Eggs are an important part of any balanced breakfast, and today is a day to commemorate the people who farm them!
World Egg Day highlights not only this staple of almost every culture's cuisine, but also the hard-working individuals that raise hens, and keep the global supply of eggs moving.
Harold Froese is the Vice-chair of Manitoba Egg Farmers, and he's spending his weekend educating people on his farming passion.
"Together with some of my colleagues, I'm spending most of my day tomorrow at the University of Manitoba for World Egg Day interacting with students. We do events like this to promote eggs. we're setting up a display in the university center, and then we'll hand out some freebees and interact with students at the walk-by."
Manitoba Egg Farmers are big on educating people about their work, and how important egg farming is for food security moving forward.
As part of this, Manitoba Egg Farmers has supported Agriculture in the classroom with a 3-year funding commitment.
Froese loves working with this group and has done several facility tours for schools to show how things work.
"We try to be pretty active throughout the year. One of the things we're really excited about in terms of tours is the Bruce Campbell Food and Discovery Center at Glenlea just south of Winnipeg we just had an open house for a brand new, state-of-the-art facility."
Froese notes that one of his favorite things about eggs is the variety of ways that can be prepared, but as everyone does, he's got a favorite recipe.
"Probably my favorite is eggs benedict with a pot of coffee on the side. I think that's just excellent"

November 14th will mark the next court appearance for a Sandy Bay First Nation woman charged in connection with a death in that community.
26-year-old Fantasia Prince was charged with second-degree murder after Manitoba First Nations Police Service was called to a home on the reserve on June 29th after a report of an injured female.
When they arrived, police found the body of a 24-year-old woman.
The name of the deceased has never been released
Swan River armed robbery
The case of a Valentine's Day armed robbery in Swan River will return to court later this month.
RCMP in the community say a 15-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy claimed that a man wielding a hammer demanded money and items outside of a Swan River business, before fleeing the scene.
20-year-old Jefferson Cook and 39-year-old Loni Genaille were arrested in relation to the case.
They will be back in court next Wednesday, and remain in custody until then.

The annual Grandview Fall Harvest show takes place Saturday at the Grandview Kinsmen Community Centre, a great chance to get a start on early Christmas gift shopping
Michelle Wohlgemuth, who helps coordinate this event, notes that there is a lot to see.
"I have never gone and not been able to come up with several things to take home. Just to get out, it is beautiful to just walk around inside of there. It is a feast for the eyes."
Michelle also lays out some of the items you'll be able to find.
"There is woodworking, baking, jewelry. There is a whole pile of stuff. It looks pretty good this year with some people that we have never had before are there so it should be a really good day."
Wohlgemuth is excited to see what this year has to offer.
"There is always so many things. I would say you come and spend the day because you come and walk around and eat or have a coffee with somebody, and then decide to go back and get something for a friend - there is a place to sit down and do that. And they always have nice food in the kitchen that does the food for us. The Seniors Centre does that for us so there is always good food."
So be sure to get to Grandview this weekend for this excellent annual event.

A verdict in a Dauphin manslaughter case will be handed down on November 27th.
The trial for 32-year-old Cheyenne Beaulieu wrapped up in Dauphin Provincial Court on Wednesday.
He was charged with manslaughter after Dauphin RCMP received a report in July of 2021 of a wounded 33-year-old man, who had knocked on the door of a home seeking help.
The victim was taken to hospital but later died of his injuries.

Cold and Flu season is right around the corner, and Prairie Mountain Health will be providing vaccine clinics to get ready for it.
Beginning Monday, October 23rd, free public clinics will be available to provide both the seasonal flu and updated COVID-19 vaccines.
PMH recommends that Anyone over 6 months of age receive the updated COVID-19 and seasonal flu vaccine. The respiratory virus season last year affected many younger children.
Public health strongly recommends the seasonal flu vaccine for children aged six months to under five years old.
Vaccination against both COVID-19 and seasonal flu is particularly important for people at higher risk of severe outcomes including:
- adults 65 years of age or older;
- residents of long-term care homes or other congregate living settings;
- individuals with underlying medical conditions that place them at higher risk;
- individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding;
- individuals in or from First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities;
- members of racialized and other equity-deserving communities;
- and people who provide essential community services.
While appointments are recommended, walk-ins will also be accepted.

Residents in the RM of Lakeshore will head to the polls next week to elect two new councillors.
Election day is October 18th, with voting set to take place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Ochre Rive Community Hall.
For those who can not make it out next Wednesday, advanced voting will take place Friday night from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Ochre River Community Hall.
Three candidates - Les Sametz, Pat Nichols, and Grant Moffat - are looking to fill the two vacancies on Lakeshore council.

