Volunteers got a little more help this morning when Rick Mercer arrived in Inglis to help paint the UGG grain elevator.
During his time in Manitoba, he pressure washed a small section of the building, and eventually went up in a lift to work on the blue sign. Rick told CKDM’s Alec Woolston how he found out about the elevators in Inglis.
“You know one of the volunteers emailed the show and told us about it. And the minute I heard about it I absolutely wanted to do it because I love the look of the grain elevators, they are such an iconic image. But you know, you can’t do a segment for television just looking at something beautiful. So when we heard that there was something happening around a grain elevator, especially important ones like this, national historic site, the fact that it was volunteers, the fact that it was mostly seniors, the act that people from all over the place, it just sounds like a perfect piece. But someone told us about it, and that’s really important because we try and keep our eyes and ears all over the country, that’s what we cover, and you know, when you are in a place like this, unless someone from this town emails us and tells us about it, how we would know. "
As part of the event going on this week, the volunteers are holding a karaoke event called “Elvis and elevators.” Tickets are 20 dollars and must be bought in advance. This fundraising event is raising money to preserve the 5 Inglis elevators. For more info, contact Stuart at 1-281-450-1884.
