One of three people charged in relation to a trio of armed robberies in Dauphin this past March has admitted her guilt in court.

24-year-old Mallory Catcheway of Brandon pled guilty in Dauphin court this week to charges of forcible entry and assault. 

She was sentenced to time already served in custody and 18 months of probation.

Dauphin's Culture Days continue with a duo of activities this Saturday.

Jean-Louis Guillas, Culture Days coordinator, is excited for the Art and Pottery show that will be at the Waston tomorrow from 10-4.

"Dauphin's becoming really a hotbed for crafters and makers of all kinds including some really talented and fantastic potters. they do everything from everyday pieces, cups mugs and plates, and even creative pieces"

Guillas also mentions that both the Dauphin Art Group and the Dauphin Pottery and Ceramics Club are open to new members if you are looking to learn a new skill,

This showcase of talented sculptors and artists will be followed later in the night with a musical duo show.

Standin' Pat will be performing a wide variety of hit covers and songs, Rockin' the Watson all Saturday night.

Russel's 51st annual Beef and Barley Festival has been partying all week long, but the weekend is about to get wild.

Beef and Barley Chair Tyler Kilkenny says it's been a great week so far, as festivities started on Tuesday.

He's looking forward to the weekend events, which include cribbage and dodgeball tournaments, socials, and the Charity Buckin' Rodeo.

The rodeo features costumed riders battling a mechanical bull, with their sponsors going towards charity.

"There's so many generations that come to the charity and the social and all the events. it's very community-minded, where you run into people you don't get to see all the time. The actual Bucking Rodeo has become just amazing. It's so much fun to watch the costumes and the fun that everyone has. You get people from 18 years old to 80 years old out to enjoy it." 

Sunday also features the Russel Lions car Rally.

So whatever you're into, this weekend at Russel Beef and Barley Fest has something you'll love.

The Dauphin RCMP wants to thank the public after tips led to an arrest in a vehicle theft case.

On October 10th at approximately 6:40 pm, Dauphin RCMP received information that a Ford F150 pickup truck had been stolen from Roblin and was believed to be heading towards Dauphin.

Later that evening, Dauphin RCMP began receiving numerous calls about this same stolen vehicle traveling at high rates of speed on residential streets within the city.

Patrols located the truck in Dauphin, but the culprits fled at dangerously high speeds.

Later, Reports came in from Grandview of a matching vehicle speeding through the area and eventually hitting the ditch.

Two male youths, aged 17 and 15, and a 20-year-old female, all from Roblin, were taken into custody.

The two youths were later released from custody to appear in court at a later date.

Melonie Allarie, 20, was remanded into custody on numerous charges including Theft, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime, Resist Arrest, and Failure to Comply with Release Order Conditions.

Cpl. Kalvin Kristjanson of the Dauphin RCMP was proud to see this response, saying “It is this exact type of community assistance that allows the RCMP to provide safer roads and communities.”.

Health Canada has announced a recall of some infant swings after five infant deaths were reported due to suffocation.

Several models of the Fisher-Price Snuga Swings are the affected swings.

Health Canada has said the swing should never be used for sleep and bedding materials should never be added to it.

Affected Swings:

If you have one of these swings, you should immediately stop using the recalled Fisher-Price Snuga Swing and remove the headrest (by cutting the tether) and the body support insert from the seat pad before continuing to use the product. You can contact Mattel to receive a partial refund for the headrest and body support insert.

Trade and export are a strong force behind Mantioba's economy, and the Provincial government is looking to grow that force.

The Manitoba government announced a $500,000 boost in export support programming for small and medium-sized Manitoba companies looking to explore, initiate, or expand their export activities into new markets.

Economic Development, Investment, Trade and Natural Resources Minister Jamie Moses announced this today, helping local businesses in two parts:

First, The Export Development Program reimburses Manitoba companies participating in a tradeshow or mission outside the province.

Secondly, The Incoming Buyer Program provides reimbursement to local companies that invite qualified international buyers to the province to purchase Manitoba products.

The program has seen strong uptake from Manitoba companies, highlighting the importance of having dedicated provincial export support programming.

