Freshwater fishermen in Manitoba appear to be ready to enter the open market.

This past summer, the federal government announced that they would be withdrawing from the Freshwater Fish Marketing Act, meaning fishers could market their own catches.

The Manitoba Metis Federation met with local fishers Tuesday night in Winnipeg to discuss the upcoming changes.

According to Minister of Fisheries with MMF John Parenteau, fishermen are ready for the open market.

"I think the fishermen are very happy with the decision the Government made in regards to the open market."

Prior to entering the open market, fishers had been selling through Freshwater Fish for 45 years.
