Farmers in the Parkland will soon be able to have their peas processed in the new Roquette pea-protein manufacturing site being built in Portage.

The official ground breaking ceremony for the massive facility was held last week with construction to begin in 2019. Vern May Executive Director for Portage Regional Development talks about the project.

“Some of the numbers that are coming out of this project are pretty staggering. So the first thing we are looking at here is that this is the largest pea processing facility of its kind in the world. It’s actually slated to eclipse their main factory in France. The first plant in the Roquette operation which has facilities in more than 100 countries in Canada and this is faze one of five which in the end will be more than 170 acres.”

The project is expected to cost more than 400 million dollars to build.
