountain Health region;
Seven cases in the Southern Health–Santé Sud health region; and
88 cases in the Winnipeg health region.

The following Parkland health districts have active cases: Dauphin (2), Asessippi (3), Little Saskatchewan (1), and Whitemud (1). Brandon has 10 active cases.

In the Interlake region, the Eriksdale/Ashern health district has 4 active cases.

Manitoba now has 1,746 active cases and 1,703 recovered. There are 32 people in hospital with 6 in intensive care. The number of deaths remains at 42.

Rotary Radio Week continued with Clayton Swanton joining Al in the studio this morning.

This morning’s topic was how Rotary helped with the Northgate Trails and Swanton says the Rotary Club stepped up big time.

“It all started when we were awarded the Manitoba Summer Games for 2020 and needed to create a mountain bike facility. Rotary stepped up and donated 50 thousand dollars right at the outset to the Manitoba Games Committee and that allowed us to get a plan for what Northgate would be. Then, once we had the plan, Rotary again came to the table with a bunch of other partners and Rotary’s contribution in addition to the 50 thousand to the games, was 150 thousand dollars towards Northgate.”

Swanton says Northgate features 26 kilometres of trail.

He adds that those trails definitely saw an increase in usage because of COVID.

“Hearing people’s anecdotally stories that they’re out here because they haven’t been able to go to Fernie to ride, or to Revelstoke to ride this summer and Northgate saved their summer cause they are used to going out and riding in other areas and they were able to come travel to Dauphin to ride, and then locals too, locals had this new area to go and explore and I think they took full advantage of that.”

The Northgate Trails are located just north of Riding Mountain National Park, on the road to Dauphin’s water treatment plant.

Prairie Mountain Health is holding its virtual AGM on Wednesday, October 21^st.

Residents are encouraged to participate and ask questions in the zoom meeting.

The meeting will take place from 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.

A new appointment-based COVID-19 testing system, launching first in Winnipeg, may soon be coming to other communities in Manitoba.

The appointment-based system will give Manitobans an option to call or go online to make appointments to get a COVID-19 test.

The system is being rolled out in Winnipeg first to address the high demand for testing in the city.

Health Minister Cameron Friesen also noted that starting later this week, Manitobans will be able to access positive COVID-19 test results in Shared Health’s online self-serve portal, which has previously only provided negative COVID-19 test results.

No referral or appointment is needed at Prairie Mountain Health testing sites.

The walk-in testing site in Dauphin is located at 301 Main Street North, open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