A 37-year-old Dauphin man will be back in court later this month in relation to a traffic stop in the city earlier this year.
Back on June 13th, RCMP pulled over a vehicle that they say was speeding while going northbound on Main Street.
They found two men inside the vehicle, along with a strong smell of alcohol and a large bag of unmarked cigarettes.
After the driver failed a breathalyzer test, Mounties also discovered several other items in the vehicle, including a homemade gun with a bayonet attached, along with used and unused ammunition, several cell phones, and a quantity of cash.
Christopher Bilay, who was the alleged driver of the vehicle, had his case put over until October 24th.
Swan River stolen trucks
October 24th will also be the next court date for a Birch River woman accused of stealing two trucks in Swan River.
Mounties say they received a report on July 17th of a stolen truck on Main Street in Swan River.
The driver fled after being spotted by police, and the truck was later found damaged and abandoned.
Two hours later, the suspect was seen in another stolen truck, and again fled from police, before being finally arrested later that day.
36-year-old Jamie Audy remains in custody until her next court appearance.
Drug bust in RM of Dauphin
The case of a Winnipeg man arrested after a traffic stop in the RM of Dauphin was back in a Winnipeg courtroom this week.
Back in March of 2021, RCMP pulled over a vehicle about 10 km west of Ochre River on Highway 5.
The driver was arrested after failing to provide a breath sample, and a search of the vehicle led to the seizure of a large variety of cannabis products, as well as about 195 grams of cocaine, cash, and an open bottle of liquor.
32-year-old Jory Rowe was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and is due back in court next Tuesday.

Brandon University has officially opened its new Breast Cancer Cell and Molecular Research Laboratory, with hopes of detecting breast cancer earlier in younger women using a blood test.
Currently, there is no FDA-approved diagnostic blood test for early breast cancer detection. But Dr. Mousumi Majumder, Brandon University Biology professor and Canada Research Chair in Genotoxicology, wants to change that.
In a news release, Dr. Majumder said their goal is to develop tests that can catch breast cancer earlier and using less invasive methods than current diagnostical tests.
The Breast Cancer Cell and Molecular Research Lab will facilitate that work with 1,000 square feet of research space, allowing up to 20 researchers and students to produce high-quality data and publish peer-reviewed scientific articles.

A local organization continues to be a positive force in Dauphin.
The Dauphin Neighborhood Renewal Corporation made sure that everyone could have a hot, delicious meal to be thankful for, feeding 130 individuals who may have missed out on the season feast otherwise.
Temptations Catering regularly pairs up with the DNRC to provide hot meals 4 days a week, and the turnout on Tuesday was a big success.
Thank you to the volunteers and staff that made last night's Thanksgiving Supper a HUGE SUCCESS with 130 meals served to community members. Hoping we put some smiles on faces after a great meal!!

As any Thanksgiving dinner should, the meal consisted of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, hot vegetables, garden salad, and dessert.
In a press release, the DNRC laid out the importance of their continued project of free meals.
"With 18% of Canadians struggling to keep food on the table, Thanksgiving can be an especially challenging time to those that are struggling with food security. The DNRC wanted to do its part to ensure that no child, no family, no community member has to spend this Thanksgiving season hungry."
The DNRC has been running meal programs for those in need in the community 5 days a week since December 2022, with close to 10,000 meals served in the calendar year of 2023 alone.
If you're looking to make a difference in your community, you can volunteer your time, or donate to the cause.
Donations for DNRC meal programming can be accepted by the Dauphin First United Church (tenant of the DNRC Community Centre) and charitable receipts will be issued.
When writing the cheque, make the cheque payable to Dauphin First United Church with the words “DNRC Meal Programs” in the memo portion of the cheque.

RCMP in Dauphin is hoping residents in the area of 1st Street SW and 4th Avenue SW can help them with info on an alleged shooting from Tuesday night.
They say around 10 p.m., a 43-year-old man was walking in that area when he was approached by three males riding BMX bikes.
They add the suspects spoke to the victim, who was then subsequently shot.
The victim made his way to the Dauphin Regional Health Centre, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Mounties are asking residents in the area of 1st Street SW and 4th Avenue SW to review their home security footage to see if the victim or suspects were captured on video.

Another edition of the Dauphin Kings Tractor Lotto is set to launch this weekend.
Online sales will launch at 9 a.m. Saturday morning and tickets will also be available during the Kings' game Saturday night against Neepawa.
Executive member Rae Csversko says this is the biggest yearly fundraiser for the hockey club.
"Very bluntly, without this fundraiser, it would be very difficult to operate the Dauphin Kings. The budgets are getting bigger and bigger every year. The tractor lotto is roughly 15 to 20 per cent of our overall operating budget."
The grand prize is $100,000, which can be taken as a cash payout or put towards the purchase of a tractor at Reit-Syd equipment.
But according to Csversko, there are other great prizes up for grabs as well.
"Everybody that I know of that owns a house with a piece of grass to cut would love riding a lawn tractor. And we are giving away three of them. So for $20, you have a chance to win a lawn tractor and also be a part of the 50/50 draw, if you do not really have disposable cash to spend on the draw for the bigger prizes, which are $100 or three tickets for $250. All in all, we try to think of everybody in the market."

The Kings have also announced that any tractor lotto tickets purchased during their home games between now and the draw date will be entered into a draw that night to receive an additional tractor lotto ticket for free.
Csversko says they are extremely grateful for the support they get from not just Dauphin, but also from surrounding communities.
The draws will be made on December 10th, and Csversko encourages you to get your tickets early, as the lottery does have a history of selling out in the past.
