Federal scientists are looking for ways to make HIV testing more accessible as one in five Canadians is unaware that they are infected.

According to Paul Sandstrom of the National HIV Laboratory in Winnipeg, certain populations don't wish to come forward for testing.

Some people feel that different behaviors associated with transmission of the disease are highly stigmatized.

Sandstrom says that engaging communities in a culturally sensitive way would not only provide opportunities for testing, but uptake as infections may not necessarily be associated with certain behaviors.