 As of March, programming has supported 45 companies to attend 74 national and international events, trade shows, missions and conventions to form valuable partnerships

This weekend sees the return of rodeo once again to Ste. Rose Hoof and Holler Days.

for the second time in a decade, the Heartland Rodeo will be a huge highlight of this annual event, but there is still so much more.

Hoof and Holler Society President Ashley Vandepoele has a lot lined up for the weekend. 

 "We're having some of our regular things come back. Friday night, we're looking at having a family fun carnival. Free admission, we've got a caricature artist coming out, balloon animals, face painting, and lots of great prizes from our sponsors to win."

Day 1 of festivities. Come help us kick things off by raising some funds for our local hospital!

Construction is currently in progress at Riding Mountain National Park (RMNP) to repair and upgrade the Lakeshore Trail and the Pier at the Main Beach.

This work is a response to the extensive damage caused by severe weather in the spring and summer of 2022.

The Pier will be temporarily closed until spring, while the Lakeshore Trail will be closed in 400-meter sections, although some portions may remain open at times.

Additionally, two iconic visitor facilities are set for improvements aimed at enhancing safety, reliability, and accessibility. Parks Canada has expressed excitement about celebrating the completion of these projects next summer.

Improvements to the Pier include:

• Strengthened structure protection with enhanced riprap (rocks and boulders).
• Repairs to the walkway.
• Widening of the vegetated grassy area.

Improvements to the Lakeshore Trail include:

• Strengthened structure protection with enhanced riprap (rocks and boulders).
• New access ramps will allow users to access both ends of the trail without having to navigate stairs.
• Ten new stronger docks positioned to withstand waves and winds.
• Enhanced rest areas along the trail so visitors can relax and take a break.
• A harder, more even trail surface that drains better and is accessible to people of all abilities.

Parks Canada has expressed excitement about celebrating the completion of these projects next summer.

The Thanksgiving Long Weekend is right around the corner.

For many, this means gathering with friends and family for a nice meal and games around the table. As the weekend approaches, the Manitoba RCMP wants to make sure that every single Manitoban stays safe this weekend.

The RCMP has seen a sharp increase in impaired driving throughout the summer months whether that be alcohol or cannabis. When it comes to cannabis, Sargeant Mark Hume says the numbers have been alarming.

"We're seeing a lot of people claiming that they smoked or ingested cannabis 12 to 48 hours prior but when they're checked by officers, they're still over the legal limit," said Hume. "Many people are saying they use it medically or to sleep but it's still a drug that impairs you. People have to be careful about how much they're using and how quickly they're driving after the fact."

If you are planning on heading to a friend or family member's house this weekend, Hume encourages you to have fun but to be aware at all times. 

"The general rule of thumb is you have to hesitate and think am I sober enough to drive, the answer should be no," commented Hume. "If you're at all hesitant, you should not be driving anymore. Whether it's alcohol, cannabis, or any other illegal drugs, you should plan for an alternate drive home."

If you do happen to get pulled over during your travels this weekend, you should expect to be checked. Since legislative changes in 2018, Mandatory Alcohol Screening is now in effect.

"Gone are the days that officers had to have suspicion or probable cause to give a person a roadside breath test," offered Hume. "Expect to be tested if you are pulled over."

The law that came into effect in 2018 clearly states that officers are allowed to demand a breath test of any driver even in the absence of suspicion or cause. This has been a positive as officers have been able to get many impaired drivers off the road. 

"This law has been huge for us, it's contributed to the rise in impaired driving apprehensions," ended Hume. "We're noticing a rise in morning or early afternoon cases where people went too hard the night before and thought they slept it off but they didn't."

A Bill was introduced by Justice Minister Matt Wiebe that looks to regulate the purchase of long-bladed weapons.

this comes in the of instances of minors acquiring and attacking others with machetes in Winnipeg.

Bill 39, the Long-bladed Weapon Control Act, would seek to restrict the purchase of knives, machetes, and swords longer than 30 cm in several ways.

Bill 39 would prohibit the sale of long-bladed weapons to minors, and require purchasers to provide photo ID at the time of purchase.

Retailers would also be required to retain records, including purchaser information and transaction details, for a minimum of two years.

The Minister added the province plans to consult retail businesses, law enforcement, and Indigenous leadership to develop the regulations in the coming months.
