Stats Canada released information that shows the Indigenous population and their languages are growing rapidly.
The Indigenous population in the country has risen 42.5 percent in the past 10 years. According to Stats Can the population has risen from over 1 million 100 thousand to over 1 million 600 thousand. The data also shows that the population is younger. Within the next 2 decades, stats Can is predicting the Indigenous population could hit 2.2 million.
More people are learning Indigenous languages. Stats Can registered 70 languages spoken all over the country with over 260 thousand people being able to speak one. That is an increase of 3.1 percent since 2006. The languages what were most used were Cree and Ojibway with over 175 thousand people who could speak it. There was a decrease, however, in the number of people who are able to have a conversation in an indigenous language. It dropped from 21.4 percent to 15.6 in the last 10 years.
